As a result of the change in the Thai tax law I am writing this comment from Cebu, Philippines. I decided that it was better to avoid becoming a tax resident in Thailand in 2025 by living in the Philippines for 62 days and then in Da Nang, Vietnam for 130 days --> which will keep me out of Thailand for 192 days (only 180 days are required but I want to have a safety buffer).
Prior to this I was a full time retiree in Jomtien, Thailand.
I find it sad that this new Thai government has decided to tax us retirees when we transfer funds into Thailand.

A simple search for 'expats leaving Thailand' or 'why I'm leaving Thailand' on TH-cam reveals many foreigners sharing their reasons for leaving. While Thailand remains an incredible destination, it's important to acknowledge the challenges that some expats face.

Something not mentioned. The change in the attitude of the people. Much more mercenary than before. Money is number 1. Overall the Thais are not as nice as before. I can do the comparison. I lived in Thailand 32 years. Read, write, and speak good Thai. Never accepted in Thai society. Foreigners are always regarded as outsiders. I have lived in Indonesia for the last 10 years. A much better country. The people are genuine, no fake smiles like in Thailand. Indonesia is like Thailand 40 years ago. Waiting for the comments on "Indonesia is a Muslim country". I will be happy to reply.

I think it depends on where you are. Btw, I have dual citizenship and passports, I was born in Indonesia, and have family there, but was raised in and went to university in Thailand, working here since. Indonesian people don`t have as much foreigners, so their smiles come much easier and are not fake I agree. But their smiles are not the same in Bali, as in i.e. Medan. Or Jakarta. So it varies. Personally I think Thailand still fit the bill best for retirees. There is no retirement visa in Indonesia, that`s one very important thing. It`s not as easy as in Thailand to retire there.

Is Thailand still worth it? No. Every single expat in my circle of friends from the 1990's has left Thailand. They were from UK, Australia, South Africa, U.S., Kenya, and Canada. None ever was able to get a permanent residency visa, though we all had work permits and I spoke fluent Thai. We all got damned tired of the yearly immigration visa hassle. I called it the "jerk-around." It really wears on you as you get older and is unwelcome stress.s (Yet, 300,000 Thais have a U.S. green card with automatic permanent residency and full civil and property rights. Why isn't it reciprocal?)
I would include other fine places that expats are going. Paraguay is far better today than Thailand, and cheaper. With reciprocal land and property rights and a simple, straightforward permanent residency in the first few years. Other locations in South and Central America are also far preferred to Thailand; closer by air to U.S./Canadian/Mexico/UK medical specialists -- another important factor that is often left out of comparisons.

  • @KpKp-s8z

The Thai immigration process is not overly complicated if you play by the rules and prepare and understand the requirements .
Regarding the taxation issues relating to expats living here, there are no issues if you are transferring in modest amounts of money for living expenses
Being a retiree transfeing in 400,000 baht living expenses from savings last year factoring in tax allowance and thresholds my tax liabilty was less than 5000 baht no big deal considering the infrastructure and living costs here.
Why would you want the expense of living in another nearby country for 180 days and all the upheaval ?

I don't understand this video. The rules for foreign ownership are about the same for Vietnam, Malaysia & Thailand... and the other Asian nations as well. Foreigners can't really get full property rights to real estate. All Asian nations are very protective and are designed to separate foreigners from their money as efficiently as possible. to my point 100s of millons of Asians want to get US Citizenship if they could because America has legal venues to secure this priviledge albiet not instantly yet NO culture or ethnicity is de facto discriminated against for applying for US legal status. Virtually no Asian country recipricates in a like manner. It is either almost or entirely impossible to get citizenship in Asia as a foreigner. Asian countries are very protective and racist and they simply do not care. They don't want their culture diluted by foreigners establishing roots in their country.

It's really how it should be, Thailand should be first and foremost for the Thais. I'm speaking as a Brit who is planning to spend at least some time living there. The main reason I'm leaving, is Britain is swamped by mass immigration, with ethnic British being minorities in many cities. Britain was my Homeland, it isn't any longer, I have no other Homeland, successive governments gave it away.

I certainly think other nearby countries are looking at Thailand enviously and would dearly like to take a bigger slice of the tourist/expat market. So there is increasing competition and certainly many other countries have advantages in terms of the issues raised in the video. On the other hand, these other countries still have a long way to go in order to match the comforts of Thailand. Long term, I think they'll catch up and Thailand may no longer be the first choice destination in SE Asia. In the short to medium in term however, I think Thailand will benefit from the ever increasing size of the market, even though it's share of the market will start to decline. Eventually, the Thais will have to address some of the issues raised in the video if they want to stop that decline.

Could be due to politics and economy?

It all really depend on different individual if the expats and retired from other countries, especially, from western America & Europe countries people, they were/are very rich people with their countries currency still strong enough and do not care much about their own safety life to having their saving to support them to stay and live in Thailand first and decide later for younger expats or retiree to enjoy their night life there, if they could/can secure a job there to live on if not still jobless they could leave and travel to choose another cheaper affordable countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippine there than to choose Singapore for excuses due to high living cost here and very safe life to live here that they never wanted. For rich and very rich people retiree they still prefer to stay in Thailand no matter what changes and taxes problem would/will not frighten them away because they already prepare and know they will still have big enough saving to support them to the end over there and they can still choose to live and stay away from those cities place like in Bangkok/Chiam Mai/Phuket to other parts and unpopular countryside province place in Thailand like Hua HIn, etc.

Lived there 2 years ! Poor, dirty, worst food ever and cost of living (Rentals especially) not cheaper than Thailand ! Very happy and content now in Hua Hin, Thailand !

@PaulHaig-eu3hw philippines only has a constant 5m to 6m visitors per year. These are facts. Singapore, vietnam, indonesia(bali) have about 15m visitors.

I think a lot of it id perspective. I moved here 14 months ago from the United States. My wife and i love lining here in Doi Saket. With all its imperfections i still love it, especially the people. Attitude plays a big role in how you feel about a place.

I'll take it, I've been married 16 years and it still feels like I'm on my honeymoon 😎

@ No, it means you have zero understanding of what is going on around you in Thailand. You can't even understand the extreme racism on the radio or at the check-out stand when they are talking about you. Etc, etc., on and on. All gaga. Honeymoon phase.
