  • Former Opus Dei member discusses the surprising fact that members of Opus Dei aren't told the truth about Opus Dei's founder or Opus Dei's History.
BEST RESOURCES TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OPUS DEI:
    Best Websites
    Odan.org (Opus Dei Awareness Network)
Best English language website about Opus Dei.
    Opuslibros.org
Most comprehensive source for accurate information about Opus Dei. Includes many testimonies from former members. The “Correspondence,” “Your Writings,” and “Vocation Trap” sections are the most useful. It is a Spanish language website. However, by right-clicking and choosing “Translate to English,” Google provides a decent although imperfect translation.
    Best Books
Beyond the Threshold: A Life in Opus Dei , by Maria del Carmen Tapia.
The book Opus Dei hates more than any other. Ms. Tapia simply recounts her experiences of Opus Dei and Josemaria Escriva. The problem with this book, for Opus Dei, is that Ms. Tapia paints a picture of Josemaria Escriva which is very much at odds with the false hagiographies it pushes. And her writing is eminently believable. This book may be out of print, but used copies are generally available on Amazon.
Saints & Schemers: Opus Dei and Its Paradoxes , Joan Estruch.
1994 Oxford University Press book that traces the many contradictions in Opus Dei’s telling of its early history. Out of print, but available used on Amazon.
Opus Dei as Divine Revelation: Analysis of Its Theology and Its Consequences in Its History and People , E.B.E.
Former South American member of Opus Dei provides an accurate understanding of how Opus Dei sees itself. This book may be of interest principally to former members of Opus Dei. For anyone looking for a deep dive.
    NOT RECOMMENDED
Opus Dei: An Objective Look Behind the Myths and Reality of the Most Controversial Force in the Catholic Church , John Allen, Jr.
John Allen is an excellent journalist. Unfortunately, he widely missed the mark in this book. Kudos to the Opus Dei PR team for dodging a bullet!
Anything approved of or promoted by Opus Dei or its members
These works are pure hagiographies and do not even mention (let alone explain or contextualize) Josemaria Escriva’s many and serious defects. The histories of Opus Dei written by Opus Dei members or sympathizers omit so many important details that they can only be described as materially false.

Thanks for making these videos. I was a numerary for several years and I know that its not easy to explain Opus Dei to people that were not part of it.

Girl… I’m so sorry (not that you are not longer a numeracy, that’s ok if it wasn’t your call) but I’d be really sad if you left the Catholic Church and no longer have a relationship with God. I’ll pray for you

I left the Work as a numerary decades ago. I realize I have never really unpacked it all. It’s a bad memory and I did my best not to think about it. I’m greatly blessed with an awesome wife, many kids and now many grandchildren. And a fulfilling career. A great life. I kind of shudder thinking what my life would have been if I hadn’t packed my bag and snuck out of Riverside when no one was looking! Thank you for these videos. Transparency and honesty are a blessing - something completely foreign to what I experienced in OD.

Maybe you've addressed this in a video, but did you have trouble becoming a 'normal' Catholic again when you left in 2006 or after 2022 when you discovered the truth?

Are there any Opus Dei members who aren't MAGAts?
Or are they essentially one in the same?!

Very sad. So many lives destroyed. They are bleeding the Church dry. I think Pope Francis understands. I had terrible spiritual attacks when I prayed that yellow prayer card to him. At one point, I took several black hefty bags and cleared out my shelves of OD and all other material from there and threw it all away. I then moved out of my apartment and in with my parents for awhile. I had to get a lawyer. Just tragic.
I don’t agree with you though that the people - numeraries - are good people. What they are doing is evil. OD turns good people into evil ones. That is how I feel. They look good and sound good but they are bad.

I’ll be praying for you. I’m sad you went on that path, I it’s ok if ID wasn’t for you but I can assure you it is not bad, it is great and it does such an amazing job work. Everything about San José María is true and I really hope you are able to realize that some day. OD has helped me so much to love God and just in my life in the middle of the world. It doesn’t have to be necessarily your favorite but it’s another thing to o say that it lies and all that.

What if... you don't know what you don't know? What if you are judging by appearances and not reality?
