I’m heartbroken for you. I was an Olympic athlete and got drug tested all the time and it’s really HARD to be on top of everything that goes into your body. Many people don’t realize the little things that can affect a drug test. Your fans support you 100% you are such an incredible athlete and human, please be easy on yourself for this mistake. Take care of yourself through this time. ❤❤❤

@@allie_ostranderThe drug-testing rules are pretty weird & arbitrary sometimes. WADA listed Caffeine as a ban substance as recently as 2004, which a I thought was interesting. Maybe they got a Coke sponsorship or something. Anyhoo, I know this has got to be upsetting for you but try not to stress it too much.

My derm kept pushing Spironolactone on me (and she knew I was a D1 athlete/runner) but I didn’t want to take it. Months later I found out it was on the banned substances list and was shocked. Derms should really know about this!!!

It's not their job to research what athletes can and can't take according USADA. That is your responsibility alone to educate yourself and familiarize yourself with the rules. That being said, I do think USADA could do a better job at making things like this more aware to athletes. They ban more than steroids and HGH but most people do not know this.

Ugh, yes, spironolactone is banned because I guess it can be used to mask other PEDs - it is a diuretic as you said. As someone who suffers from hormonal acne, I feel for you. I take spironolactone myself for moderate to severe hormonal acne - it's really hard to feel like you can show your face when you are plagued with things like cystic acne, nodules, etc. There have been other athletes that have tried to get exceptions for this and they have not been flexible at all. Unfortunately. I'm just thankful I'm not a pro athlete so I can take it without issue.
An alternative to spiro for acne - maybe combination birth control will help. Food did very little for me to "fix" my acne. Soy did cause issues for me years ago and that helped some but I didn't find that cutting any specific thing out really did anything (other than soy and even now, I don't eat soy and my acne still flared up again after a number of clear years so... it's not really soy any more). Combination birth control did work for me for a long time and I am nearly certain that is safe for sport.

I’m glad you addressed it , but also never would think you would do this on purpose you are loved and cared for. I also hope this video helps doctors and others in medical to consider this and ask those questions to athletes and in vice versus having athletes research before they even take the first dose . Oh good Lord, that was perhaps the most astoundingly ridiculous ban I have ever heard of. Simply for a masking agent that doesn't enhance performance, for which there was a wholly important medical need for use? The important thing is that this medication improved your health and well being.
But thinking of things, I guess one can barely tell the difference between you and Ben Johnson....who after winning the Olympic Gold medal for the 100 meters, looked like he could do some reps of 400 pounds on the bench press. Performance enhancing drugs got that man disqualified from the Gold? No surprise there!
You absolutely are one of the most wonderfully honest people in this entire world of sharing who you are, and that is something to be so genuinely proud of!
So Allie O (I like that, that rhymes....I may be old, but don't ever accuse me of being mature!) what in the world could anybody have learned from this?
That whomever chose to implement this farcically absurd, completely ludicrous, featherbrained, inane 4 month ban, does not have the basic reasoning and logic required for any career position outside of government. I am sure there is a position waiting for this person at the NIH!
Congratulations on making it through your ban. You are just such a great person to share this ridiculous moment that you had to go through. But you are strong, you are healthy, and my advice is simply to go run and have fun!

Darn. Sorry that happened to you. Wishing the responsibility could fall on someone else like the dermatologist, or a coach, who's job it could be to look for these things so the athlete could focus on training. I'm sure you know what to do. Come back after these 4 months even better

I’m so sorry to hear that this has happened to you! As much as you should maybe have looked into the medication you took, I totally understand not thinking a skin medication could be involved in or be a PED

Please appeal and clear your name if that is a possibility. Your honesty, being transparent and the love you have for the sport will get you through this. We all make mistakes that can effect everything we do, it's just a part of life. You are a tough trooper who loves what you do. So as a big fan I stand with you. Sargent, Medic, Vet, and former runner, Stan.

Unfortunately, the appeal process is so long and stressful with USADA, that I would have been out of competition for potentially years if I didn’t accept this sanction. As much as I want to fight it, I also want to get through this stress and move on.

@@allie_ostrander I understand the immense pressure you must be under. You are a pro with everything on the line. This is something an athlete never needs. Hoping you find something to take your mind off this.

I’m so sorry you had to be punished because others cheat… which is truly the case… I’m sure this had to be extremely hard to accept as it was not done. For the purpose of enhancing your performance… I would also like to thank you for playing by the rules and accepting the consequences of your actions even though you didn’t know you had done anything wrong… you are a model athlete and I will continue to support you!!!!

I believe you. I’ve taken that medicine for acne bc of a hormone being high. I couldn’t keep taking the medication because of side effects. I would think the med would have hindered your performance… I believe you weren’t using it to mask anything.
Getting the right doctor/s is a lot of work… hopefully, you can find one main doctor who works with pro-athletes to oversee your care and approve what other doctors prescribe. In addition, now you know more about researching meds (database you mentioned) to make sure the meds aren’t banned for any reason. To be safe, search under brand and then generic names.
Thank you for being transparent! A process like this is hardest for honest people because you care about doing what’s right. You want to win fairly. Your story will help other athletes avoid unnecessary penalty. Please try not to be too hard on yourself 💓

Yes, it's super hard to find a doctor that is both 1) experienced with professional athletes and 2) covered by insurance, especially because many registered testing pool athletes (like me) have no support from USATF or USADA

I have always been a huge fan of yours and greatly respected you. I believe you when you say you have never tried to get an unfair advantage.but Im gonna keep it ❤real with you. To put out a video letting your fans and supporters know that you were under a 4 month ban 1 DAY before the ban is lifted is not being fully transparent. You are a VERY smart young lady and it is hard to for me to understand how you would make sure that the rx is not performance enhancing but not make sure it wasnt banned? I must be missing something. To say that you take full responsibility is not praiseworthy as you are fully responsible. Having said all that, EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES and I know you will learn and grow from this experience and do better. You didnt have to say anything at all so I do respect that you made this video. I continue to support you and wish you even greater sucess in everything in the future.

Well, even the best make mistakes - look at the pros - there are many examples of similar stories (Sharapova in Tennis is one of the 1st to pop up in mind).
I think it is not about not making mistakes at all - would love it to be possible but I do not believe it really is achievable. For me it is much more about learning your lessons. And I think you definitely came through your learning curve. With this, I hope it will never happen to you in the future and I am sincerely wishing you all the best!
