  • A wonderful summers day on the platform at Carlisle 34 years ago. I'd even forgotten about the class 85s at the time. Not realising that I could share these with you in 2020 I didn't take many notes about the train's destinations
but the selection of traction makes up for the details; I hope.

Cheers for that. Was hoping to see my Dad who was a Gaurd working out of carlisle.

Great video. Like it was yesterday. The station hasn't changed much in 30+ years, the woodwork and bridge are now painted a different colour, that's about it 😀 Many thanks for uploading.

Wonderful BR sectorised era footage, and also nice to catch the now preserved 85101 in action! A very evocative noise, you could tell when a roarer was approaching from some distance (often before you could see it).

Fantastic video, brought back many, many happy memories of when Gramps took me to the exact same location in the early 90’s when I would have been a similar age to Nick. Carlisle Citadel was such a magical place with the constant activity and variety which you caught perfectly on camera here. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your support, I'm just so pleased I decided back in 1989 to keep all my VHS tapes and not wipe over them. Now the problem is keeping my VHS player in good order so I can edit for future clips

I was only 8 years old when this footage would have been taken but oh how I'd love to get a time machine and go back those days. Luckily I can do it in model form but nothing will match seeing it for real.

Thanks for watching. I'm so pleased I decided to keep all ( 600+) video tapes. YT wasn't even thought of back then!

Wonderful footage from Carlisle Mike .... good source of information for some modelling inspiration as well to recapture that really interesting era. Many thanks for uploading 👍

There's more where that came from, it just takes time checking all my 3 hour VHS tapes; I have over 100 !!

A lot of memories there of a variety of power that is unlikely to ever be repeated in the UK...
A 08 was the first model engine I ever owned...

86504 & 86505 are rare on video; the 865xx only carried those numbers for about a year before being renumbered back to 86/2.

I just wish I'd taken more clips in the 80/90s. TH-cam didn't exist in those days, but at least I kept my VHS tapes

Less than 6 months later, all 8 of the 86/5s were converted back to 86/2s, as Intercity needed them due to tightness of availability of locomotives.

Cracking footage Mike, thanks for uploading. So much variety everywhere - traction, rolling stock, liveries. The modern railway is just so boring in my opinion.

I used to cycle to Carlisle station from Armathwaite to see the workings of the station. Exactly how it was during 78/79/80. And apart from the traction largely unchanged today I think?
