One of my pet peeves regarding hair stylists is, once they have cut and styled your hair, they turn you out of the chair without any instruction on how to style at home. So, naturally, I go online and find you...someone who is more than happy to put in the extra hours creating content so clients of OTHER stylists can learn how to style the cut. I appreciate you and Dionne for all of the extra hours you put into to these videos. It must be like having two full time jobs! Just keep on keeping on...spreading knowledge and most of all JOY ❤
@@nowaynohow1275 thank you so much for this! I sincerely appreciate it and it makes me feel so good to know that I am helping you like that! Thanks again.
I have been watching for a long time now and always learn something valuable. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and the only reason they criticize you for this is jealousy. Forget and forward.
I'm not a cosmetologist. I'm just a regular person with curly hair seeking knowledge about hairstyles, styling, etc. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks, Justin. It is so helpful.
what are your thoughts on those blow-drying brushes? Do they help with volume or do they just make the frizz worse? They do seem to dry hair faster, but I'm not sure if they are really great for my hair
Any information shared is always worthwhile. You explaining HOW to cut hair doesn’t mean I’m going to stop going to a stylist, it just helps me to better COMMUNICATE with a stylist.
EXACTLY! Thank you! It seemed so crazy to me to have a cosmetology instructor say I was being unethical for instructing clients. I think it's unethical to NOT help your client get the best results regardless of how they achieve them.
@@justinhickox If this person’s logic is true, which in my opinion is completely incorrect, then all the dermatologists, makeup artists etc who create content teaching would be “unethical” as well. To me it doesn’t make any sense how this is unethical. Teaching gives people valuable information and more confidence to be able to make better choices!
No you are NOT off base. I have always thought part of going to your stylist should include how to style one’s hair. I always leave loving my hair but when I style at home, I hate it. I love what you are doing.
Considering the millions of people who go to hair dressers, I find it hard to believe you can "hurt the industry" by teaching. That complaint was silly. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
As a former cosmetologist, I think it’s good that you teach clients how to work with their hairstyles. So often people complain that they can never achieve the same look at home that they get in the salon. Your videos have taught me a lot. And your wife has even inspired me to cut my long hair shorter. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Knowledge is power which equates into confidence. This helps is communicating with my stylist in a way that makes us on the same page so I walk away as a happy customer. It’s a win for both of us. Thank you
This is the best point - that people come out of the salon after a cut-and-style with this "great" look only to not be able to re-create it at home! What is the point??? There is FAR more value in getting taught how to make your hairstyle great everyday than to just go in and get a bob and wave good-bye and have it fail the very next time you wash and style it! I'd pay more for that kind of service - I don't get it at my salon, sadly, but this video of yours has given me so many tips, I'm so grateful! (I'll also caveat that by saying I've never asked for good tips, either, so there's that...) Also, I agree that it really does help to have this kind of info when working with my stylist. So kudos to you! Those folks who think you're hurting the industry and spilling "secrets" need to take a good look at their own fears and deal with those instead of lashing out at helpful folks like you. ;) I'm going to re-watch this and take notes now for tomorrow morning when I style my own new bob. :D
As a client, this would be where I’m coming from. I want to know what will and will not work for my hair. In fact, it’s helped me understand to stick with a stylist and communicate what I want, instead of stylist hopping.
As a hairstylist for over 40 years I think it’s 100% our job to educate our clients in how to style their hair properly! In my area ( rural small town ) a lot of women don’t want to bother but the ones that do need to know and often ask what do I use and how do I make it look how I do! It’s our livelihood walking around out there and if they get compliments right there is a referral to you and hopefully a long time client. You’re doing the right thing and don’t let the few that disagree stop you from these awesome videos!
Exactly! That is how I found my hairstylist in the first place. And now I get A LOT of requests to know who my stylist is and happily share her info because I love her so much! A huge thanks to excellent professionals like you both who are more concerned about their clients so that they are happy with their cut and keep coming back, rather than being frustrated by not being able to replicate the fresh-from-the-salon look. I have dumped many a stylist because I couldn’t make my hair look like they did. Truly my cuts could last me many months but I religiously go every 8 weeks because I love the feel of a fresh cut and color. And I love my current stylist.
Plain and simple: Almost all of us are never going to quit going to our stylists but love having the information provided here to better communicate with our stylists. Thanks for all you do!
As a retired stylist I always taught my clients how to style their hair. That's what good stylist do and the client will trust you more when you take the time to show them how to. Great video.
Your videos have transformed the way I style my hair and crucially what I discuss with my stylist. Fabulous videos - ignore any negativity. The number of subscribers you have speaks for itself. Thank you 🎉
@@justinhickoxI went from hair almost down to my lower back to a bob much like the client in this video! I found you through Nikki LaRose and her discussing the Creator House! I learned so many great tips on how to actually style my new bob from this video! I can’t wait to wash and try these tips and tricks!!! There will always be opinionated people online, keep up the amazing content! I have subscribed and will now go binge watch all your videos! Lol 😅
@@KayKell1215 Thank you SO much! I love Nikki! It was SO much fun hanging out with her and all the other creators at that house. It was nuts to be around that many creators that are THAT successful and so NO ego from ANYONE! They all deserve EVERY BIT of success they have and they're all SO inspiring. OH, and they're just good humans. I appreciate your trust and you hanging out with me on my videos! How much do you love your new cut?!?!? That's a HUGE change!
@@justinhickox You’re very welcome!!! 🫶🏼 Yes, I follow all the creators and you were the new creator I looked up and seeing the bob video, I was like YESSSS I need this!!! Such an informative video! Great job!!! 👏🏻 I am sure it was so much fun connecting with fellow creators!!! Oh if any of us could be a fly on the wall at the creator house, my guess would be we would be laughing and having fun!!! 😄 At first I was kinda in shock after I chopped all my hair off, but now I absolutely love my new cut! I am still having a hard time trying to curl it because the bottom is so short 😬 haven’t quite figured out that part. Also, my hair seems to become more oily quicker than when it was long. Is that a possibility?
Justin, as per comments at end, you’ve taught the public how to care for hair properly in between our visits to our favorite stylist. We don’t have a glam squad on a payroll doing it for us every day. You teach us to protect and care properly for our hair daily so our stylist can enhance our best selves.
I can’t cut or color my own hair so I will never stop going to a professional stylist. But I do appreciate you explaining and demonstrating how to style my hair at home in between salon visits. I can’t afford to go to the salon every time I wash my hair. You are doing a great job. Don’t stop helping us look our best!
I am not a cosmetologist and I watch your videos so I can intelligently answer my hairstylist when she asks, “So what are we doing today?” Your videos help me feel less dumb when speaking with her about what I want my hair to look like when she is done.
I, as many women, have walked out of a salon frustrated with not knowing what to do at home to get the look I want. A stylist has limited time while I’m in the chair, that time is consumed with whatever they are doing that day. There’s little time, if any, for them to have me style my own hair while in their chair. Bottom line if my hair looks good and someone comes up to me and asks who cuts my hair then I’m promoting the stylist. Please continue to show us the tips as a lot of us need all the help we can get!
Exactly! If I were to ask her to teach me how to replicate how she styles my hair, it would take up her time that she could be working on her next paying customer. Sometimes she has a few extra minutes to teach me a little, but never as much time as just 1 of Justin's videos.
Absolutely agree with these comments. Learning so much - loved the video explaining thick hair bs lots of fine hair. This time volume bs control and asked my stylist to show me how to control my hair back from my face so I could show off drop earrings. I absolutely loved what he did, it made me look younger!! You give us the language that allows us to communicate more effectively with our stylist. Thank you.
I think it’s great that you educate the public. We still go to stylists, but we never know what to do with our cut when we get home. This helps a lot. I would ignore those negative comments. You’re doing a great job! 17:39
the person responding to you in such a negative way is actually reflecting their own insecurities. It's nothing about you and all about them. Ignore it. I'm personally very grateful for your videos.
They are reflecting their own insecurities from their incompetence. I have a feeling that stylist had clients show her Justin’s videos and she couldn’t replicate his results. People are realizing what a good haircut and styling should should look like now!
I agree with you! Also, I’d like to add a few opinions. The “Negative Karen” (double innuendo intended) I find her Selfish, Greedy & she has Devious Motives! Not a nice nor decent woman! And I say thank you so much to Justin Hickox!
I'M EX VIDAL SASSON. FROM WAY BACK IN THE LATE 1960S... CUTS LIKE THE BOB WERE What we, were all ABOUT.... the CUT was the most important thing THEN WE WOULD blast dry no fiddling around with round brushes the cut was so good it just fell into place NO FLAT IRONS USED AND YET A POLISHED LOOK WAS, ACHIEVED... OH MY GOODNESS.. I'M 72 NOW AND REALISE HOW GOOD MY TRAINING WAS... 💫👌🌟
❤️❤️❤️ yes, yes, yes. You are absolutely right. I was a teenager in 1960’s England and got my first bob at the Vidal Sassoon salon. It was exactly as you describe.
I love the fact you get in depth on what you are doing, why you are doing it, and, explaining to the client how to achieve maximum results for their style. Most and EVERY stylist I have been to have never taken the time ti explain to me what they were doing, so my style never looked right when I styled it myself. Keep doing what you are doing!
Thank you so much! I’m so happy to hear this. That was always my intention with my channel. It feels great to know that I’m accomplishing that goal! Thank you for this!
Knowing how to work with my hair actually makes me happier with my stylist. You are providing valuable information that helps regular people, which makes them happier about returning to their stylists. It’s a win for both parties. Thanks for all that you and your wife do to help people achieve their hair goals.
I'm surprised by the comment posted by that hairstylist. Now, I can't speak for everyone, but for myself, your videos made me realize that I wasn't thrilled with my hairstylist or my hairstyle. I thought I was communicating what I wanted, but every time I left, I wanted to cry. She was a wonderful person, but I just wasn't equipped with the right communication tools to express myself and so she kept giving me the same haircut. Finally, during covid, I called a different hair salon. I won't lie, I was scared. Hairstylists can be very intimidating. But they were so kind! The stylist asked me a lot of questions (no one else had ever done that)! Thanks to your videos, I was able to tell and then show her some ideas that I liked. She was so nice. She respected my wishes about keeping a certain length and since my grey was showing, and the ends were turning redish, she came up with a solution to save me from having to get color every 6 weeks. Anyway, recently, you had a video where you talked about texturizing. I went last week and asked her about maybe shortening my hair, adding bangs (I had pictures), and texturizing. She lit up! She said she could do a little or a lot depending on how I liked it! I'm already talking too much, but I ended up telling her to go for it since I trust her now! But I got ALL of my ideas and my nerve to speak up from watching your videos and taking notes! This last haircut is amazing! I love it! I was dancing when I left the salon and couldn't wait to show it off! So please, don't stop doing what you do! Goodness! Where will I get my ideas for my next style?😂❤❤❤
Wow - to go from crying to dancing - that's big. Happy that you found someone who communicates and works with your wishes each time. Asking questions is SO important. Thanks for your support - I appreciate it a ton.
I watch you all the way in Australia and I love how you show us how to style our hair. I have just had a bob cut, after having long hair most of my life, and I need to know how to style it, thank you, thank you, please keep showing us and ignore the nay sayers, there will always be nay sayers. I am so grateful I found your TH-cam channel! ❤
I’m a retired hairstylist and honestly I would have LOVED having you as a resource when I was a stylist. No two stylist are exactly the same and everyone’s technique is slightly different. We were always learning by watching other stylist in the salon. Haters are gonna hate and you can never please them, so go on about your day. ❤
Where have you been all my life?! So glad I found you. Finally a professional that cares to TEACH us, the client, how to actually style at home. I learned so much in this video. The rationale of why you blow dry down the shaft explains why my hair gets frizzy…and learning how to communicate to my stylist is invaluable. Thank you for what you do. This info will NEVER replace the need for our beloved stylists once a month. It just will help us enjoy the work of the stylist more until next appt.
Please, please, please continue to show me how to fix my hair myself! Even if I spend a fortune at a hairdresser’s, if I don’t know how to get the look at home, it’s not going to look good. When you video the process, I can go back again and again until I get the results I like. I don’t “get” it fast enough at the hairdresser’s to recreate it.
I love your videos. You're teaching people how to style their hair on a daily basis. Nobody goes to the salon every morning for that. Thank you so much ❤.
Being upset about a stylish teaching us tips about our hair is absolutely ridiculous. Every stylist should want a well-informed customer, in the end, it's a win-win. You're always going to get these types so my advice, you do you! Thank you for every video you put out, I've learned so many great tips on how to keep my hair healthy. ❤
My hairdresser has asked me to send videos like yours before my appointment. She told me videos like yours help her to improve her technique when cutting hair. Because she already has training, she is able to implement your techniques and get a great cut. It’s also great to watch how you instruct the client how to style at home. My hairdresser does take time to show me how to style at home, but with her limited time, she can’t take 20 minutes to do step-by-step instructions. I’ve watched several of your videos and find them very helpful to learn to style at home. I think most women (at least) would love to be able to share one of your videos with their hairstylist instead of trying to explain exactly what they want and coming out of their appointment frustrated that they didn’t get the cut they wanted because of miscommunication. I know my stylist greatly appreciated when I shared a video with her on how I wanted my hair cut😊
Ultimately we are the ones that have to fix our hair. Why you do what you do is the whole point of me watching the videos at all. Thank you for sharing your tutorials. 🙌🏻
I love that you explained how to style the hair. I’ve had my hair cut so many times in so many different styles and I leave the salon and I can’t re-create the look. You teaching me does not mean I’m never going back to my hair stylist. It means I get to enjoy my hair style in between cuts. Thank you!
As a cosmetologist myself over 30 years, I appreciate the opportunity always for continuing education that you and some of the other professionals provide in your content. I have picked up a few helpful tips along the way. As far as it hurting the industry, 1, not a lot of people attempt to do their own hair cuts at home ( at least ones I know) and 2., a lot of what I learned in hair school was for the license exam. The really useful practical experience I got was on the salon floor after I finished school.
Please don’t stop your teaching. It does help me discuss my wants and needs with my stylist. Plus my stylist doesn’t teach me how to style at home so I rarely can get the salon look at home.
Justin, I’m all in favor of how you really get into explaining the complexity of a good haircut and tricks to styling. Honestly, it makes me appreciate stylists work even more because it’s more complicated than I thought.
If a stylist is threatened by your informative videos and is losing clients, how great of a stylist can they be? I love and appreciate your willingness to share, try to learn some styling techniques but certainly will not stop having my hair done by a professional! And more power to you if you are making money from the videos. That's what America is about.
They are just insecure with themselves and maybe their skills as a hairdresser. I would say ignore it, I love your videos and they are very helpful. You put a lot of work into them and you should benefit from the rewards of that. Keep them coming!
I have zero professional training! I LOVE knowing the tech info behind how and why a stylist does certain things to my hair. Bravo to you!!! Anyone who thinks what you’re doing is wrong is insecure and probably not very successful. I’d love every professional in my life to be as informative, helpful, and open as you are!! Thank you!!!
I LOVE that you instruct and explain how to style hair. So many times we don’t know how to get the results we want which could be a simple fix with how to hold the wrist or the dryer. Thank you so much!!
Thank you! I'm so glad to hear it helps! I was pretty surprised when an instructor commented that I'm not being ethical because I educate clients. Seems crazy to me !
You are not off base. You are making information available to thousands of people who would otherwise have no access to this information. This is making a positive difference in the world. Way to go!
Ok, you wanted my opinion.... I find your instructions perfect with detail so that I can speak to my hairdresser, and we get the perfect cut every time. Here in Nashville, I found a great stylist who talks with me about the best cut and style for my LIFE! I would not know the language on how to express that without you! Thank you! (Don't let one person build hate, when you are sharing knowledge and helping so many!)
I so enjoy hearing what you do with your clients hair! I’m not going to go get the scissors or stop going to my stylist. It is just having a better understanding of what they do and why they do it!
Absolutely not off base. Your education to your community is worth so much. You teach us how to ask for what we want, and how to care for our hair. I shared your video with my stylist and she was appreciative. It helped her understand exactly what I wanted. She actually said you both are adorable.
I think what you provide is valuable and not off base at all. I used to have a stylist who would turn my back to the mirror while she styled my hair so she could turn me around and give me the wow effect when it was finished. I explained to her that that didn't teach me how to give myself the same style at home in-between salon visits. What you do is far better and much appreciated. Thank you. Ignore the haters!
Insecure with their abilities as stylist. They don’t want their clients to have knowledge of what may work best for them. They seem to forget that they are there to provide a paid service to clients. I’m glad you’re not just giving a “haircut“, you’re educating them, because not all heads of hair are the same. I have learned so much from you.❤
The reason I watch you is BECAUSE OF YOUR TEACHING! I have used your instructions and tip and improved my technique. Please ignore that and continue to teach us how and why. Thanks for being a great teacher!
I love that you talk about your techniques, I don't suddenly say, "wow, I can do this myself ". It helps me better communicate with my stylist. Also, I always have frizz when I settle my hair and now I know why😮 thank you for explaining this
I love these videos. I’m not a hair stylist, I’m a client and I’ve always had thick long curly hair. You are very good at explaining the style process.I think that clients need to learn how to style their own hair but most don’t take the time to style it every day. You are helping everyone because it’s so much easier to explain what I want to my stylist when I use your video as a reference. So helpful. ❤ I don’t feel that you are taking business away from salons by teaching everyone these techniques, I think you are encouraging good communication which creates harmony at the salon. ❤
I'm not ashamed to say I'm a nerd. I LOVE learning... about almost anything. I very much like the technical info you give. I worry about a professional seeking to hide what they do from their customers.
Hahaha. You explaining the process, and helping me understand better how to style my hair and/or better communicate with my own stylist…does not mean that I’m gonna stop going to a hairdresser to get my hair cut and/or colored. Although I have always done a majority of my upkeep coloring anyway (long before YT, or even the internet) was invented…as my stylist is well aware..and she & I both know I do a great job, and truly can’t be running in for root touch ups constantly (I have fast growing gray hair). I do have her do the occasional cleanup/reboot of my color, and/or highlights, etc…, but I’m literally NEVER cutting my own hair. So glad you’re not scared to share. Love your videos, content & style…keep them coming!
Strong opinion alert. Any professional cosmetologist who does want an informed client is not a professional confident in their skill set. Keep up the how to information for your TH-cam community. I love the information you provide. Thank you!
Justin, You are giving a gift! I was a hair stylist decades ago and would have benefitted greatly from your videos. You are sharing your expertise at no cost to your viewers. That is sheer generosity! I believe your videos are a win-win for both client and stylist. It baffles me that you are receiving negativity. BTW: I have never written a comment on any platform, but truly want to support you. Renee
Justin! I love that you explain the how and why behind the scene. None of us at 60+ got instructions of how to blow and flat iron our hair to get the same results as a salon! I want to see more with different cuts. Please don’t stop helping us understand…. Thanks- Deb
Speaking as a client who wants to be educated about the best way to explain my haircut/style preferences to my stylist, I appreciate all of the education that your channel provides. Many times the words that make sense to me, perhaps do not translate in stylist terms, so it helps to watch and listen to the tips that you offer to better communicate what I want. I also tend to get the 'sausage roll' at the ends of my bob/sides and learned from this video that its likely how I'm holding my wrist that is causing the issue. Going to keep this in mind when using my flat iron in the future.
I love the education I get from your videos. It helps me to better understand what to ask for from my stylist and how to better style my hair at home. This in no way hurts my stylist. I'm not sure what that person was complaining to you about. You are helping many people with your videos and I appreciate you. Thank you!
Thank you! I appreciate you! Yeah, it seemed so crazy to me to think that an actual cosmetology instructor would say I’m being unethical by educating clients why we do what we do and how we do what we do so that they can get better results.
I feel that educating your client makes them a better communicator. They go home and work with the knowledge you have given. When they come back for a trim, a major cut or color , they can say what worked and what doesn't. I also believe that by educating, the client is willing to take more risks when trusting the stylist. I have naturally curly hair and did not have any idea how to work with it until I was 43. I had been to very expensive stylists over the years in NYC and would leave loving the doo but hated when I couldn't replicate it. It's one of the reasons we jump from one stylist to the next. Communication is key! Thank you for what you share.
I have a lot of hair & when I lost a good portion of my hair after the virus I was looking for answers. Part of my search was how can I style my hair to look fuller because this was now new to me & that’s how I found you…so grateful because it made me feel better learning how to. Your tips are deeply appreciated!! My hair all grew back & now I want a bob again 😊
Yo también soy peluquera jubilada! Y adoro y aprecio tu generosidad.Bravo !! Continua haciendo este tipo de video, se aprende muchísimo contigo gracias Agustín eres genial.
Justin, You can give ten people one recipe and it will come out ten different ways! It's not the knowledge that is so valuable. It's the ability to implement! And from what I see watching you, yours is a gift that you have honored and grown! The real value is in teaching the client to better care for their hair! I LOVE that you INFORM us! Really, it is a beautiful tribute to the stylist when we can apply what you've given us (the style and the tools) and go out in the world looking fabulous! I've always know that if I want a good hair dresser to find the individual whose hair looks fabulous! THANK YOU! ~Debra
As for the comments from the hairstylist......they are forgetting that we fix our hair 99.9% of the time at home. Of course we need to know how to style our own hair correctly. The more educated we are at taking care of our own hair the healthier it will be. Isn't that the goal? We will always go to our hairdressers for haircuts. We appreciate you teaching those of us that want to learn.
Justin, you don't give out too much education! It's useful info for us, the clients, but most of us want a professional to teach us how to manage our fabulous cut. I think your educator/commentary is feeling that we are all gonna cut and style our own hair forever and leave him/you flapping in the wind! An informed client is a continued client.
This is excellent! Now I know how to treat my cowlick. Your instructions do not hurt stylists. It enables people to better communicate with their stylists and learn how to better style their hair at home. If people feel more comfortable with styling their own hair, they might be more daring with the cuts they get, and then might go to their stylist even more. Keep doing what you are doing!!!
I personally am infatuated with hair and have been since I was 14 years old, I'm now 53. I have always coloured my own hair, trimmed it and also cut my family's hair, not always very well I might add but I love to give it a go. I'm not trained in any way to do hairdressing and do not wish to have a career in hairdressing, however I will never stop experimenting with cutting and colouring hair. So, it's people like you that I am truly very grateful for ♥️. The reality is that there will always be people like me who like to do their own hair or others hair, without needing a diploma to do so. The Tips and tricks that you provide are priceless and provide us with a better understanding of the World of Hair. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. The hairdresser who commented negatively perhaps has a lack of confidence in their own skills and therefore feels a little threatened, they may not be as good as they wish to be? I believe that professional hairdressers will never be out of business if they are good enough and don't overcharge. Please keep doing what you are doing and listen to the majority of comments as they are the true voice ✂️✂️✂️
I LOVE that you get technical! It shows us non-stylists the "why and how-to" so much better than just a video showing how a pro like you can get the right look 👍 Admittedly as a DIYer for my very fine/thin hair, I've learned SO much from watching your videos... I've yet to find a stylist who truly has given me a good cut/style. They 'say' they can work with my hair type and then I walk out with a horrible cut for hair that grows so slowly I'm relegated to hat-wearing! Ugh! YES yes yes! Keep doing your videos with all that info. I think it's the cosmetologists who are insecure who dislike you giving away "trade secrets" IMO. And P.S. I love your sense of humor! 🥰
Thank you so much for this! It sincerely means a lot. I am so happy to hear that I can help in anyway! And I totally agree, every strong and secure stylist I’ve ever met, has been more than willing to give away any secrets they have because they fully recognize their value. I also believe that that is a large part of the reason they are so successful. What seemed crazy to me was that a cosmetology instructor could say that I’m being unethical by teaching clients why we do what we do so that they can get better results. To me it’s unethical to hide things from your client That could impede them from getting the best results.
I love the session today where you’re actually teaching the client how to take care of her own haircut to get the desired results. I too will never quit going to my hairstylist. Watching your sessions convinces me that my hairstylist really knows what she’s doing because she’s doing most of what I see you doing. I want her to teach me how to style my own haircut.
No matter what “a client” does on their own, the end result is never going to be the same as when a professional does it. Technique and products are a percentage, but for me personally, it’s the much needed & loved self care of going to a stylist. Also, my stylist appreciates when her clients know what they’re doing because she doesn’t have to constantly be fixing screw-ups! You’re great, keep doing you and helping people be there very best! 💜
I have thick wavy hair and I'm in my early 50s. My style of choice for the last decade is various length bobs. I am So happy to have discovered your videos. I have never had a stylist instruct me like you do. Please don't stop educating us.
Justin! You keep doing what you are doing. Don't stop being you and using your heart to share. 1. I can help my hairstylist know about what I want, not just saying "I'll let you do what YOU think I need" - been there, done that and never completely happy. 2. I can help keep my hair styled and healthy IN BETWEEN my appointments, so I continue being happy with my hair. 3. I may need to make some minor trim to my fringe area that I don't need to pay or take the time at the salon for. So may I say, THANK YOU!!!! My stylist has me returning without missing a beat.
Thank you so much! This truly means a ton to me! I’m so happy to hear that I can help in this way. You’re awesome and I always appreciate your support!
I am a stylist. I also explain to my clients. This is a gift to the client. When they have a better understanding of the process they are better able to recreated the “look” on a daily basis. This has created a large client base for me as well as providing great resources of referrals. Keep doing what you’re doing. You make a difference, and you are raising the bar !
I think you are absolutely amazimg! Your information is sooooo helpful. Our stylist don't take the time to walk us through the how to's and it is so nice to have someone to explaim everything from blow drying, creating volume, products and so much more. Also amazing to see the different cuts and styles to learn from and consider. Please don't stop doing what is so helpful to most of us! ❤
You’re the best instructor on how to work with our individual styles and hair textures, naturally we, who choose to watch, will need our local stylists to maintain an optimal style! ❤ Thankyou Justin, I value my 61 year old full head of hair and appreciate all the advice on keeping it healthy and beautiful 🌟
I am very grateful that you teach us how to style our hair. It always makes me very disappointed when I get a great cut and style at the salon, and the next day, my hair doesn't look as good as it did in the salon.
We rely on our stylist to give us a cut so we can achieve these results at home. Many don’t have the time to teach us the blowout in the detail you do. If they’re criticizing you for doing so, it’s their insecurity and resentment of time constraints imposed on them. I am very appreciative of your instructions - they have helped me and my bob a lot! Thank you!
I in no way plan to stop going to a stylist. Your videos help me style my hair and communicate issues with my stylist that I am having when I try to style my hair at home. I think, if anything, individuals complaining that you are sharing "secrets" are most likely not very good stylist and now clients are realizing they're not and choosing to go elsewhere. Talent and technique keep clients coming back, not "hair secrets".
lmaoooo. I watch SO many technical hair videos on TH-cam but I still go back to my hair stylist when I want a cut or bleach. I've mastered my semi-perm colour at home and my stylist encourages me to do it. She knows it's costly to come to her for it since semi-perm fades out so quick and I'm dedicated to keeping it bright. She says she loves it because I take such good care of it so it helps her work last longer out in the world too. Teaching people how on TH-cam is not as demonic as this person is making it out to be. I still do and always will go back to my stylist. Videos like this just help in between when I don't want to bug my stylist but also want to learn a new way to style my hair or "troubleshoot" a problem I'm having with it.
Thank you! That's exactly what I thought! I was so shocked to hear an educator say what I do is unethical! I think it's unethical to NOT be honest with your clients and help them get the best results for them, regardless of how they get them.
@@justinhickox I don’t even have a bob; I have hair down to my waist but been thinking about cutting it. This gave me an idea of what I’d be in for with shorter hair. Helped me to make the decision that a bob is too short for me, so thank you!!! At least I can show up to my stylist with a decision and direction in my head now. Your videos help clients make confident choices.
PLEASE DO NOT STOP GIVING HAIR TUTORIALS! You are the 1st stylist to explain how and why you do things, and the consequences of not doing them. I’ve never really had to style my hair before, it was very long and curly. But after losing my soul mate 4 years ago, I chopped it all off and now it’s right at chin level. Now I have to style my hair or I look ridiculous. I do not know what to do, how to do it, or anything. You’re the 1st to explain it to where I can do it myself.(sometimes) I consider myself fairly talented or skilled in a lot of things. Styling hair is def not one of them! So THANK YOU SO MUCH AND PLEASE CONTINUE TO DO TUTORIALS!!
Sounds like some insecurity with the commenter. Your instruction has taught me what to discuss with my stylist. She always listens and appreciates - knowing I will be a happy client. Knowing what and how to communicate is key. Please keep your format.
That’s awesome! I have found that confident hairstylist are also open to learning and sharing everything that they know because they recognize their talent and value they bring.
As a hairstylist for almost 20 years now, I absolutely love that you are educating clients!!! It makes it so much easier to communicate with my client if they can be specific about what their expectations are. If hairstylists are upset that you are helping clients understand the more technical aspects of the process, well either they are not good stylists and they don’t know how to execute the style correctly, or they are attaching their self worth or identity to some kind of pedestal worthy knowledge- like they’re better than the clients because they know how to cut/color/style hair? Perhaps it’s a THEM problem, not a YOU problem. I adore you and your content 💜💜💜
You are not off base at all and I’m afraid this is probably a beautician who doesn’t listen to her clients. I run into this a lot, and I've gone through a lot of hairstylist because they will not communicate with me. You show a picture. Tell them what you want in detail. They shake their head with no discussion about your hair type and lifestyle and then do what they want. One of the main reasons I watch your videos to get more education so that I can talk to the beautician and we are on the same page. I'm not trying to tell the beautician how to do their job which some of them interpret it as that. Believe me at 60 with thinning gray hair it has been very hard to find a beautician who will work with me
Thank you! And this is exactly why I create videos! I’ve always thought, it’s not about telling hairstylists what to do, it’s about explaining to clients why we do what we do and how we do what we do so that you can get better results with your hair. It seemed so crazy to me to hear a cosmetology instructor tell me I was not being ethical by Teaching clients what we do.
I like that you are teaching people how to use the products and tools to achieve their desired look at home. Knowledge leads to successful/desired outcomes. Keep doing you and what makes you happy. You cant please everyone.
the cosmetologist that doesn't like you teaching us is being short sighted and self centered. I cannot go to a hairdresser every week to do my hair so It's good to be able to do it at home. Chef's teach us how to cook because we cannot go to a restaurant every night. jeesh
I would definitely follow a stylist who helps with understanding the needs of the client, that's how you build a relationship and customer supported services. Really good tips.
Justin, as a client I appreciate that you educate your clients and us followers and that would not make you lose me as a client but gain my respect and trust and I would be recommending others to you for that very reason. I am not surprised that your clientele increased and your followers and I hope to find a stylist like you one day, oh that would be the dream! Thank you again, Justin, you are the dream hair stylist we all want to have in our neighborhood!
Don’t stop the videos!! One of the most frustrating things about getting a new hairstyle is that the hairdresser can do it well but it is harder for us to achieve at home. I would never stop going to my hairdresser because of your videos- they just help me understand how hair works! Love it ❤️❤️❤️
I love learning how to fix my bob and get more volume. You're not hurting the industry we still need our hairdresser but we cant count on them to do our hair ever single day and who doesn't want to look good every single day? I sure do. Thank you for the tips and tricks I've learned a lot from watching you.
I love what you teach… the how and why. It’s how my brain learns. I am 46 years old and I feel like i actually understand how to get that salon style on my my hair for the first time in my life. I can’t think of anything more professional than that. The commenting by the other stylist criticizing you is gatekeeping important information to look your best, and be confident in your appearance every day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Can’t wait to try it out.
Don't change anything, your information is so valuable to any client. We do want to know what is going on and the questions we need to ask to get the look we want. Very much appreciate the technical aspects of cuts and styling, thanks so much!
As a hair client, I think the more knowledge I have about the whys, how’s of hair, the better. Can’t understand why anyone would think otherwise. Keep up what you do here with your educational videos. Your content and teaching ability for us not in the profession is well organized and just makes me appreciate your profession even more. So, in my opinion, you definitely not “off base”. Thank you!😊
As another poster said, just because you give such great instruction on now to style and work with various hairstyles and types certainly doesn't mean I will stop going to a salon. Not every stylist takes the time to SHOW you how to dry and style your hair. I really appreciate your videos and find them extremely helpful❤
I just had my long hair cut into a bob and with all this recent humidity it has been a nightmare! I am extremely grateful to you for sharing all of these tips as it has been a hair saver for me ❤. To be honest, I have never had a hair stylist take the time to show me how to care for my style when at home so I am thankful to you for sharing this with us 😊
I love how you asked your client to demonstrate how she styles her hair at home, it’s a great way of learning as a client on how to do it right! As a client I just go home I figure out on my on! Thea I you for your videos, this is my second video of your that I watched.
I love that you teach the language of cosmology and you demonstrate how to use to each step to get the results. It helps me explain to my hairstylist in her language what I want when she cuts my hair. I'm an accountant I don't know cosmetology. Having you show the techniques and explain them is a Godsend!
So many people have commented (albeit positively) that they won't quit going to their stylist. As someone who hasn't had a professional cut for 12 years; finances simply dont permit it...(& then only for my daughters wedding), this channel is invaluable. Thank you so much. Don't have word enough to express my gratitude ❤
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the comment at the end of the video! What do you think?

One of my pet peeves regarding hair stylists is, once they have cut and styled your hair, they turn you out of the chair without any instruction on how to style at home.
So, naturally, I go online and find you...someone who is more than happy to put in the extra hours creating content so clients of OTHER stylists can learn how to style the cut.
I appreciate you and Dionne for all of the extra hours you put into to these videos. It must be like having two full time jobs!
Just keep on keeping on...spreading knowledge and most of all JOY
❤
@@KayKell1215 I literally couldn’t agree more!
Totally agree with this comment.
I agree. I am not ever going to a salon unless it's for a color and cut. I would never go just for a styling, so no one is losing and business.
I find your videos are helping me doing a better job at setting my hair
Very helpful and appreciated
Wow, thanks Cheryl for the kind words! I will let Dionna know you inspired her
Knowledge is power which equates into confidence.
I couldn't agree more! Thank you for this amazing support. I can tell you're a solid professional. I appreciate you.
Thanks Anne for your support!
As a retired stylist I always taught my clients how to style their hair. That's what good stylist do and the client will trust you more when you take the time to show them how to. Great video.
Exactly!
Your videos have transformed the way I style my hair and crucially what I discuss with my stylist. Fabulous videos - ignore any negativity. The number of subscribers you have speaks for itself. Thank you 🎉
Thank you! I'm so glad I can help. I like to check in at times to make sure I'm not off base on things. Glad to hear I'm still on track!
Another great informative video thank you Justin.Wish I could send a photo for how you might style and color my hair?Marlene
It’s so great you make her do it herself! We learn even more through you coaching her, not just showing your perfect techniques. Genius!!!
Justin, as per comments at end, you’ve taught the public how to care for hair properly in between our visits to our favorite stylist. We don’t have a glam squad on a payroll doing it for us every day. You teach us to protect and care properly for our hair daily so our stylist can enhance our best selves.
Thank you so much for this! I sincerely appreciate it! That’s always been my goal, and it feels so good to know that it’s hitting the mark!
💯 it so frustrating to leave the salon loving the style & not be able to achieve anything close. Justin, keep doing what you’re doing.
Thank you for always promoting the stylist! That's huge for us.
Just watched this and it was sooo helpful
the person responding to you in such a negative way is actually reflecting their own insecurities. It's nothing about you and all about them. Ignore it. I'm personally very grateful for your videos.
Thanks Nancy for seeing beyond that - I appreciate your support!
Good video to help clients understand how to style at home ..perfect video
I think I would only get a bob if I could have access to your services 😂 ❤
Now that's a good stylist! You really can't please everyone. Thank you so much for your support, Cathy!
Thank you so much! This has always been my purpose for my channel and I’m so happy to hear that it’s working! I appreciate your feedback, a ton!
Me too!!
I love your videos. You're teaching people how to style their hair on a daily basis. Nobody goes to the salon every morning for that. Thank you so much ❤.
Your videos have CAUSED me to actually GO TO a stylist regularly ...for the FIRST TIME in 35+ years!!! AND, I finally got a cut I love!!!
Wow, congrats! That's a good feeling.
This is amazing!!! I’m so happy for you!!
That's great to hear. Love that your stylist is always learning and open - that's awesome. Thank you for watching!
Ultimately we are the ones that have to fix our hair. Why you do what you do is the whole point of me watching the videos at all. Thank you for sharing your tutorials. 🙌🏻
I appreciate the details you provide not only on cutting but styling. Please don’t let the negative comments change what you do.
Thank you for your support Dawn. All the negativity is overshadowed by comments like yours
Totally agree, thanks for watching!
Please do not stop educating us. I so appreciate your conversations and would be very upset if you stopped.
Please don’t stop your teaching. It does help me discuss my wants and needs with my stylist. Plus my stylist doesn’t teach me how to style at home so I rarely can get the salon look at home.
I will not stop teaching, or learning. I'm glad my content has helped you in some way. Thank you for your sweet message.
Social media has changed how business is done. You're simply branching out and helping others on the way. Seems like a win-win to me.
They are just insecure with themselves and maybe their skills as a hairdresser. I would say ignore it, I love your videos and they are very helpful. You put a lot of work into them and you should benefit from the rewards of that. Keep them coming!
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate that and it feels good to know I'm not off base!
Has nothing to do with insecurity...just not willing to patronize...🤔
Justin is fantastic at hair.❤
I have zero professional training! I LOVE knowing the tech info behind how and why a stylist does certain things to my hair. Bravo to you!!! Anyone who thinks what you’re doing is wrong is insecure and probably not very successful. I’d love every professional in my life to be as informative, helpful, and open as you are!! Thank you!!!
Just my words. ❤
I'm so glad that I can help! Great that you've found a great stylist in Nashville for life, that's a good feeling, huh?
@@justinhickox Very good feeling, now to find one in Miami as a move is happening soon for work. Thank you for sharing so much with us.
Aw, thank you for your support.
I love the fact that you explain what you're doing and why. Educating people is a gift, you do it well, please don't stop.
Haters have been ignored! Thanks Heidi for your sweet words. I appreciate you!
Don’t change a thing, Justin! I learn so much from your videos and I enjoy your enthusiasm and energy!
Insecure with their abilities as stylist. They don’t want their clients to have knowledge of what may work best for them. They seem to forget that they are there to provide a paid service to clients. I’m glad you’re not just giving a “haircut“, you’re educating them, because not all heads of hair are the same. I have learned so much from you.❤
Everyone (including me) is learning all the time
The reason I watch you is BECAUSE OF YOUR TEACHING! I have used your instructions and tip and improved my technique.
Please ignore that and continue to teach us how and why. Thanks for being a great teacher!
I love that you talk about your techniques, I don't suddenly say, "wow, I can do this myself ". It helps me better communicate with my stylist. Also, I always have frizz when I settle my hair and now I know why😮 thank you for explaining this
Happy that you've figured out the frizz! Thank you for your support.
I know, right? We are all learning, all the time. Thank you for your support - I'm a nerd too!
Thank you!
Thank you for your strong opinion - I appreciate you!
Justin,
You are giving a gift!
Thanks- Deb
I won't stop Deb, I promise! Thank you so much for your support.
Thank you for your kind words. Sounds like a bob is in your future!
Yo también soy peluquera jubilada! Y adoro y aprecio tu generosidad.Bravo !! Continua haciendo este tipo de video, se aprende muchísimo contigo gracias Agustín eres genial.
I watch your videos BECAUSE you tell us what is going on behind the chair. I appreciate the education. Please keep them coming!
I love the teaching/styling tips you share! I love how you show us techniques .
I love your tutorials. If only you lived in my state. It's hard to find a good stylist who knows how to cut and style all types of hair.
Thank you so much! I’m so happy to hear that I could help! I sincerely appreciate the kind words!
IMO, a stylist that is offended by their clients educating themselves is greedy and full of ego. I would never return to someone with that opinion.
I’m not seeing that! Learning a lot from him….
@@kathynewkirk683 He asked for opinions about stylists who have commented that way.
You’re the first hairstylist I have ever heard explain how to manage a Calic.
You're talking about the 'cowlick' right?
You’re the best instructor on how to work with our individual styles and hair textures, naturally we, who choose to watch, will need our local stylists to maintain an optimal style! ❤ Thankyou Justin, I value my 61 year old full head of hair and appreciate all the advice on keeping it healthy and beautiful 🌟
I am very grateful that you teach us how to style our hair. It always makes me very disappointed when I get a great cut and style at the salon, and the next day, my hair doesn't look as good as it did in the salon.
Yes, that is frustrating, but I will keep these videos coming
We rely on our stylist to give us a cut so we can achieve these results at home. Many don’t have the time to teach us the blowout in the detail you do. If they’re criticizing you for doing so, it’s their insecurity and resentment of time constraints imposed on them. I am very appreciative of your instructions - they have helped me and my bob a lot! Thank you!
I think it’s great that you are providing education for us to pass on to our stylist
Thank you! That’s how I think about it as well which is why the comment was so confusing! I appreciate your feedback.
