We’re a Coca Cola and Dr Pepper household here, but on occasion when a Pepsi product is consumed, the line “all I wanted was a Pepsi, and she wouldn’t give it to me” must be spoken.

Perfectly illustrates the 'noise', that those of us who struggle with depression and such, hear from very often well-meaning people. I'm almost 63 now but was still head-banging along with the song. Great upload.

Instantly recognized it used in a movie - I remember the Iron Man scene of Tony Stark hard at work in his basement laboratory, working hard on technical devices, while this song is playing loud.

They're a SoCal punk institution, still going strong and doing shows. My friend's band just recently opened for them. I love all the quality musicians that have been in their lineup at one time or another. Dave Lombardo (Drummer for Slayer), Brooks Wackerman (Drummer for Avenged Sevenfold), Robert Trujillo (Bassist for Metallica), Thundercat.
I think you'd like Infectious Grooves, their funk metal side project. Love their music and Trujillo's bass playing especially

This was where I had first heard of Robert Trujillo. Funny enough, when I heard he was joining Metallica, I remember thinking it will go one of two ways, they just got way better, or Lars is gonna try to mess with him and get double-tapped. 🤣

Their song "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow" is a little more "mainstream" in that Mike Muir is singing the lyrics.

This was a staple way back when. Back in the day when I had no idea what a mosh pit was, but had no problems whatsoever with "slam dancing", this was the song that set you off. Man that takes me back.

I first heard this song back in 1984 and immediately loved it. Suicidal Tendencies were one of the first bands to mix Hardcore punk with Metal and led the way for many later bands.

Yeah, hadn't heard that before but loved it. Very 'real'. Typical of the Grammys to chose a tired Ozzy Osbourne track over this (yet very atypical for it to be nominated but then again, it was the remake. A smart awards show would have picked up on the original in 1983) Does remind me a little of Husker Du's 'Zen Arcade' album which I don't think you've got round to yet.

I love these guys, Justin. You should do the whole album, it's very punk with some good humor elements and the band is good. They transformed into a more heavy rock band but singer Mike Muir maintained his punk attitude with his songwriting. "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow" is an epic track from their 3rd album and remains an all time favorite, check that one out for sure. Thanks JP!

YES!!!!!!!!!! When my best friend and I first heard this song we were 15 and we laughed our asses off - and instant classic that we still quote. These were similar to our parents who would over-worry about all the wrong things, because they probably saw something on a news program that said "you should be worried if your kids aren't _____ (fill in the blank here)." This is the early 1980s when many parents (not all ) were being told they should seek their own happiness even if they had kids. That could mean getting divorced to look for a better mate or pursuing their own wants and needs while their children were secondary and many times left to their own devices. You see parents like these depicted in movies such as Repo Man, Heathers, Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains, Valley Girl, etc. In this song it strikes me that parents just want the problem to go away rather than being really worried about their son. Parents are thinking, Could he just act normal because I don't want to have to 1) be socially embarrassed 2) have to deal with the problem so "we decided it would be in your best interest to put you somewhere where you can get the help that you need." It won't be with mom and dad - they'll drop him off at an institution just in time to make their 6pm tennis game at the club.
I still find this song hilarious Thank you Justin!!! It's been a great month!

Mike Muir (vocals) and Dean Pleasants (guitar) from Suicidal Tendencies formed a side-project funk-metal band called Infectious Grooves which are well worth a listen (I personally prefer them). Check out Savor Da Flavor or Don't Stop, Spread The Jam.

Great analysis. Quite often I come away from here hearing a song better, because you've found things I would not have in the song. With this kind of punk, I tend to like it in a fairly "stupid" kind of way if I'm in the mood for it on some day, so am pretty much self-preprogrammed to completely miss the point. Not today. Thanks.
(I also enjoyed it an a stupid kind of way, but that's just me doing me.)

I enjoyed this. I've not really given them a listen before - like you JP I have heard the band name but maybe I heard one song once? I checked out a lot of their later stuff on YT as I was curious and though they had clearly moved to a more mainstream metal style (I'm not too interested in sub categories hardcorejivethrashgeraniummetalpunk) the vocals and subject matter in particular show that they remained in a punk mold. Muirs vocals sound to me like Malcolm Owen of The Ruts on many of the songs (some sounded like Billy Idol) but there is a clear Motorhead vibe in much of it. The BIG difference between Punk and Metal at least in the initial wave of British punk bands (1976/77) was that apart from lyrical subject matter generally punk bands didn't do solo's (not just because many couldn't as they had only just picked up their instruments but because there was a conscious desire not to follow the established song writing dogma). The cliched metal guitar shredding in the later music gets annoying to me - every metal band does exactly the same solo with the exact same traits - a shame because the music was powerful enough without this.

My biggest pet peeve concerning this track is when people assume that because the title is "Institutionalized" they sing that in the choruses, when in reality they are just singing "I'm not crazy! (Institution!)"... first world problems, I know.
btw this whole album is bangin', and unfortunately it's the only album made by this line-up... by the 2nd record they had a different guitarist & drummer, and an altogether different sound, really. This came out in 1983, the version nominated for a Grammy in 94 was a re-recording for a compilation album.
