Gollum was played by Andy Serkis. He should have got an Oscar for making digital characters believable. They used motion capture to record his movements and face and "pulled" Gollum's skin on it. He played other memorable "digital" roles like King Kong and Caesar in the "Planet of the Apes". He made many "traditional" movies, too.
He also gave to Gollum their voice. It was inspired by his cat's coughing.

Actually,... his motion wasn't recorded. At least, not directly. He was on set in a skin-tight body suit and was recorded in all of the scenes with the other actors. But the motion of the CG Golem was hand-animated by the very talented people at Weta. Andy's work with motion-capture came in other movies.

Gollum is animated with CGI, however, he was played by Andy Serkis with sensors on him -the motion capture tech. So the interactions have a reference for the animators. That actor is specialized in Motion Capture roles (Cesar in Planet of the Apes, Haddock in Tintin and the Secret of the Unicorn, Snoke in Star Wars sequels...)
Gollum(s voice is 100% Andy Serkis voice however, he is a master to transform his voice like that.
What's on Theoden's sword is not a heart, it is two horses facing eachother. The same on top of the buildings of Edoras. (like Viking houses with Dragons but with horses instead).

One thing you might want to know...the balrog that Gandalf is fighting in the beginning is a class of beings called Maiar, who used to serve the Valar, which are like archangels. Gandalf himself is a Maiar. The balrogs served Morgoth, one of the Valar, committing themselves to shadow and flame in their service. When Morgoth was defeated, most of those who remained went into hiding deep within the earth. Sauron is also Maiar, just a bit more powerful than Gandalf.

Other way around, I think. Smeagol's about 15% more Disney-fied.

Christopher Lee (Saruman) is an interesting fellow. He was part of the Special Operations Executive in Britain during WW2, otherwise known as the "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare". This was a group instructed by Churchill to "set Europe ablaze", and they responded zealously. Lee was attached to the Long Range Desert Group in North Africa, who specialized in attacking the Luftwaffe assets supporting Rommel's Afrika Korps miles behind enemy lines. They were also the forerunners of the SAS. Lee was always tight-lipped about his SOE service, citing oaths of secrecy, but it came up on occasion. For example, Peter Jackson was instructing him on how a man would sound when he was stabbed in the back, and Lee said (paraphrase), "That's not what a man who's been stabbed in the back sounds like. I would know". Jackson took his word for it.

Gollum has a split personality/schizophrenic break. His mind broke after he committed murder to get the Ring, and he attributed all of the BAD things he did to Gollum, whilst Smeagol (his original self) was the good one, but was suppressed for a long time because of his association with the Ring. It's not until he travels with Frodo and Sam that Smeagol starts to re-emerge. That's why he keeps saying 'us', there's more than one person in that head of his.
The evil Men who swore allegiance to Saruman are the Dunlendings, Men from the region of Dunland who were displaced by the Eotheod (ancestors of the Rohirrim) when they were gifted the lands of Calenardhon in the Second Age by the King of Gondor for their aid in driving out the forces of Balchoth, a clan of Easterlings who followed Sauron. The Dunlendings who already lived there were forced out by the Men who would become the Rohirrim, and they swore they would get their lands back. They've held this grudge for thousands of years, and are eager to join Saruman in exchange for the lands of Rohan back.
The Ents were created by the Vala Yavanna, who seeded all of the green and growing things on Arda at its beginning. Her husband, Aule the Craftsman of the Valar, had created the Dwarves in his impatience to meet the Children of Iluvatar (Men and Elves), and thus the Dwarves were very much like he: craftsmen and miners who cared little for the damage they wrought upon the land in quest of metal and stone. Yavanna entreated Iluvatar to grant life to her creation as well to safeguard the wild places and the forests of the world against the depredations of Dwarves and others, and he did so, just as he did for Aule. Morgoth, it is theorized, created the Trolls as a mockery of the Ents, formed of stone, but unable to bear the touch of sunlight because they did not have the same blessing from Eru as the others did, and thus had no souls.
As Gandalf is a Maia, just as the Balrogs are, he and that demon were evenly matched (I love that line 'smote his ruin upon the mountainside'). The thing is, Gandalf wasn't allowed to die because his work of helping the free peoples of Middle-Earth was not complete, and Eru Iluvatar (God) resurrected him into his new role, as Saruman had had that duty prior and forsaken it. He's Saruman's replacement now, and much more powerful for it.
The Dead Marshes that Gollum leads Frodo and Sam through is the site of the Battle of the Last Alliance 3000 years before (the big battle with Sauron you saw at the beginning of the first film), that's why there are so many dead bodies there. Frodo is attracted to the marsh kind of like how a will o' wisp mesmerizes people into going to places they shouldn't.
The winged monsters the Nazgul are riding now are not true dragons, but Fell Beasts, corrupted serpent things. True Dragons have not been seen for a very long time in Middle-Earth, and even the last one fought was very, very small in comparison to the Great Wyrms that fought for Morgoth in the First Age (Ancalagon the Black, mightiest of all dragons, was so huge that when he was defeated, he was cast upon the three peaks of Thangorodrim and destroyed them utterly. THREE MOUNTAINS were crushed by this dragon's corpse.)

Me: "Ahh Dasha soon you'll see a portrayal of a split personality, schizophrenic character. He's having an inner monologue with his own personal demon." This type of disorder happen in for a long time in history but there was no clinical explanation of what was happening to Gollum/Smeagol. A Truly facinating character.

13:16 Interesting note here, that Scream that Aragon just let out when he kicked the helmet was real, as when they were filming this scene, and Viggo Mortensen (The Actor who played Aragon) kicked the helmet, he broke his toe, since there was a rock hidden underneath the helmet that nobody knew about. However credit to his acting skills Viggo used that pain of his broken toe to make his scream of anger and sorrow seem more real.
13:34 Aragon is a Dunedain Ranger, who are highly skilled fighters and trackers.
17:35 That not a Dragon, it can't breath fire and Dragon in middle-earth and much bigger, more powerful and intelligent. That thing is called a fell beast, a creature that the Ringwraiths ride
21:33 Mountain Trolls, like the cave troll we saw in the last movie, only a bit smarter and able to go out in the light, unlike Cave Trolls who will turn to stone if they went outside in the light
25:43 It was more like Saruman spirit was possessing and controlling his body, which was why Theoden looked the way he did and changed back to normal after Saruman was pushed out of him

Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast the Brown and the two Blue Wizards, Allatar and Pallando, known collectively as the Istari, were Maiar. Basically lesser angels who, even if their physical forms were destroyed, would always be reborn. Same is true for the Elves. an Elf never really dies. It's spirit just wanders the Halls of Mandos until i finds its way back into the world. The Istari were forbidden from using their full powers while in Middle Earth, except to fight things like Balrogs.
    Orcs were once elves.
The Balrogs used to be Maiar, like Gandalf. They threw their lot in with Morgoth way way way before the events in the movies. Sauron was also Maia.

Gandalf is a being called a Maiar.
In Tolkien's works there is Eru, Illuvatar, Eru is God. At the beginning of time he creates beings called the Ainur, they are basically Angels. The Ainur are further divided into two orders, the Valar (Powers) and Maiar who are the Valars servants, they took on genders appearances based on the forms that Eru had revealed the later Elves and Men would look like . There are 14 Valar (really 15) 7 Lords and 7 Ladies. they are a cross between high angels and pagan gods.
    The Lords are
Manwe- lord of the Sky and air, King of the Valar
    Ulmo- king of the sea
    Mandos- Judge of the Dead
    Orome- huntsman of the Valar
    Aule the Smith
    tulkas- the champion,
    Lorien-master of Dreams
There was A other Lord, Melkor but he wanted to rule and create and fell into evil and was later named Morgoth by the Elves and is no longer counted.
The Ladies or Queens of the Valar
Varda-Queen of the stars, Queen of the Galaxy Wife to Manwe
Yavanna- giver of Fruits, the lady of trees and plants.
Nienna- lady of mercy, considered the sister of Mandos and Lorien
    Este- wife of Lorien, healing
Vaire- rhe weaver of fate Wife of Mandos
Vana- considered the younger sister of Yavanna, Valar of flowers, wife of Orome
Nessa the Dancer wife of Tulkas
The number of the Maiar are not known but several play major roles in the story.
Mairon- originally served Aule the Smith but was corrupted by Melkor and became his second in command and would later be named Sauron by the Elves. After Melkor was defeated became the great threat to Men and Elves.
Orloin- wisest of the Maiar, served several of the Valar at Once, came to Middle Earth Earth to Oppose Sauron. You know him by the name Gandalf, the nane given to him by the Aragorns people the Dunedain who initially though he was an elf(the name means Wand Elf or Elf of the Wand)
Curunir- Saruman the White, who also initially came to aid men and Elves against Sauron but fell to evil
Aiwendil-Radagast the Brown, who you meet in the Hobbit films
The Balrogs-corrupted Maiar who served Melkor as Generals
And three you will not meet
Melian- a female Maiar who married the Elf King Thingol. Great great Grandmother of Lord Elrond and also ancestors of Aragorn(who is a descendant of Elronds twin brother) and Arwen.
The Blue Wizards Alatar and Pallando- who traveler far into the east and are nor mentioned after their arrival

      Thanks for the lore.
What happens to the two blue wizards would make a great set up for a spin off series, or an rpg.

    • @Aaron-io8vw

@@redjakOfficial is about 60 generations back.elendil and Isildur where descendants of Elronds brother Elros.
doors was First King of Numenor, the Fourth King's eldest child was a daughter and she was passed over for the crown at the time as the early human ore and practiced agnatic. Primogentiure (where male line descendants inherit before female) this was later changed centuries later so the daughter kind of got screwed out of being ruling Queeen(there where several later), her name was Silmarien and ahe married a nobleman named Elatan, there son was named Lord of the city of Anduine, Numenors largest port city , they become the leaders of the party that stayed loyal to the Valsr in secret after there cousins the Kings started.to turn away from the Elves and the Valar. Elendil who is the King Sauron kills in the prologue was the son of the last lord of Anduine Amandil and lead the survivors of the sinking of the island to Middle Earth with his two sons Islidur and Anarion. Aragorn is a direct descendant of Elendil through Islidur father to son over 37 generations
So Aragorn is Stern's first cousin 60 something generation removed. The family connection is why the Kings of Anror and their descendants the Chietains of the Northern.Dunedin fostered their heirs at Rivendel. Aragorn spent more time there compared to his ancestors because his father, Arathorn was slain by Orcs when Aragorn was only 2. Arwen was staying in Lothlorien during Aragorn's childhood and he did not meet her till he was around 20. Elrond raised Aragorn like he was his own son, in the novels Elrond has the gift of foresight and he saw that Aragorn had the potential to take the Throne of Gondor and set this as a requirement for his consent of Aragorn and Arwen marrying. He is not against it like in the film, he loves Aragorn like a son, he does not hate humans.the way he seems to in the films(he is part human himself) and is just sad he will lose his daughter to mortality.

When Aragorn kicks the helmet and lets out a scream, that scream is real. He wasn't supposed to scream at that moment, but he broke his foot. Peter Jackson (the director) liked the raw emotion that it portrayed, so they kept that take. Also, they obviously couldn't really do any more takes.
Also Gollum refers to himself as "us" and "we" because of his dual nature. He is Gollum and Smeagol at the same time. Notice the first time Gollum says "me" or "my" instead of "us" or "our" is when Frodo first calls him Smeagol. Pretty cool.
And John Rys Davies, the actor how plays Gimly, is the man doing the voice for Treebeard.

New Zealand is fascinating to me from a nature perspective. It really shows the duality of volcanoes their ability to create as well as destroy. Also before Europeans the Islands looked MUCH different, they were covered in all sorts of native vegetation that were virtually wiped out when the Europeans introduced the greatest lawnmowers of all time: goats! to the islands. Goats dramatically changed the landscape of New Zealand and are now considered pests in the modern era.
It really is a fascinating landscape.

"How are they going to fight evil if they aren't even soldiers?"
You've just hit on one of the major themes of the story: Of all the mighty kings and powerful beings involved in the conflict, it's ultimately the humble Hobbits who have the biggest impact on the War of the Ring.
Viggo Mortensen's (Aragorn's) reaction when he kicked the helmet was real. He actually broke his toe, but it fit so well that they ran with it.
The swamp is very much is cursed. The Dead Marshes cover a sizeable part of what was once the Field of Dagorlad, which is where the final battle of the Last Alliance (where Sauron was defeated in the prologue) occurred. All of the dead who were buried on the field wherever the marshes encroached can be seen by travelers passing through them.

After Gandalf died fighting the balrog, he was sent back in white instead of grey because Saruman had betrayed his post and Gandalf had been promoted to "leader" and allowed to use WAY more of his power.

The other is the personality created by and through the Ring, itself: Gollum. (In the books Sam calles them "Slinker" (Smeagol) and Stinker" (Gollum). The character is a classic case if a "Multiple Personality" disorder.
