    3 months ago, I started crocheting again after a 12 year hiatus. I saw this pattern and wouldn't even click on the video because it looked so intimidating. And now that I've gotten myself into a groove, I decided to attempt this for an Heirloom Afghan... I CANNOT put this down!!! Mikey, you have been one of the greatest sources of knowledge and "yarnspiration" in my journey back to crochet. How I lived without it for more than a decade, I just do not know. But I am so grateful to incredible people like you and I absolutely thank you for your teachings!!!

    Just finished this blanket for my Nana's 70th birthday. She is the one who taught me out to crochet when I was little. I loved this pattern and was excited to give it to her. She said she has made plenty of blankets for people but no one had ever made one for her. I ended up just making it a lap blanket with about 7-9 balls of Tea Cakes (I lost count). Great video and pattern!

    I’m such an impatient person. I almost gave up because I was getting lost, but I just kept rewinding and stopping and by the sixth row I had gotten the hang of the pattern. You’re a good teacher. Thank you!

      I have been crocheting for almost 2 years now. I too can be impatient. Learning to read patterns was a struggle. With pattern reading and this video. Sure did help. Hands on training lo :-) Happy Crocheting!!

    • @atherapeutictouch
      @atherapeutictouch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ricomakeda you can. I've been doing it since he said to slipstitch 7. Just slipstitch into the nearest single crochet or chain. (Should be only one) then follow the pattern set by the row beneath.

    Oh I know this pattern! It is also sometimes called The Beautiful Shells pattern. I found the tutorial for it using cotton yarns a couple of years ago on another youtube channel that I subscribe to. Have a made a few blankets using this pattern. It is great to do when using gradient yarns like caron cakes or others. Or when you combine gradient yarns with matching/complimentary solid colors. Keeps yarn costs down but still creates a stunning blanket.

      @Starfire Horizon -Hi there! It turned out really nice actually. I use it when it is chilly outside or in the house and I need a bit of warmth. But don't want to break out my winter lap blanket. Really good for a summer bedcover too. I don't get overheated like I normally do but was still comfortable under it in the air conditioning. I can't sleep without some type of light blanket on me. Worked like a dream. The caron cotton cakes would be perfect for this pattern. Also good for babies and kids blankets too. Definitely recommend the blanket idea with this yarn. :)

      How to Crochet with The Crochet Crowd That's kind of funny if my memory serves right. It was either Caron Simply Soft 6 oz. or a different brand that had a plum color that was called "Plum Perfect". If it's Caron Simply Soft instead of Premier Eversoft Yarn, it would be "oops! We already named a colorway "Plum Perfect"! I think Yarnspirations has Premier Ever Soft on their site... does that mean....?

    Love this pattern, Mikey. I decided to finish my edges a little differently, though. I single crocheted one row around where the chain 5s are, trapping them as I went along. Then, I did a row of slip stitch in the back loops. Very pleased with the clean square edge. I plan to add 4 tassels to corners just for fun.

    I would like to put this out there. Some people have said this is like the beautiful shells blanket when it's not. Bc starting at row 5 it's different, this pattern says slip stitch to the corner & start every round in the corner vs the beautiful shells blanket where you back stitch into the sc from previous row to start the v stitch, which confused me. I've watched a ton of videos in the past few days. Bc my blanket wasn't laying flat following this pattern video alone. Lol but I've come to learn I probably messed up somewhere or my tension was getting looser as it was getting bigger. Lol. Love everything you do Mikey! Recently saw a video & glad to see you're feeling better! Much love from a small town in Western Kentucky.

    On row 5, instead of slip stitching 6 times over the shell, you could just chain 4 and turn your work. Then create the “v” stitches right back into that last SC from the previous round. I like to turn my squares so that both sides look the same.

    • @lorainecomerford1727
      @lorainecomerford1727 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Turning will not make both sides of this blanket the same, as one of the two pattern repeats is a chain and a v so not distinguishing enough to matter :-(
      I did not slip stitch 6 times to get into the corner, just joined with a sl st where I was and proceeded from there.

  • @Walk3955
    @Walk3955 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I find it easier to chain 5 instead of chain 4 in the beginning because it wasn't doing the chain 1 in the beginning when I joined and it confused me. Love it ❤️

    It make more sense to me to do a couple of slip stitches at the end of the odd rows to finish directly in the corner with a 1ch, sc in the chain 3 space. Then on even rows finishe with the 7dc and slip stitch to the centre sc. 4 ch and continue to complete the corners as before. Because you are then working over the slip stitches with your 7dc on the next round you never notice them . Just a thought since I notice in you tutorials for the rectangle versions that you recommend cutting the yarn and restarting every 2 rounds 😉

    I love this blanket and the yarn is so soft! The one thing I will say is that I think an 8 mm Hook is way too big! I didn't have that size so I started using my k and it looked great but then I had my Catholic guilt and had to go get the proper size. I made the center again and it came out so loose with giant holes so I tore it apart and started with a K again. This is not meant as a correction for anyone of course I'm just saying that for people like me who may be loose crochets, you may need to go down a size or two.!

    Is this stitch the Bavarian stitch? If so, could you please teach us how to crochet a waistcoat with that stitch? I'll be on to lookout. Many thanks for all your beautiful projects, which are always very well explained.

    I always have trouble finding the written pattern & graphs. Can you please point in the right direction. I love your tutorials, so easy to follow on video.

      If you are meaning for this tutorial, the video descriptions we use for all videos have the link to the referenced materials in it. Does that help?

    Is this based on the Beautiful Shells stitch by Joanna Martinez? I’ve made several of those afghans. They are fun & beautiful once you get the gist. It also looks a bit like her other two stitches, The Virus Stitch and The Grandmothers

      I'm really not sure. There was a pattern done a decade or so that looks like the Virus Stitch that predates the Virus Stitch. So patterns in time morph and resurface. Some of the existing patterns are recorded in the middle of the 19th and 20th centuries that we think are new but are centuries old.

    This pattern is really pretty. Can this be made with the chunky Caron anniversary cake yarn? Would that be the same as this one you’re using?
