Hey Mike, I have a question and an observation.
Question: how do you determine what size boards you'll cut? Obviously the log determines the max size, but how do you decide how many of each and what size they'll be? It may be because we're only seeing bits and pieces, but it seems like you're cutting non standard sizes. If so, why? Just curious.
Observation: that conveyor is pretty cool, but it seems like it's not grabbing the logs effectively enough to keep the hopper from backing up. Every time I watch it, I can't help but feel like it would benefit from some kind of feed roller or at least higher sides on the hopper and maybe splitter table. Thoughts?

I am going to say I'm not sold 100% on the handling system of the firewood after its split. It drives me crazy watching that big of a build up at the end of the splitting tray. I think I would be investigating a way to drop the end of the tray filling the collecting area of the conveyor. Maybe also a few inches higher on the sidewalls of the split collecting tray area. My other initial thought is a sort of tooth on the horizontal bars in the conveyor chain. The split wood with weight collecting on top of all the split wood seems to ride over top of the smooth bar. Give that bar some teeth to grab the wood and carry it up the conveyor. I'm not downing you or your your wife or your family or going to stop watching you because your anal about stacking your milled lumber, I'm just offering an observation. But on the other side you'll probably not respond to this anymore than you have on other comments I've made. Have fun with buckin stock

Hey Mike, got an idea for cleaning up the sawdust.
It may or may not work, but if you hang a bucket under the Wood Mizer to catch most of the sawdust, then park your little red tandem axle trailer close by dump the bucket in the trailer. Then afterwards see if your customers would like Sawdust or sell it. Just an idea and passing it on to you...

Melissa and Mike, on a personal note...I'm stuck in the mud with the case of the ole crud ! I've been out of work for two days, stuck inside going on four and every time I look out I wish man, wish I was out there doing something, even if it's nothing much but anything just to be outdoors with my Kubota. I'd be in my happy place but better days are coming. I'm finally getting rid of that demon inside. A mild case of the cold or something.
I always enjoy your videos and it gives me inspritation to get out there and be me. be creative and do something I love...being outdoors. I sure hope I kick this whatever I have or had in the bud. It's no fun being cooped up and not able to do dang near anything mostly out there.
You two have it together. That's the way it should be. you all are in my heart. Oh! Hunter, hope you are doing OK. Soon I'll have a chicken sandwich from my favorite place too Burger King an think about you Dude.
    God bless,
    Michael from NW North Carolina

Happy to see you all wearing gloves more often. Just good practice around split wood. Mike, maybe if you cranked the hitch stand up a little more on the splitter to tilt it more downward that wood would flow into the conveyor hopper better. Just an idea. Keep up the great videos and as always God Bless.

Mike, I heard the same thing that someday they’ll ban the burning of firewood I can’t see it too many people in rural areas use it to heat their home for the reasons you said availability and expensive and people just enjoy doing it don’t get me wrong if they ever come up with a really cool and affective way to heat our homes that we can all afford. I’m all for it but until then I’ll hit with firewood.

Use for saw dust, get a pellet maker, then sell hard wood pellets for pellet stoves, on stead of bags, core charge on drums, figure out how much weight a drum holds of pellets then calculate price!.
When planking a tree, unless you have a direct use for a certain dimensions of lumber, I would keep cuts at 9/4, just over 2 inches ruff cut, for sticking and drying. You can always recut into 5/4 on a simple cabinet saw.

Melissa. I suggest you look for a slighly large leather skirt. It would act as an all around apron, over your clothes, when dealing with raw cut lumber and other thorny field work. I don't know if you can find one, but one splinter in those lovely rear quarters is too many. I noticed these rounds were about as large as any Mike had in his trailer load. I hope you both have a very nice and safe trip this weekend. I hear from my trucker brother it is pretty country. In such company as Mke will have, the New Jersey Turnpike would seem like a scenic route. May God go with you. He has an eye for beauty, Heaven knows. (Or She as the Late Father Andrew Greeley, the author and priest. used to prefer. )

    Hi Mike,
Just thought I would let you know if you haven't thought about it yet. The IBC totes you are storing your firewood in will have a bunch of mice nests in them before winter. I tried doing this with pallets because I was tired of handling wood a bunch of time. I tried the Tom cat scents and mothballs, neither worked for me. I ended up up changing my tote design to a six foot tall 3x3 so I could just store inside my basement. I move them around with a pallet jack when time to feed the stove.
