Dan John is the man. I think the biggest takeaway is to just do something, even if it's 5 minutes a day and not optimal. That attitude is certainly paying off for me.
Thank you Juji. I don’t think Dan gets enough credit for his contributions to the strength and conditioning community as well as fitness community overall. His no BS, simple approach to life and training is much needed in 2024.
Dan is my role model for strength training. Many years ago I watched a video on him about loaded carries and I’ve been sold. All his books and videos and free content is priceless. Wondering weights is priceless. Plus he’s the best dude on the planet. I’ve had the honor of meeting him and having his phone number (he will give it to everybody at any seminar). I was at a perform better seminar and met him and spoke with him. Said that I was going out to eat and having beers with some friends and would he like to come. He did. We talked about training and life and he’s just the best dude and the best mind on training I have ever seen. He also tries and does everything. He isn’t pigeon holed into one way of training. He will try things. He’s also trained people for every sport. I just love the guy.
Dan John is as legitimate as they come and his programs are simple and easy to understand and get you results... so people... Don't mess with it and call it the same program
Dan is one of the guiding voices in my training. I don't follow his programs but he's formed the foundation of how I think about programming and introducing people to Resistance training.
This conversation is gold from start to finish. Community is key: you rise and fall based on those who you surround yourself with. I played sports but never well. I started working out just to be fit when I was in my late 20’s and was lucky enough to befriend the guy who ran the corporate gym I had available to me. Made massive strides. Now I’m 50 and a small fraction of my peers can keep up with me. I’m working out and spend my time with the dads from church who are in their 30’s and 40’s. And we push and motivate eachother positively. I love it. And don’t pass over good in the search/pursuit for great. Set a schedule and work to stick to it. Again, my peers (late 40’s and early 50’s) roll their eyes at me for working out. But people want their choices to be validated by everyone else. That’s why you have the “delay questions”. Love this segment Juji and Dan!
My husband is 56 and goes to the gym every day. He looks a lot you get and can work circles around the younger guys. Young guys at work ask him how he does it and what he eats to stay looking like he does. He tells them about working out but he doesn't follow a diet. He just doesn't gorge himself.
I first heard Dan John's name during Joe Rogan's interview with Pavel Tsatsouline, he spoke highly of Dan. Dan's podcast and books are amazing resources full of training wisdom and occasional dad jokes.
Awesome! Dan is so quick witted, I got the impression he was jabbing at juji along the way, very quick cheeky catty jabs. Dan is very observant of body language also, what an impressive man. Thank you to both gentlemen 🎉
Awesome!!! Many thanks :) I'm 66, have been training nearly all of my life, and Dan John is my go to guy for all things strength. When he talks, I listen :)
I also like Dan talking the financial and life stuff that is very on par with Dave Ramsey stuff. Emergency fund. Paperwork in order. Debt free. Etc. Health, financial, etc., just common sense stuff... but it's like super power these days!
Dan is such a great Coach. Check out his free podcasts and ressources! It is amazing how selfless he spreads his knowledge and wisdom he acumulatted during his life.
i like what he said. some workouts are great, some are absolutely terrible, most are normal. just gotta keep at it. i remember one time idk what was going on with me but i did ONE set of lunges with dumbells and i just collapsed from nervous system overload, i fell asleep like 10 minutes later on my couch XD
It’s awesome seeing Dan John getting the credit he deserves. He was my dad’s football strength coach and has even come to a few of my family’s tailgates. A very kind man.
In Incheon the local guys where I lived made a clearing in the woods and lifted used flywheels as plates on a cart axle for a barbell. That was the sum total of our equipment. Everyone was strong. I loved lifting there.
Loved listening to you guys. The best gym I ever worked out at, I was in construction and remodeling an old building for the Chicago police department. They had the 5th floor was their gym. Old rusty weights and bars on old steel pipe built benches. Had a Woden floor track around the whole floor. The cable machines did not have cables they were ropes and steel pulleys. I was at that building for a year. It was some of the best workouts I have ever experienced! I made up my own compound lifts and super sets. That old dark dusty gym. I loved it
While I was really excited to see Juji interview Dan, after watching the gym tour & Juji fan boy I was chomping at the bit to see the interview! Thank you Juji & thank you Coach!
Juji in this video's thumbnail looks like the dude in Altered Beast after it gets the ~2nd power up. He has maxed human potential and one more power up and hes going to turn into some magical bear that can turn people into stone with his breath.
And yes, he did mean in one set! Think there was a bit of cross-communication there. Each set of 30 was a single death march set. (Or at least that was what i got from reading about it in the past)
31:45 Do you have a recommendation alternative fish for salmon? Because I would love to be full, but i hate that taste. Will Halibut do the job? Catfish, though I imagine it isn't the same nutritional profile. Anything very light on that "fishy" taste. Hell, i like canned tuna, albacore or not. Will that do the job? not in oil obviously; I think it'd make me sick anyways lol. I swear I have no off switch for satiety, just "I have achieved physical discomfort from being full"
Tilapia is good. I smoked some this summer and it was awesome. I used salt lemon and cilantro on it. I don't think it's as fatty and idk how full it will keep you. As for filling you up, Tuna would probably work better.
Im a hard gainer. I do not gain weight. Teying to eat the amount of calories i need to lays me out. All i want to do is sleep. Ive kept a food diary. I just cant get all the calories down. Ive been eating three pancakes plus butter and syrup right before bed and im dropping weight.
What about the ramp? I think that's implicit in this discussion. In running, you can go from zero to a marathon in 6 months. People have done it in 3 or 4. But it takes 18 months for a normal 30's person to stimulate the stem cells in joints to repair faster than the rate of damage. There has to be something like that in lifting. Building too fast can cause problems in the long run. I meet heavy benchers pretty regularly who are in their 60's and shoulders are shot. That sort of thing.
About the January people, the New Years resolution people. I decided to join the gym in December because I knew I was going to be around for the long haul (that's what I told myself and so far it's true) and we all know January people quit so clearly, I couldn't join in January.
Would love to see the audio from these conversations go up on Spotify/Stitcher/Apple Podcasts at some point. I enjoy hearing what your guests have to say, but I, for one, am completely uninterested in sitting and watching a video of two people talking for 60-90 minutes. Could be I’m the odd one out here, though.
I usually really like Dan John's stuff (follow the podcast and own Easy Strength and ABC), but he comes across a bit arrogant and opinionated here. Maybe he was just excited to be on with Juji...
His point was that treating "dieting" as something specific and special can lead to spiraling behavior. My parents raised us dieting, my sister and I became morbidly obese. My cousins didn't grow up dieting, and didn't become morbidly obese. The other hour and 12 minutes of this podcast were about eating extremely healthy and being a lifelong exerciser. He literally showed pictures of his record breaking track and field daughters
When I started lifting 15 years ago, Dan was one of the first I read. He's the GOAT! Glad to see him getting some well-deserved recognition.
The "goat" ?

I love Dan's articles and books, it's totally focused on practicality, which is so needed in a world of marketing BS
Dan is one of the most underrated coaches out there. Not only a gentleman but a scholar as well
Dan John is a living legend. Respect.
13:35 "pretty good is pretty good" Juji shows he's a true Dan John follower
This is one of the best interviews of Dan John ever. I think juju is a great interviewer
So glad to see Dan on here. His books are pure gold. “Never let go” is one of the best books I have ever read.
Dan John, one of the Great Teachers of Strength (and even life) of our time.
