Good Lord!! HIndemith never fails to unseat me from my musical prejudices. Along with Copland, Mahler, Bernstein, Gershwin Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninov, there is, for me....Hindemith.
At the opening concert in 1968 of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in their new home of Powell Symphony Hall, this work by Hindemith was the middle work. Opened with Beethoven's "Consecration of the House" Overture, followed by this work of Hindemith, and to conclude was Stravinsky's "Petrushka." All three works knocked my socks off!
This is the most uptempo version I could find on YT. I favor picking up the tempo. However, thi is a very fine work. Has some kinship to me as to THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT SEBASTIAN. By Debussy and orchestrated by Caplet.
ahhhh! The 3rd movement was the theme for the Afternoon Concert with host Russell Walsh on KUOM many years ago when it represented the culture and high mindedness of the UofM. Then they gave the station to the students who ruined it.
Agreed! Along with Mathis der Maler (opera and symphony), Nobilissima Visione is one of Hindemith's most profoundly spiritual scores. The image above might do nicely for one of his works from the earlier part of his career, but not for this!
Paul Hindemith music is so rich with melodies and harmonies, I never get tired of Hindemith's music.
Somehow this performance seems more "right" than many others. One of Hindemith's masterpieces!
I like the faster temp in the last movement. If it was also forte that would have helped also.

Jean Martinon's recording with Chicago is really terrific.
The best thing, classical music wise, I've ever heard live.
no, Klemperer's live w/ the Cologne Rundfunk (1954) is clearly better.

Bad image: the subject is Saint Francis of Assisi!

Good grief...what a mess.
A divine mess.
I wonder why you say that?
What exactly, in your opinion, is a mess?
