  • We're in the midst of an interesting cultural shift in anime. The last few years have seen massive changes in how anime is made and how we watch it. In this video, I take a look into those changes to see where anime might be going in the future.

    The problem with digital anime is it looks too clean which makes it feel stiff or lifeless, the imperfections or so called textures of cel animation makes it feel more alive & also with the detailed shading, vivid color palettes & the rough line arts that a few animes have because of budget issues with rushed production time. Today's digital technology can replicate the looks of cel animation within a small amount of time, I really want to see a modern digital made anime look cel animated.

      I think you would appreciate works like Mob Psycho, Scissor Seven, Ping Pong the animation, Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, Megalo Box, Sonny Boy, Devil Man Crybaby, and maybe Great Pretender.

    The quality of animation has definitely improved significantly these past few years and even decade. Animators are making better use of movement, camera angles, and of course quality traits such as smoothness. This is sort of a tangent, but I believe anime just to be another way to tell a story. Animation is one such way to tell a story, and new experimental methods of animating adds a lot not just for enjoyment but also enhancing a story. After all, those little details could be explained for paragraphs in a book, and not even to the same effect. Anime has the ability to truly "show not tell," but this also brings me to my biggest misgiving about anime for the future. The quality of story.
    No matter how good the animation, what an anime is ultimately judged on is based on its story. I could write an essay about what an effective story is, how to incorporate animation to more effectively tell a story, or even if a good story is relevant to quality/enjoyment at all, but that's a topic for another day. My main concern is about the improvement of quality of storytelling in anime. Has it improved? yes and no. Occasionally, some stellar works are produced I must admit, but most of the time new anime couldn't even be worth mentioning because of its story. A couple reasons I could think of in this moment is safety and advertisement. Safety as in creating works that producers know people will watch but aren't particularly outstanding, tons of school anime for example. And advertisement as in creating a work for the sole purpose of promoting the original work. We can see this in the increased number of 12/13 episode seasons which do not particularly go anywhere for example, ultimately causing people to want to read the source material.
    tl;dr
    Animation: improving
    Story: Not improving

      I have to disagree to an extent. It doesn't matter how good the story is from a strictly narrative standpoint if it isn't well told through its visuals just like nobody wants to read a book with good ideas if it's not written well. Also, unlike most people, I enjoy watching abstract and experimental animation which don't have real stories at all. Though even with those there's a discipline of what you show the audience and when that is similar to storytelling in a sort of primitive way.
      There is a lot that I agree with too, though. I've seen one short anime series that stopped before the plot could go anywhere interesting, exactly like you describe. Also, I enjoyed the film Your Name despite the fact that the character design and animation didn't seem to have an original idea in it. There may be some subtleties of motion that I missed but it showed me that story can make up for some level of visual deficiencies. I'd explain what drew me into the story but I don't want to ruin it for other people who haven't seen the movie.
      Go ahead and write that essay. If you do, I'll read it and give my opinion on it.

    also a note and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, One punch man was one of the first productions to go fully digital for a traditionally animated feature, while most anime is digital, the keys and breakdowns are almost always still done on paper, then scanned into the computer to be inked and painted, shirobako shows a great example of most of this process. one punch just ditched the paper all together, IMHO a long time coming but whatever.

    If anime combined the attention to detail of cell animation with the conveniences of digital animation then I think we could really get truly special work; a lot of movies use both practical effects combined with CGI and they age a lot better than movies that solely use one or the other.

    Honestly, I had fallen out of anime for a while, but this new digital revolution, bringing forth new ideas and some bold visions, is starting to reel me back in with a whole new appreciation for anime as an artistic medium. It's a good time to be a lover of technology and/or art, because now we can truly explore the limits of what we can do artistically regardless of medium: animation, film, music, traditional art, etc.
    And with internet and video streaming becoming more and more prevalent, it just means a wider potential audience and a complete upheaval of the corporate system as a whole when it comes to art; either these corporate studios and labels have to adapt to the new changes of "artist first" and make themselves attractive to a particular artist or they will be rendered completely obsolete because of the fact talent can become successful without going through the corporate system. The internet has truly been an amazing thing to come in our lives.

    I wish that there was more focus placed on the other disciplines in anime production now that we've hit a point where everything *looks* really good. These days, I very rarely get floored by a story or by a score in addition to the animation. We're at a point where it should all work in concert.
    The last time it came together for me was Violet Evergarden in W18. Before that, it was Made In Abyss. Both had excellent scores, a gripping story, and amazing animation. But, these days, we get the same isekai and shounen recycled day-in and day-out.
    tl;dr I feel like we could be doing more than just making pretty pictures.

    • @Drstrange3000
      @Drstrange3000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mob Psycho was impressive with how many mediums they used. It was blasted for not looking pretty or clean but did something different and won awards. World of Gumball does something similar with blending different styles to create unique visual style.
      I think anime, and even TV/movies in general, could experiment with spatial audio and other cool sound design tricks.
      A lot of anime feels very recycled for sure. Needs a lot more experimentation.

    I definitely think we are in the beginning of a huge experiment shift in animation, however production budgets is shrinking and production of anime at an all time high something bound to break. Already we are seeing some note worthy studios shut their doors because the margins are tighter than ever for development. I think many older studios will close their doors since they can't adopt to the new paradigm shift in production. So yes I am excited but I think we will loose some studios in the next year's as the shake up happening

    I'm most excited for the possibility (there's no promise) of new stories. Magical girls, boys with destinies, and body horror infused metaphorical monsters still run rampant. Niche is where anime belongs if it wont take the cue of something like...
    One Punch Man.
    Right down to it's pilot (which is economic and direct) the show gives us a character with the most relatable emotion encountered across the internet: frustration. Sure there's also depression and admiration, but in a art form ransacked with pretension One Punch Man is so fresh in comparison. I don't even want a second series. Just point me in the direction of the next show/movie/OVA that's telling us a modern story. Enough with the bunny girls.

    As just a relative outsider with little grasp of the specific changes of the industry, I gotta maybe cut a little bit away from the crowd and say that I don't like a good chunk of sakuga animation. It's not all bad, but I feel like it's not very grounded. It's very flashy, but it feels almost schizophrenic. The choreography and framing of many sakuga shots is poorly done imo, I can barely tell what's going on. I think that limited framerates play a role in this, as the amount of visual information you can convey, while still keeping a really intense and fast sense of action, is hamstrung. It's not all just framerate and medium limitations, though. I would like to see sakuga scenes experiment more with slow motion. I think digital tools could help with this a good amount by utilizing the warp and movement curve tools to change already done drawings more incrementally instead of bombarding the viewer with a ton of disparate frames and hoping they understand it. The human brain takes about three frames to process visual information that it's not totally primed for, so if you're wanting to actually sell the impact of a hit, you have to linger on it for more than three frames, and if you want to sell the motion before the hit, which is arguably more important for how flubbed it is, you have to commit at least three frames and probably more to the curve of that motion. You can get away with less or more depending on how well you leverage your keyframes.
    I'd also like to say that I think a good amount of this is just how the story frames the action. There's nothing explicitly saying that an action scene has to be as flashy as it is within any story, but it often feels like a ton of pressure is placed on action scenes to be as impactful as possible, especially when compared to character animation or more subtle moments, which feels like a weird sort of favoritism by the story of a lot of anime. It's more complex than just leveraging scenes to be high action or high energy when you dump time into them, and I feel like a lot of animation directors don't really get that. Time can also be put into a scene in the form of deliberation, and it feels like a lot of these scenes are poorly thought out and poorly overseen. I'm definitely someone that likes technical action compared to the boombastic, but there's not really a reason that they can't sit within the same piece, or even the same scene. If you're having more schizophrenic and less understandable action, that has to have some service in the story. Maybe our protagonist understands the action less, maybe it's just more metaphorical. Good examples of that might be the more experimental short films you can find on youtube, like boisvert. You can also have even coherent or well coordinated action with really really intense breakneck pacing, when I think of that, I always think of classic hong kong action cinema, with lots of great poses and choreography over the space of just seconds. Or you could just have a coherent action scene with a more normal narrative pacing, like redline.
    Anime's also had a consistent problem with drawing only internal inspiration from within anime, though, so it's no surprise to me when this collapses into pieces with less coherence, both in story and in animation. It's not as self-aggrandizing and cannibalistic as something like webtoon, at least. Have passion for animation, and for anime, but by god, have passion for something else, too.
    but yeah, that's my 2 cents.

    Hey AnimeEveryday! What style do you prefer digital or cel?

    • @AnimeEverydayYT
      @AnimeEverydayYT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't really have a preference, it depends what the animators do with it!

    • @jmalmsten
      @jmalmsten 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Digital or cel? Strange line to draw there... Cels haven't really been used for quite some time now as far as I know at least. Even those that draw on paper usually just scan and do the ink and paint job with digital tools. Or did I misunderstand the question that wasn't even aimed at me?

      AnimeEveryday Thanks for confirming that m8 ! That initially was my first guess but your accent is rather thin so that made me doubt it. Although you did make a video about that scottish event so that also made me lean closer towards this guess.
      P.S. Thanks for your videos ! Because of you, Horizon in d middle of nowhere is now my fav & i also watched some others that u recommended :D

    • @McDudes
      @McDudes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don''t know, I actually think a lot uses after effects. Or at least to composite the layers together and add VFX and other digital effects before sending it to an editor to put all clips and scenes together. Or that's how I imagine it's like.
      Also I would like to know if the bigger studios has their own unique animation softwares or not. Just because I'm curious about it.

      It's called Nihonbashi Koukashita R Keikaku, and you can find it here th-cam.com/video/zGgBk3icgi4/w-d-xo.html
      It's actually not an anime but just a short animated PV featuring 1st Place Co.'s Vocaloid, IA and a song made specifically for it (I think) by Jin.

    If One Punch Man wasn't down to a budget, why are the same staff not working on it? Bullshit. It's all down to a budget. Most of the anime with the best would not be made without an astronomical budget. Even long running anime need a budget. They just have to spread it out more.
    Passion is NOT what pays their bills.

    • @AnimeEverydayYT
      @AnimeEverydayYT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The change of staff for One Punch Man season 2 will most likely be down to Madhouse staff already working on another series of a scheduling clash.
      Higher production TV anime generally have the same budget as standard TV anime. Scheduling usually controls a show's production quality.
