    Hey great video. I just wanted to let everybody know that as soon as you take the back cover off the next step will be to remove the battery. You never know when you accidentally going to drop something in the system board and when there's power going through it you could cause a short and burn out your system. It's also a good idea to make sure that the unit has no power going through it while you replace any parts on it. I hope this helps.

    You make a Great Teacher! Well Explained and Demonstrated. I could not get the back off my Elitebook. I did not see the screw on the side by the Dust cover!! Now i do!! Many thanks I can replace my Battery now. Very Grateful. Andy in the UK.

    Great video. I've built a few desktops and upgraded a dozen laptops, but I've never worked on this model before, so thanks for posting. Also, I really liked your tip on threading the screws! I've never seen anyone do that. Genius!

    Very helpful! I've used HP Elitebooks for years, and always like the ease of opening the older models. When I got an Elitebook 840 G3, I was a bit hesitant to open it up, without first checking out some videos. Yours was the best, and clearest. I would've missed that tricky screw that hides under the SD Card slot. Thank You! 💯

    Thanks for the video. It helped me get inside my G50 G4 to add a SATA SDD in addition to the m2. One missing item for discussion is that there are no retaining screws nor is there a cradle for the secondary drive. It's not apparent what is required because you definitely want to either retain it or fill the gap between the back cover and the top of the drive.

    You can always tell a pro. I honestly couldn't do my job without my iFixIt kit that includes the magnetic driver. The knurling is excellent for those really tough lock-tite screws and the (non-captive obv) screws follow your driver right out of the PC. I had one client that pulled off all the rubber feet, and then broke the base cover thinking the "hidden" screw under the SD card dust guard was under the rubber feet.

    6:08 I visibly sagged in relief. I worked in a computer store for a year and some nasty laptops needed us to take the back off, then the keyboard, then the front too in order to access the HDD. I have a 850 G3 with 8GB, i5-6300U, and a 128GB SSD. I got it for $225, works perfect for school in 2020. Nice to see I could add an extra SSD for more storage.

    Tks for great vid. Question:
    From the HP EliteBook 840 G3 manual:
    Dual drive configuration
    : System can be configured with a hard drive and M.2 SSD drive.
    From the manual it seems to support only a combination of M.2 SSD and 2.5 HDD (not 2.5 SSD). Is this correct? Thanks

    you should put front of the cover on first as there are little hooks. Also never let your CPU fan spin so fast when dust spraying it. this kills the motor. hold the blades down then spray!

    The 850 G2 series is a lot easier to crack open. The back is in two pieces. All the stuff he did to remove screws and the rubber covers is unnecessary. One slide lock frees the removeable part of the back and the commonly upgraded components are readily at hand.

  • @michaelyockey5710

    The 950 Pro WILL fit in this machine. HP finally changed the M.2 Slot to a 2280 (80mm long) industry standard slot on this. The previous G2 had a 2242 PCI Express M.2 slot and the G1 had a 2242 M.2 SATA only slot.
    I purchased an Elitebook 820 G3 for a customer and upgraded it to 16GB of ram and a 950 Pro SSD. We "dual drived" the machine by adding a 2TB 5,400 RPM SATA drive for data only storage and the 512GB 950 Pro for the boot drive. Fast as shit.

      So, HP 820 G3 may have SSD in M.2 and HDD/SSD in SATA slot at the same time? Datasheet says that it's not possible - "Only a hard drive or an SSD can be installed. To install a hard drive, be sure that the standee is stored
      beside the hard drive slot and not installed across from the SSD connector."
      Also do you have any cons on this device?
      Thanks for sharing

    • @SpinUpMaster
      @SpinUpMaster 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a 820 g3, now with two SSDs: One in the M.2 Slot (500 GB) the other (250 GB) in the Slot for the 2.5 Inch Slot. They can be used together, the trick is to open the 2,5 Inch case and use just the pcb. With the new 850 Evo from Samsung, it should be possible to use 2 TB (1 TB 2,5" and 1 TB M.2). That's a whopping 2 TB in this small Notebook!

    • @MaoriNinja
      @MaoriNinja 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tardymo technically, it is - its the NGFF (next gen form factor) mSATA drive, dubbed "M.2" slot (so, mSATA second gen slot). NVME SSDs can go in there too (if the M.2 slot is setup to attach to the PCiE x16 slot). HP have the Z turbo drives which are the PCiE based SSDs which you can have installed @ factory by HP (you can CTO them too). Good vid Eganwp - Cheers

      I wouldn't call M.2 drive an mSata. Those are two different standards and even though M.2 also supports SATA interface, technically it is not an mSATA. How can you call a drive being mSATA second gen, if in many cases it does not even have a SATA connection (like NVME drives).

    • @MaoriNinja
      @MaoriNinja 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair enough - I get your point, but then why call it an m.2 drive if not, msata 2nd gen? What other relevance does the naming convention have to the storage form factor/

    CPU is not upgradeable, or let's say not easy to do, it is not in socket, soldered on board.
    SSD for upgrade can be 2.5" SSD or HDD, or M.2 format, dimensions 2280, SATA (max ~500MB/sec transfers) or PCIe NVME protocol supported (aka HP turbo drive G2, like Samsung XP 951 and newer, 1.5GB/sec).
    zbook 15u G3 is the same chassis with the same expandability

      You can drop higher rated U series into these laptops, the TDP rating must be achievable by the system so you'd have to do some digging in intel Ark to find a good solution, it can be done and I have done this before in earlier models. Check hp's page for suggested cpu upgrade options for this model.
