SST was a home studio black flags guitarist built so they could record 45rpm singles. Other bands signed on too. Greg Sage of the Wipers was doing the same thing in Portland and In Boston and Minneapolis there were a few DIY punk labels. It was these small indie labels that made later bands like Nirvana possible.

One of my favorite cassette's in HS while taking the city bus to and from school in 1984. The album is less than 30 minutes long. Possessed is my favorite track and as fast as the lyrics are sung I can still sing along with it today without missing a word.

Daniel ~ this is a punk anthem, serious. SST all the way. It was used in several movies, my favorite being Repo Man with Emilio Estevez (80s). Another really good movie that gives a taste of that scene was Suburbia directed by Penelope spheeris also 80s, which had real punks and a very young Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers.

YYEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUCH an epic tune OMG!!!! ST is SUCH a unique band/sound...which is why I think they were so popular by having that unique sound. I got to see them live in San Diego once, got Mike Muir to autograph a T-shirt for me too! We used to LOVE saying the line 'All I wanted was a Pepsi' in any given appropriate situation. Okay, onto the song...
If I remember, there IS a name for this style of music...kinda rap but also kinda not, spoken word rap-ish then into rock, ST were innovators IMO. LMAO...I KNEW you would pause there! At the end..."Doesn't matter, I'll probably get hit by a car anyway." (and now I see you got to read it on the lyrics) and there's another version where he says "Doesn't matter, insurance is about to run out anyway." And whoever did the lyrics on that page I think didn't know or have the original because it's 'institutionalized' at the end of the lines in the chorus.
Great reaction, told ya it was a bit deep. I always understood the basic premise of the song, that being a narrative of the crap some young people have to endure in their life. With emphasis on the "adult" world not taking responsibility for properly finding a solution to any given situation instead of shoving them off to an institutional world. Sometimes I see it like getting a puppy: cool to play with at first, but then as it gets older and the daily responsibility involved becomes tedious, it's no longer any fun and they are left alone, almost ignored completely...a time when they are wanting to be wanted most. Thanks for reacting to this Daniel, I knew you'd like it!

There was a period of time in the mid 80s when the Hardcore punk scene began to cross-fertilise with the more extreme elements of the Metal scene. At the time, it was referred to as "crossover". It was natural that the two would fuse, given the emphasis on speed, volume and anger. Suicidal Tendencies were amongst the originators of crossover, a scene which eventually spawned the likes of Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax.

I was in an institution when I heard this, so I extra appreciated it. The Intensive Diagnostic & Treatment Unit. It’s where they sent runaways & kids that got in trouble but were also bipolar, BPD, or had been m0lested. They took evrything fun except for a radio. The only decent station was a college station that played punk bands on Friday night. I was on 45/15 room plan, the most restrictive, basically you had to stay in your room 45 mins of every hr with 15 mins out. I was bored out of my mind & freaking out in this cinderblock square room with bright fluorescent lights. (The building was built to house German prisoners of war in WW2 & the fed govt sold it to my state for a $1). So I was 14, the boy I’d been seeing when I got locked up stopped writing me & I was locked up and not allowed to smoke, so punk music really got my vibe.
Ended up there for ovr a year. I dated a kid there who’d transitioned out of juvie after he shot his dad. He broke my heart. I made a toxic bestie who was in love with me & slept with my bf, & I got the best weed hookups. By the time I got home after a stint in a group home I was solidly a bad kid. Send your kid away for 2 yrs, don’t expect them to listen to sht you have to say.

It's all in the structure vs. The music. That's what makes this song amazing. The composition is so fucking conceptual and so many people see through that.
It's funny, many "educated" musicians can't see through these things. They're focused on the key, the melody,...
Songs like this specific one, makes them brainfart. Because that approach doesn't allow you to understand the level of story telling and different approach to musicality.

This takes me back to around 1983- I was 15/16 and not really into the punk scene, but where I lived I would see their band fliers on the street light poles etc(Black Flagg, Social Distortion) and this song was one that I enjoyed- it was not what I was used to listening to but very intriguing and I found it a bit humorous as he sounded just like myself and my friends in regards to our parents and life in general.
The whine is “real” I’m sure as the singer is probably 18/19 lol was fun to listen to this again :) you are hearing ( in comparison to the current day)the progressions in musical genres from when they first came out - same with metal etc. , you can hear the influence but it still sounds “fresh”. But the frustration of being tied up and blamed, restricted and demonized, while the perpetrators laugh and smile in your face, oblivious to their crimes. God almighty, I feel the ceaseless boiling anger at the injustice. Injustice itself may mainly illicit disgust and anger, but injustice born from ignorance calls for a special righteous fury. And this song did a great job at instilling it no matter when I hear it.

this song is about the boomer parents of the 80s that were so busy and stuck in their own little world that they didnt listen to their GenX kids, or were incapable of relating to their kid, but instead gaslighted them. its a horrible feeling and to be honest made me hate my own parents and do really bad shit on purpose just to ruin their day.
thats why these old boomers have been stuck in (institutions) so-called “retirement communities” by their kids. what goes around comes around, and as a grown up you have no obligation to deal with toxic people in your home, even your own parents.
looking back on this song he does sound a bit whiny, but then again hes not being taught respect by his parents. they keep pushing his boundaries, judging him, accusing him of being on drugs. he couldnt tell them anything, so he had to figure it out on his own, all the while they are drugging him with ritalin, prozac and provably on meds themselves.

I think it's more about a teen that has had enough from his parents they stereotype their son because of the way he looks and dresses and the music he listens to and he is tired of hearing it,it's the same way alot of teens that felt when I was a teen in the mid to late 80s I got stereotyped the same way because of the way i looked with long hair,Jean jacket, and liked metal music, people saying I use drugs and I didn't

Fun fact, Rob Trujillo who plays bass is now the bassist of Metallica. He also played bass for Ozzy Osbourne for a little while.

This is technically speed metal. With that kind of lyric delivery, you really do need the lyrics to help understand what the song's about. The song came out in '83, but I was introduced to it around '89, sophomore year. I had a few classmates who were skater punks and one of them lent me tapes of this band. It was an 80s teen angst/rebellion anthem, for sure.

Hey Daniel, good take on this song, if you watch the video you will see Timothy leary as his father. Also saw some of the yes videos and recommend "does it really happen" from the drama album...you do a good job on analyzing lyrics! Thanks.

Teenage angst. American skateboard punk. Not my flavor of Mountain Dew.
Ps, This song reminds me of Spock’s Beard’s Afterthoughts..albeit, a more comic and ironic version.
