Recovering From The Holidays || $50 For Groceries Every Week In January || Part 1

  • Hey y’all! I forgot to tell you why I separate snacks from grocery. It’s because snacks aren’t a necessity. Some weeks we might not have the funds to add to the snack envelope. I can make snacks from scratch that week if need be. I like to keep everything separate so I know where the funds are going.
You notice that the snack envelope was empty. That’s because I didn’t add to it lol we have leftover snacks from the last few weeks and we aren’t really snacking much.
    Hope this video helps!
    Love, Brooke

I grew up in the 50's and 60's and my mom had a cardboard budget book with envelopes. Whenever she got paid she would put whatever needed to go in their envelope and that's how she kept track of her bill money, grocery and spending money. She was a single mom and over my years of raising children I am always in awe of how well she could save and care for my brother and I on her own. As she would say if short one week....I will just rob from Peter to pay Paul this week :) You are awesome Brooke, raising your boys in the right way, when they are grown they will always remember what you taught them

My pet peave is someone going way under the speed limit in the fast lane! Then everyone has to pass them in the slow lane. Good grief, if you're going to go slow get in the slow lane! I always saved every penny I could get my hands on for travel. Our kids got to go to Disney, Washington DC, Canada, and we visited many states. They both tell me now they don't know how I did it. They are very happy and have good memories! Their kids have not gotten to go near as much since everything has doubled or tripled in price since my kids were young. Glad you make it a priority too.

My biggest pet peeve while driving (you done got me started lol) When people don't follow the arrows in a parking lot.. I have been hit by people several times cause they don't follow the damn rules of the parking lot... and they speed like they're late to their own funeral...its a parking lot chill the heck out. People who don't dim their bright lights when they pass you and people who don't know how to stay in their darn lane!! LINES PEOPLE!!! sheesh lol Those christmas budget finds are awesome!!! Love stuff like that!! Meat and eggs have gotten so high..so we are trying a vegetarian diet for a little bit to see if we can stretch our dollars a little more. I love how you showed different categories. Like not everything is the same food budget. You have the weekly food budget of $50, the stock up pantry, household non food, and medical. I haven't had that many categories before. I just had food, non food household, like hygiene and paper goods and medical/ and first aid stuff.
    I like the different categories.

My biggest pet peeve when driving is when the person in front of me leaves their turn signal on and you have no idea what their intentions are so you have to pay attention constantly.....no talking to my passenger, no singing (in fact, I have to turn the radio off to eliminate that distraction), everything I was trying to remember flies out of my head because of this person in front of me who is driving along, not a care in the world, with their turn signal on, making me forget everything because I've got to watch what he's doing to avoid having an accident ---- UGH!!! Of course when I get a chance, and if it's lawful, I'll get the heck away from this person and pass them just so I can take my sanity back, lol.
Great video as usual 💕☺ Thanks so much for taking us along for the ride! It's nice being the "passenger" for a change 😂

When I started out budgeting many years ago I also used envelopes with cash. Since I don’t want to keep that much cash with me all the time, instead of putting cash into envelopes I write the amount of cash I am adding for say groceries on a 3x5 card. When I shop I use my debit card and immediately subtract the amount paid. I carry the folded over 3x5 cards in my wallet. I have gas, groceries, household, fun/eating out, medical, etc

I love when you tell us viewers to shop at more than one store. I know you know that's not possible for everyone. This is my tip and it works pretty well for me. For those that can shop multiple stores. I shop Aldi and Kroger's they are next door and Walmart is also close to me. So what I do is put my list in the Walmart app go first to Aldi's go through my list anything cheaper, I put in my cart double check Kroger's on a tablet, Then I go to Krogers across the street repeat the same process. What's left I get at Walmart. You can also do this using the pick up services and go through your list with all 3 apps my problem with that is I don't always end up meeting the mins for some stores and you can't get manager specials or discounted bakery items but if time is an issue it still works.

My pet peeve when driving is when people wait till the last minute to merge in construction zones (NV has road construction nearly 24/7 now). It holds all of us up and is so inconsiderate!
I, too, think Ramsey is a little too aggressive. We have done the Ramsey plan in the past, which is how we managed to pay off my 96k student loan. I'm getting back into cash stuffing this year because I want to challenge myself to focus on where our money goes. Like you, most of our utilities are autopay, as well as the 2 small debt loans that we have (for our furnace because it was the same price whether we did payments or up front, and for Bassett furniture for our new living room set). We also have a cash rewards credit card that we use on travel (3% back on travel costs, which we do often), 2% back on fuel (all gas goes on that), and 1% on purchases (used to use on groceries but I'm trying to break that habit). We budget for the expenses before we use our card and pay the balance at the end of the month. Because the credit card is tied to our bank accounts, we have the cashback rewards deposited into our savings every month. It's extra money that we consider to be part of our "Murphy Fund" (Murphy's Law: whatever can go wrong will go wrong. We call our emergency fund the Murphy Fund because of this principle). We usually have the card paid off every month although the last couple months have had a balance due to travel and Christmas expenses which I hadn't accounted for. I'm also switching back to cash for groceries because the cheapest store in our area, WinCo, does not accept credit cards for payment and I want to save money on our groceries.
Anyway, I loved your plan and I can't wait to see more this month!

I am trying hard to stay on a low spend budget this month too. I budget with the envelope system too. I use little dividers in my wallet... groc, household, my spending, my great grandbabies,, diapers/wipes, and food and snacks. Fast food...which is just one time a week for my daughter and I when we go groc shopping, and pu hubby his favorite burger. I have one for the carwash if it is really nasty. I also have a binder like that I use for... christmas, and bdays. And I have a leftover envelope for anything left from previous week...not always a lot to add but every dollar counts :) You can hold and get large amt to apply to a bigger bill to pay off early or just save up for whatever... :)

My pet peeve is someone coming almost to a stop to turn ever so slowly - go with the turn- I budget using what hubby calls the bucket method- money in the bank is divided into buckets like utilities groceries house payment - every penny has a place and my budget stays firm - savings is also in there and an emergency fund- it’s how I taught my children- if I use cash I can easily lose track but it’s all in a notebook which is an old school way but works for us

Good video. I like the envelope idea. I did that when I was raising my kids. I tried to encourage them to do that as well. Like you said, ya gotta do what's best for you and your family. ❤

Driving pet peeve...when a person speeds by (and I am already driving 5 to 10 over the speed limit), then gets in front of me and slows down! WT Hay!

I’m the same, I’ve been having my husband drive the last few weeks due to Christmas season busyness and for SOME reason the people who are NEVER out all of a sudden come out all during Christmas??? I may not be driving but I’m still honking using my horn from the passenger seat 😂
People who fly through parking lots , between cars, who fly at an angle rather on the road part where they are suppose to drive, also the TOO wide of a turn that most truckers need to do for a little sedan. People who get to close behind me, people who flash me thinking my high beams are on when they aren’t, being on back roads around turns and people DRIVE ON MY SIDE, oh yeah I’m laying on the horn. People who are only looking one way when pulling out to where I slam on the brakes and lay on the horn… people who FLY up to stop signs…. People who are at a 4 way stop sign intersection and steal somebody else’s turn and cuts off everybody else, people who don’t stop at stop signs… yeah all of that happened last month. I’m glad Christmas is over for those nut job reasons….I try and pray every drive we take and I thank God that He always protects us

You did better than me. I spent $90 between Walmart and my Kroger coupons. But it will last longer than one week but not quite 2 weeks. I love the way you use your budget binder. You should teach this to newly married couples.

If you and your husband both have the Walmart ap he can search for his items and add to cart, then you can see them on your phone and even click on the item to see what aisle it’s in. I use the cart as my grocery list and just remove each item as I get them. Tremendous help in budgeting too. If I stick to my list I know exactly what it will cost. I also use it to quick price compare at Aldi.

I love the budget binder idea. I have done this for many years with budgeting and envelopes. Late 2021 I added a 'ticket fund' envelope for any events we wanted to attend in 2022 adding a monthly amount to the envelope from there on. This worked out brilliantly and I saw three theatre shows that otherwise may not have been able to afford. Great stuff Brook! xx

People who don’t know how to drive- drive like a maniac- people who pull out in front of you- those that do not know how to use a blinker- people on their phones… whew.. that is enough- raising my stress 😂. Your son is just the sweetest! All things budgeting .

I live in the city, what would be considered by most as the hood. I have found that my local "hood" grocery stores have the best prices on meats. I just paid $1.69 a pound for blsl chicken breast and $2.99 a pound for ground beef. Don't be afraid to shop your "hood" stores for great deals.
As for a pet peeve, people who pull out of parking lots into your lane and go slow so you have to slow down to darn near stop to keep from hitting them. Even more so when you don't have anyone behind you so if they would of just waited 3 seconds they could of pulled out safely.

My driving pet peeve is someone who goes the same speed as you driving beside you. If you speed up, they speed up, if you slow down, they slow down and you miss your turn because you can't change lanes. Signaling doesn't help because they can't see your signal.

One of my "budget hacks" which I don't really see happen much in videos (probably because it would make the videos really long) is a two week plan instead of a one week plan (even if it means I might repeat the two weeks in a row.) Why? Because I would have loved to take advantage of that $20 chicken. Buy as much food upfront as possible and save things like a produce refresh for the second week (This may mean a $75/$25 budget for the two weeks instead of a $50/wk budget.) This makes sense to me, especially for families that get paid every two weeks and live on a two week cycle rather than a one week cycle.

I like to do it by the month, even. We may spend a bunch at Sam’s because we’re there and it’s an hour and a half away, and at the end of that month I may do a pure pantry-only no shopping week.

    • @yvonnepalmquist8676
      @yvonnepalmquist8676 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Knicole927 true, but most work their budgets to match their pay schedules and may not be able to swing additional budgets beyond two weeks, or may not have options like this. I was thinking about the pay check to pay check angle.

Brooke I bought the budget binder from your link! I also downloaded two different apps, one for a budget and the other to save receipts and categorize them for taxes! The budget one is called Goodbudget and the receipt one is called SimplyWise.. SimplyWise does charge though $23.99 a year for it! But just think about how easy taxes will be!

This is how people make turns in central MA:
Step one: slam on your brakes
Step two: contemplate life for a solid five seconds
Step three: consider flipping on your turn signal; maybe do it, maybe flip it the wrong way, maybe don’t even bother, whatever
Step four: proceed to turn at the slowest possible speed imaginable
