    forget the rose tinted glasses - Rallying was just better then!! I had this recorded off the TV as a kid along with the Irish and the British rally championships and watched them on a loop - so nice to see this again! Little did I know at the time that I was watching 'peak rallying' during that ear where you had 90s Grp A cars, through to the F2 years and early 2000s WRC seasons - and at a time when the sport was the countys biggest spectator sporting event with end to end mainstream TV coverage....rallying can only dream of that now!
    it was a special time for the sport with that combo of legendary drivers, lots of manufacturers involved and special cars

    Had a recording of this on VHS years ago and it was my favourite thing to watch as a boy. Was 9 years old in 1993 and totally in love with the Escort Cosworth. I'm now 37 and still in love with that car, and this superb rally review. Thanks for posting, so good to watch it again.

    Great video! The coverage was so much better than the way they do WRC now, all flash and just too....”professional” and slick. Really good stuff! I love watching these old events, never got to see them in the day.

      Agree! The WRC highlights now have way too much chit chat going on. Just keep the footage flowing with commentary over the top. With WRC 2, WRC 3 and sometimes Junior they should have loads of footage to show rather than talking to manufacturers and the drivers every time

      @@ljsmalls5683 You beat me to that comment. And look at the size of the field 160 odd cars, some of the modern rounds struggle to get 30.
      Although the group B cars were very spectacular, I prefer the group A to WRC era more, 87 to 2001 was the golden age of rallying.

      @@hughcdavies That's just motorsport in general nowadays. Fields in pretty much every category sans GT3 are down. Sadly even though I love the current WRC (thank god they finally have proper cars after running S2000+ for more then half a decade) I can't imagine the new manufacturers coming in, nor the promotors some how finding a way to get legit privaters to run in the top flight. IDK the future looks pretty dim, especially with how R1 is shaping up.

    I lived in Rothbury back then, a friend of mine had a shop on Bridge Street and i used to pop in for a cuppa, one day we became aware of lots of nice cars (Deltas, Cossies etc) driving past, 2 onboard, one with a map, eventually the penny dropped and we realised it was the crews doing the recce for the road routes between stages, no cameras on phones back then so just lots of memories, happy days! 😁

    The Group A days of rallying were so much cooler, more interesting and more exciting than current day's WRC, with the Rally1 regulations the cars are just silhouette cars that sort of look like production cars instead of being heavily based on production cars.

    I well Remember the 6" Icicles hanging of the inside of my Astra GTE's Sunroof (Yes inside the Car) when we woke up on that 1st Welsh Moring lol. Had to sell the GTE as the Cylinder head suffered in the cold lol. The Coldest Welsh Night on Record then if I rember. Great Memoires! The Stages were litrally ice rinks with 1-2" Thick Ice. Amazing Driving lol. Grizdale was something else. In those days the Drivers had Female Groupies who travelled from accross the world and came into the forrests in Night Club Clothes and HEALS You had to be there to Belive it!! Not Totally Sure but this also may be the year that the snow banks in Broomylin were up to 6ft in places. 2WD Struggled a bit lol. Maybe not as that was the year all the 2WD got stuck on a stage late in the day in the dark. Great Memories.

    • @strahinjastevic7480

      The only reason they did so is becouse the only other outfit was m-sport (ford), a fairly young team. Toyota only came back full time in 98 and other than narrowly missing out on a drivers title the same year they got the manufacturers one in 99. Calling it domination is a bit of an overstatement.

      That was with the st205 the st165 and st185 didnt utilize that device nor were they able to hence all the titles won with them are still in place (1990, 1992, 1993, 1994)

    • @strahinjastevic7480
      @strahinjastevic7480 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the early st205 werent striped of any victories eather (becouse of them having the, st185's engine i think) You think the fia didnt check all of them? Infact they were under huge pressure from lancia who themselves standed to inherit those achievements and found it convinient toyota get caught with them in older cars but to their dissapointment they were legal.
