  • Customer brought to a shop and they wanted to replace parts that looks like it was leaking, but the real problem was that the timing chain tensioner gasket was leaking and spreading the oil all over underneath it. Make sure to get a second opinion and also inspect it yourself before agreeing to expensive repairs. We will follow up on this video with an update on the leaking oil area since we cleaned the area with brake clean after replacing the gaskets.

    Just finished replacing the timing chain tensioner on my 2002 Toyota Camry LE. I watched numerous videos before attempting this. After jacking up the car, and removing the front-right wheel, I tried to find it from underneath (as one video showed), but could not locate it. I then began on top, but still couldn't locate it. So I took a break, and watched your video again. Did exactly what you showed us, and found it, removed it, then replaced it with a new device. I took my time reconnecting everything, then rotated the engine clockwise and heard the noise. Such relief. Started the car, everything works. Your video is the only one, that I have found, that shows us how to remove parts to make the job so much easier. Thank you for your presentation.

    Sir, the tip at minute 8 to disconnect the harness box was worth gold. I was stuck at that point. Thank you for pointing this out. Other videos they don't bother, just show you the tensioner out and that is that. Well done.

    • @tomshiba51

      Absolutely, this video made me a little nervous because so much was removed to accomplish the little task, and I thought I would surely miss something and the car wouldn't start. But, it did. An easy job is only easy because of difficult preparation.

      Can anyone please provide more details on how they removed the harness retaining clamp on the side of the engine at the 8:15 mark? I ended up prying so hard that I ended up braking the plastic tab off ad bending the metal bracket out of the way. Oh well. Despite this though, I was unable move the clamp far enough away from the tensioner to get it out. Thanks for any help, or if someone can make a more detailed video showing how to do it or describe it as a response to this? Thanks.

    Ok for anyone looking for the specifics of how to release the tensioner once it is in, install it like he showed here with the hook over the stud remove the valve cover and get a long pick and a light. The service information says to turn the motor counter clockwise to put tension on the chain guide and allow you to pull the hook over. Obviously on this you go very little on the crankshaft on mine I heard a slight clunk and then I was able to move the hook. This is in a really crappy spot and the hook is barely visible but once the hook is free of the stud you slowly turn the motor the normal clockwise direction and you will hear the tensioner spring out to take up the slack (still going very slowly of course). Turning the crankshaft just clockwise will not release the tension on the hook since all of the tension will be on the other side of the chain pulling down on the intake cam from the crank sprocket. Hope this helps someone just go slow and make sure to get a very long pick tool probably close to 12".

    One of the best videos, no excess non related talking, to the point instructions and good well lit video. Coil pack plugs do not need to replace broken clips, they will never come loose.Thanks.

    Nicely done and very helpful. I am trying to get at a Chain Tensioner on a Toyota Estima Van and working space is horrible. I always appreciate seeing a little bit of discovery along the way. More like reality and makes me feel less idiotic.

      @@NutzAboutBolts I tried releasing the latch. My hands are too big to reach it. I ended up forcing the harness casing off the holding bar. Broke the latch. No big deal. It's still held in place by a bolt. I'm not too worried.
      BTW, I think oil can leak from the VVTi solenoid, above the chain tensioner. The o-ring on the solenoid is rock hard.

    • @NutzAboutBolts
      @NutzAboutBolts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Evanoff yes that’s possible too, but the common leak is from the tensioner.

      This is a little off topic but is there a way to tell if a 2.4L Camry has had the oil consumption fix done? There's a lot of them for sale but I don't want to get one that hasn't been fixed.

    It is a good practice to clean the engine with degreaser. This will help you to spot leaks easier after replacing the valve cover gasket.

      There’s a plastic tab on the back where you pull down to unlock it, then you pull the whole harness back to remove it from that gold retainer metal bracket. It was hard to film it because it is a tight space and you wouldn’t be able to see it because you have to feel it with your fingers when reaching down there. There’s way too many wires to try to fit a GoPro down there and it’s only hand tight space. That’s the best we could do and explain it while it was out. I hope that helps, if not, maybe someone commented about it in the comments on that issue.

(The cylindrical part with a plug going into it) And does that have an oil gasket as well? I'm trying to figure out if I still have a leak at the tensioner or if it's coming from that other part. Interesting, I've a ' 99 camry, thinking of getting an ' 05 camry if the price is right. The ' 99 is very simple and dependable, you can get a lot of bottom access by removing passengers side wheel and a plastic cover behind it. I'll have to look at the ' 05, it would help if it had that. I didn't care much for the valve cover here, the '99 has 4 nuts on spark plug tube, torque to 31 ft. lbs. I like to torque things to spec. and expect it to work. Interesting video, I'm SURE it's of value for those attempting this.
