Here is some trivia about the film:
    1. When fully dressed and in make-up, Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley resembled each other so much that even Knightley's mother, Sharman Macdonald, who visited the set, had trouble identifying her own daughter.
    2. In the original Theatricle release version (and all versions up until the DVD release) Yoda was a puppet, just like how he appeared in Episodes 5 and 6. There were in fact tests to do him digitally and a digital version was used in one shot (a high crane shot where he promotes Obi-wan to Jedi Knight). It is only in all the releases since the DVD that he was replaced with a digital model.

    • @sfodd1979

Very FEW people, have a keen enough eye, to tell Knightley and Portman apart. I sure don't. It's not all that surprising, under all that make up, and they aren't speaking in their real voices. I'm always SUPER impressed with the people that catch that twist though. It took me decades, to find out Portman wasn't playing both roles. Also gotta love Lucas changing his movies, he couldn't wait to add more CGI, lol.

I've watched a few of Dasha's video now, and I'm impressed by her understanding and usage of english. And also she understands the concepts quickly watching a movie that isn't in her native language. And she really pays attention to the deatails going on in the movie to be fully immersed in it. Thats cool. And she got goosebumps the same time I did seeing R2 meet Threepio for the first time. And she immediately caught on the who Anakin was as soon as he introduced himself. That is a very clear indicator that she really pays attention to the movies and remembers the impactful characters. And Queen Amidala is also one of my favorite characters. Well done.

For me and a lot of fans who grew up with the original trilogy, the idea of the midichlorians was confusing to say the least. It was not needed in the original trilogy and makes me wonder if a blood transfusion and a little bit of practice could make anyone capable of moving things with their mind. But oh, well, it's there in the movies and became canon of the Star Wars Universe.

Yeah Lucas could made Anakin work without that "EPO" bs. Movie is not phD dissertation. Or study in ge sequence. Agree. Originals just hinted mystery and special gifts via energy and cosmos. That was enough to get feel for that. Mysteriousness was big charm of force IMO.

Midichlorian's were just dumb, they were supposed to be a big part of the sequel trilogy, too. Snoozefest. Lucas had some good ideas and some bad ideas. My biggest criticism of his is he just didn't make movies. Some where good, some were okay (like Disney). At least Disney is using the IP.

Midichlorians just feed off the force, and help you tap into it. That's to say, the stronger you are in the force, the more you'll have inside you. The force itself is still magic, midichlorians are basically just a way of ranking a Jedi's power level. They don't actually matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

Depends on if you go by the original canon or the new disney canon...well, actually in both you are wrong.
In Original canon the Midichlorians are the physcial manifestation of the force, its the "living" force Qui-Gon mentions. It allows Jedi to communicate to the force, because they are its physical form.
In Disney canon, anyone and their mother can become a Jedi if they learn about it and you can be born being able to do anything if you are powerful enough, a total oxymoron of itself.

You’re one of the few people I’ve seen catch that it’s Obi Wan in the beginning
That’s actually Darth Maul’s face. His skin is red, the black is tattoos
Technically Anakin rebuilt 3PO. He found his parts. 3PO is a very old droid.
Anakin is pretty much SW Jesus
Did you see the other of Yoda’s species on the jedi council? It was a female. Her name is Yaddle
A big thing in the prequels is showing the flaws of the jedi at the time, including a shift from focussing on the scientific rather than the spiritual, hence the importance of the midichlorians. Also arrogance. “I do not think the sith could’ve returned without us knowing.” The sith have been around longer than they think.
I hope you got that midi-chlorians are _not_ the force itself. The force communicates with people through them
I can’t tell if you realized but Darth Sidious is the Emperor from the original trilogy. He’s not the emperor at this time since the empire doesn’t exist yet

    • @david2869
      @david2869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think the main reason that people don't recognize the Emperor early is because they don't say his last name in the movies. If you have only seen the movies, you won't know his name is Palpatine, which is mentioned in other media. When I saw Darth Sidious for the first time, I knew the Senator Palpatine/Emperor connection, so I recognized him.

People familiar with the spin off material like the RotJ novelisation know that Palpatine becomes the emperor, but if you don't know that, it's not at all clear and is left shaded. In the Meta:
There are TWO KINDS of shields in SW. This is why there are 2 shield domes visible on every star destroyer.
Ray Shields stop energy attacks and can hold atmosphere pressure inside ships.
Partical Shields stop all physical objects from passing while they are up. These are effective against fighters and missiles.
Partical Shields were the first invented, to keep ships safe from meteoroids they might run into while traveling through space.
Ray Shields came into.being later when laser weaponry became common.
Ever see those scenes where fighters can dock in a larger starship's landing bay, while the atmosphere is still being held in the ship despite the open docking bay door? That's due to a Ray Shield being up that the fighter can pass right through.
Speed has nothing to do with shields in the SW verse, that's entirely a Dune verse thing.

But I thought it was so funny that it’s was obvious just reading the opening text crawl in this movie was harder for you. And it’s totally not your fault! The truth is it was hard for us English speakers to understand the first time we read it lol. The first three movies were written to be exciting and fast, talking about Rebellions and evil Empires, Death Stars and Jedi. On the other hand The Phantom Menace is talking about trade routes and taxation lol.

Fan fiction would imply fans made it, not greedy corporate types who tried to manipulate social movements to peddle half-assed poorly written and directed schlock. Fans may have been involved as extras, but you can't tell me they were involved in the actual production.
I compare it to how the original Turtles TV show pissed on the original comics. OR making a PG rated Robocop... or an R rated Kite. Or making a Ghostbusters relaunch without understanding that the "straight dialogue" is what made the original funny. The people making these things don't care about the originals, and sure as the hell aren't fans.

  • @oxhine
    @oxhine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey, Dasha! You picked out Obi-Wan right away! Good for you! A lot of reactors don't realize who Ewan McGregor is until halfway through the movie! You didn't notice the decoy swapping! 14-year-old Keira Knightley played the decoy Sabe! The decoy tactic was a security measure against the Trade Federation; Portman was herself when performing her duties but concealed herself whenever she was in transit and exposed. You also caught glimpses of the Emperor in his hooded Sith guise as Darth Sidious. However, this is the time of the Republic and he is operating in the shadows. Who is he unhooded? Lucas provides multiple visual and vocal cues as to who he is so let's see if you figure it out before the BIG REVEAL!
The prequel films are overly reliant on CGI which forced the cast to work with green screen backgrounds resulting in somewhat stiff performances from otherwise highly accomplished actors like Liam Neeson, Sam Jackson and Natalie Portman. There is also a romantic element later on that strains credibility. However, Lucas had complete control of these films and there is an internal consistency and scale of ambition that the more recent Sequel trilogy lacks. Many who grew up with the Prequel trilogy love it as much, if not more, than the Classic trilogy. Judge for yourself.
Jar Jar Binks is probably the most absurd character in all of Star Wars. He is universally reviled. Fortunately, you don't see much of him beyond this movie. The poor actor who played him, Ahmed Best, suffered such a professional and personal backlash for his portrayal, he became suicidally depressed. He has since made peace with his Star Wars past, thankfully. Jeez, what was George thinking?
Jake Lloyd would certainly have appreciated your appraisal. He, too, was ridiculed for his performance as young Anakin and so badly bullied in school that he dropped out. He turned to drugs and has been in and out of trouble with the law his whole life!
You wouldn't know it from the film but Anakin RESTORED a discarded C-3PO. He didn't actually create him. The two droids are meant to be the witnesses of the saga and appear in eleven of the twelve films. Lucas got the idea of servant witnesses from the Kurosawa samurai classic, "The Hidden Fortress".
Anakin is the product of a virgin birth like the Christian Jesus. Shmi tells Qui-Gon she became pregnant without a lover. In truth, the Force itself -- the universe as it were -- created her son. Who knows? Lucas decided to get metaphysical. It's kinda like Nature restoring balance. It's also kinda weird.
The Sith are Dark Side Force-users who are the ancient enemy of the Jedi. The Emperor and Vader were Sith. There were once legions of Sith but then a fellow named Darth Bane instituted the Rule of Two 1,000 years in the past. Since then, it's been a Master and an Apprentice jockeying for power and supplanting one another.
Midichlorians are based on real-world mitochondria that exist symbiotically in all our cells with their own DNA. If you remember high school bio, they produce the energy that powers our cells. In Star Wars, they are microscopic organisms that exist symbiotically within all living beings. The greater the number, the more one's ability to tap into the Force. Lucas was just establishing a biological basis for his space magic. Some people hate the idea. I think it's cool.
Jedi are trained as early as possible and removed from their families so they develop no attachments other than to the Jedi Order. Anakin already has emotional attachments which will cause him all kinds of trouble. The Jedi practice this to temper emotional outbursts and prevent any compromise to the psychically powerful adepts who constitute the Order. An uncontrolled rogue Jedi is like an ambulatory nuke!
You probably wondered about the efficacy of the Gungan shields since the droid troops marched so easily through them! Shields have different properties in Star Wars. The Gungan shields are likely impervious to fast-moving objects or objects with a high energy yield such as cannon blasts but are completely permeable to slow-moving objects or objects with a low energy yield.
Maul is the coolest villain. His species is called Zabrak. The red and black coloration are facial tattoos. Everyone's jaw dropped when they saw that double-sided lightsaber in the trailer! It's hard to kill a Sith, though; check out the animated "Clone Wars" for much more Maul! He impressively reappears in that series despite having been cut in half!

A lot of your surprises come down to a writing term called "retrowriting."
Especially common in sci-fi, retrowriting is when the writers change things AFTER they have already been established, or simply re-envision.things differently later.
"Metachlorians" was a retro-written explanation for the Force that Did Not Exist in the first trilogy. In the first trilogy the Force was mystical and spiritual, the way MANY fans think it should be.
But for some reason Lucas decided to invent a more scientific explanation for the Force.
Maybe he embraced a more atheist philosophy in those intervening years?
Also C3P0 being built by Anakin was retrowriting.
Also R2D2 being associated with Ben Kenobi was retrowriting. Remember in A New Hope Ben says "I don't recall ever owning a droid"?
Little Alzheimer's, there , old man?

Darth Maul is a Zabrak, a near Human species who all have variations of horns on their head, native to the planet Iridonia. Maul however was born and raised on a planet named Dathomir. The Zabrak on Dathomir all live under the matriarchal rule of the Nightsisters, female dark side force users. All female born Dathomiri Zabrak are raised to become Nightsisters. However, the males are all separated and raised in packs to become strong warriors and are then either sold off to work as mercenaries, or if they are strong enough in the force, they will be trained to become Nightbrothers, some of the best assassins in the entire galaxy. Maul has been given to Darth Sidious while he was still a child, and Sidious raised him to become a living weapon. BTW the word Darth is a title given to Sith Lords, not a name.

you asked about the shields and how the droids got in. bascially the way they work is the stronger something is the more they resist it so weapons fireing bombs and laser blasts are strong so it hits them back with equal force and it can't penetrrate, they droids got in by going real slow for a second giving the shilds little resistance.
btw. the pod race, my dad had told me it was very inspired by the chariot race in the 1960s movie Ben Hur. i had went to go watch it, it really does :)

Not a spoiler, but speculation: In Episode 6 Luke suddenly has a green lightsaber. There's a deleted scene where he goes to Obi Wan's hut on Tatooine and builds it from parts he found there. But where did he get the green Kyber Crystal that would give his saber its green color? It's speculated that Obi-Wan kept Qui Gon's lightsaber, and Luke used the crystal and is carrying an important part of Qui Gon's saber in Return of the Jedi. I love this theory.

While the prequels weren't my favorites I realized I wasn't the target audience, these movies have always been made for kids that adults happen to like as well. Many adults positively hated the character of Jar Jar Binks but a lot of kids loved him because they thought he was funny so in that regard, they were a success. Whether you love or hate the original trilogy, the prequels, or the Disney trilogy, it's all good because people have that right and should never have to defend why they love or hate a franchise.

This goes to my hypothesis younger generations of people aren't hating this movie. I really like Phantom Menace but agree the Midichlorian criticism because well it can be used to explain why some people are force sensitive it doesn't explain everything about the force. And in a way the Midichlorians take away the fantasy that anyone can learn use the force, it loses some of the mysticism with it. I think Lucas put these in there to lay ground work to what would become of the Whills which would've been part of his sequel trilogy but that's a path we'll never know.
