In this episode of Restore It, I pretty much finish the welding on the Mercedes W123. The two areas I work on are the bottom right and bottom left of the front windscreen. Both of which turned out to be way worse than I thought and both took way longer than planned.

It turns out Great. You said your welds dont look good. Try this: increase the voltage on the welder just a little and Instead of just weld a dot, try to do a little longer weld. About 2-3 mm. The weld will sink in little more and will be less of grinding. Practise make knowledge. Sorry for some bad english. Greetings from sweden. 😊

Either a longer time or a higher voltage, the secret to welding on thin section metal is the balance of heat (voltage) and time. My timing is “one thousand and.. ”. I set the voltage so that if I say “..two” I burn through. But hey you are doing great. I work on W124s and they tend to rust in interesting areas too.

Fascinating to watch rust repair. I am restoring a 1993 Toyota MR2 with zero rust, so all my work is mechanical and cosmetic in nature. Just lucky!
I give you a lot of credit for challenging yourself, especially on a customer car. That definitely ups the stakes and ensures that you push yourself to deliver the best possible result. Professionals start somewhere, and I think you’re well passed the beginner stage. Bang up job!!
It’s not until doing this work yourself that you realize how unbelievably difficult it is. I don’t know how much money is in your swear jar, but I could be close to retiring on mine with a fraction of the work you’ve done.
Absolutely, I only did a small metal work on my MX-5 but from now on I will happily pay a professional because there is no way I will do that again.
I was a mechanic in the army - dealing with this crap and patching fiberglass humvee bonnets was the shittiest of the shitty shit in the shitter

Great episode @Restore It ! At the 10:43 I was rolling on the floor laughing, very funny comment. This is the first episode I can remember you calling yourself by name, too. Steve, you make great entertaining content and your attention to detail is exemplary. Despite calling yourself an amateur I think you always do fantastic work. Especially with this underlying rust bucket, you've really made it restored to former glory and I hope the owner really appreciates ($$$$$$) the real effort you've put into making it look the best you can. I remember your first forays into welding. You might have a way to go, but you've already come very, very far. This cars going to look great by the time you're done.
I hope the customer really appreciates all the extra work you're putting into this car. It should've gone to the scrap heap, but thanks to your persistence and attention to detail it'll end up like new once he gets it back. Hopefully you don't end up with more future projects like this, or put in a clause that any rust repair beyond what the customer states will be charged at shop rate at the customer's discretion. Doing great work!

Mate, I feel you... I am restoring my Datsun 240Z. That thing is just a bag of rust on wheels. And I started welding around the same time as you did on your videos, but your learning curve got MUCH higher than mine! I think you're doing great. And who cares about your high welds... It's welded, and then you grind it. It's not structural, so you'll be fine!
And I remember your welds in your first videos. You really improved to a great level!
I'm became pretty careful with residual rust, so, personally, I would cut further than you do (in the areas where it's pitted). But maybe I am just too cautious...
Is your rust converter acid phosphoric based? This acid chimically eats the iron oxid without touching the good iron. It's the only product that ACTUALLY removes & converts the rust, and don't just insulate it from oxygen. Be careful with that. Lots of rust converter are junk

Good Job! Don't worry about how long it takes you right now. With more practice it will get faster and easier. Check with your paint guy regarding the rust converter. I have seen new paint come off down to bare metal in some cases after using a rust converter. It can happen very soon or in several years. My buddy who has done some car painting and restoration would epoxy prime over the metal and not rust convert? My old 83 300D is still in service and has over 430K miles on the clock. You probably could have found a car without the rust problems in the South West USA but the interior would not have been as nice as your car! That interior is very nice! I hope you can find all the parts you need! Some items are very difficult to source and even if you can find it the quality of Chinesium parts can be very poor.

Great work. You say you'll strip it and get ready for paint in the next episode. Based on previous form, I guess you'll discover additional rust when you strip it, and will spend several episodes reworking that before you're ready for paint. OK, prove me wrong !!
I have a 124. they are great cars. its good to see someone do this to a car most would say isnt worth it. and maybe it isnt if you have a shop do it. but doing it yourself is always a good idea even if it doesnt work out so well. it looks to me like this will work just fine for you. if you happen to be able to get a tig welding machine, that may help you have more faith in your welding ability. even though you are doing fine. its just fine if you put down a solid weld and dont have to get out the torch and a shrinking hammer

I've been welding alot on my 1978 dodge aspen lately, I don't find it very hard to shape and weld the metal but I've set the car on fire twice! :o I'm a professional welder but working on cars (safe) is quite a challenge sometimes!

I found with working on cars like this that I ended up spending a lot of time undoing other people's crap work. It's why if I ever get another project car, I'd go for something that hadn't been messed with already (if possible).
I think you definatley have to upgrade yourself to gifted amature at least ... Grand job ya did
