How to Remove Sunroof - Bumpstop Fix - 1988 Honda CRX Si

  • Quick video on how to repair or replace the CRX sunroof panel. My sunroof would open all the way but the front driver side bumpstop was broken and the sunroof would slide off the track. I would then have to lift the sunroof as I was trying to close it so it would slide onto the track. The new parts fixed the issue!

    Great detailed video as always! The second I saw that broken piece I thought "You can definitely 3D print a replacement for that". I had a friend of mine 3D print a pedal sensor pad replacement for my DA9 works great.

      RELOADINGandSHOOTING lol, the Dremel doesn't have a lot of pull like a grinder and I've been using it forever, and plastic is a lot easier to cut into and not pull the Dremel away from my hand. but still... lol

    Hey what’s up bud is there a way you can make a video removing a ef hatch sunroof?

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have one to remove currently. It's pretty easy, but take a little time. You need to remove all of the plastics which hold up the headliner, then you can get the headliner down. Once the liner is removed you'll see all of the bolts holding the sunroof to the roof.

    I recently ran into the exact same problem with my old bumpstop just giving out on me. Unfortunately I couldn't find where the small metal washer went that's inside the hole for the bolt on the bumpstops. Did you use them for the 3-d printed ones or did you just bolt it down without it?

    I realized you started your video with the sunroof partially open, which helps remove the screws. But what if your sunrood doesnt open at all?? How can you get it to open? Thanks!

      Use a hex head socket or the tool used to crank the sunroof open manually.

    Jon, your courage and creativity is indeed praiseworthy. My sunroof works just dandy right now, but I have wondered what to do, if (When?) it someday craps out on me. The scarce availability of parts is -- day by day -- the one scary thing on the horizon. I am grateful that there is someone like you, to show the rest of us the way. Don't stop producing these videos; they are a precious public service.

      One day I might end up with nothing to do. All of my cars are slowly getting massaged back into all being functionally sound! That's the one thing I enjoy about making the videos. It gives me motivation to get out in the garage and get some work taken care of and my cars are benefiting greatly from it!!

    • @baddestburrito
      @baddestburrito 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OH! God forbid that you run out! But then again, if that happens, then I would expect you to turn your talents to lots of, "in the wild," vids of your cars in action.
      And who knows? My car is an automatic, which I hate with a passion. If you were willing, I might even decide one day to take a trip to Texas -- just to see what there is to see, on a, "Great American Road Trip," -- and pay you to convert it to stick. After all, I've literally seen your work, and it's top notch. It would be an honour to be driving around in a piece of, "Jon Widmer, automotive art." Haha. It would be a kind of 2 birds, 1 stone thing, I figure. See America, and improve the car at the same time.
      That's just castles in the sky right now, though. I'm just throwing it out there, as a future project for waaaaaay down the road. If you're not into it, I'll understand.

    I have the same exact crx.. '88 Barbados yellow..although mine has a little rust. With 320k miles!. My sun roof did not work so I took off the motor and all the moving components. Then I put a pin to prevent the roof from opening. Then I bent the tail so it doesn't slide. Lastly, I put silicon so water doesn't get in.. I got rid of the draining hoses that go in each corner of the car (it was leaking). I cut a roof off a Dx. And hopefully do a sunroof delete!

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man, sounds like you got it all sorted out. That's the only thing that annoys me about CRX Si's is when the sunroof does not work any longer. They can be a potential headache. I always try to stay away from buying CRX's with non-functioning sunroofs!

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hate to say it but it's probably done. The motor has the spool which pulls the wires which open and retract the sunroof. I've seen this happen but don't know if there is a fix besides replacing the whole assembly. 😑

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mechanism which pulls the sunroof open and closed might not be attached to the motor any longer. I believe it is a wire of some sort, with teeth on it. Similar to a timing belt. Over time it seems to slip and although the motor turns, it doesn't work with the pull/push of the wire/belt that move the sunroof to open and closed positions.

    great vid. Iv got a problem with me ed7 hatch the front of the sunroof is sagging and not sealing properly. anything you can recommend taking a look at? iv seen you can add shims on a crx but a hatch is different.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacob Tyson I don't have any experience with that. I'm thinking it has something to do with the rails. Possibly something in there is also work out not letting it slide back into the correct position.

  • @betorod24
    @betorod24 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jon my sunroof on my 91 crx si won't open all the way, it will just tilt. Could it be a switch issue cause when I mess with the switch it will kinda open all the way.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you could try to open the switch up and clean the contact points. My switch was acting similar to yours, but since I got the car, every time I start it up I open and close the sunroof just to keep all the moving parts lubricated. And in doing that, my switch seems to work fine now. I don't think the previous owner used the sunroof ever since it was off track.

  • @Wimmus1978
    @Wimmus1978 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the problem was that your sunroof @ the moment it turns downwoard to close it stops ?
    because mine does slide forward and backwards but does not close on the passenger side.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bump stops let it fall off track. Once it does you cannot get it closed.

  • @jordansimcox9805
    @jordansimcox9805 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a question for you so would it be the bump stops that would keep the driver side back of the sunroof from closing all the way also the rest of the sunroof closes perfect but the driver side rear of it
