I really like that “fig in winter” example. Enjoying a fig is a good, but you have to keep in mind that the fig is temporary. Or else you’ll be that one Spongebob meme of Patrick eating a chocolate bar and then getting angry his chocolate is gone.
@@MrUssy101 have u even watched the video? All of the things that he said were really coherent and he didn t use any wrong terminology. The Patrick meme I think fits better to get the message of acceptance across because someone could argue that the child who wished for figs in winter could grow up to invent a greenhouse.
This video has helped me in a strange way. There has been a lot of pretty bad things happening in my life lately, so I've been angry and sad. I've lost my appetite and I can't sleep at night, and then I sleep during the day because I don't have any motivation because of the things happening. But watching this, I realize the things that have been happening are out of my control. I can't change them. I'll try not to let it get to me and move on. Thanks for this video, epic.
It's really interesting how stoicism compares to buddhism. There's a lot of the same ideas expressed in a different light- bonds vs attachments, accordance with nature vs the three universal truths,,, etc. But it seems like buddhism has some bigger/harder to grasp ideas with the goal of enlightenment, whereas stoicism is a lot more straight forward with the more attainable goal of inner peace/prosperity. I went into this book with more of a buddhist background and I was resistant to learning it. I felt like I already found the perfect philosophy for me, but according to buddhism you should always "empty your cup" and you can't learn what you think you already know, so I went into it with an open mind. Stoicism really surprised me and there are a lot of lessons I will hopefully take with me for the rest of my life. Although there are some things I still prefer in buddhism, I would definitely now consider my ideal philosophy to be somewhere between the two. It really opened my eyes and I hope to study more schools of philosophy and see what else I can learn
Hey, what book what you suggest to get started on reading Buddhism? I'm very intrigued by the idea, I watch a lot of Dr K and his ideas have helped me a lot and I want to learn more.
*Felix just crushed it at showcasing the merits of stoicism here.* On a related thread, from my perspective as a Harvard neurobiologist, achievement of worthwhile long-term pursuits requires following a narrow road of focused thoughts and actions to incrementally progress along your envisioned path. Despite our best of intentions, we often fall off the path - either into overstimulation (social media, news) or unconsciousness (junk food, alcohol/sedating drugs). It's a well-known psychological phenomenon of temporal discounting: opting for a small reward now rather than a larger reward later, the neural mechanisms of which are starting to be elucidated. We are prone to stimuli that induce quick striatal dopamine spikes to our reward circuitry, such as what comes from social-media notifications. For some, simply "enjoying life" by immersing in overstimulation or unconsciousness - without long-term pursuits - may be the most fulfilling path. Truly. But if these once enjoyable activities begin undermining your life, consider getting back on the narrow road of clean and calm present energy to engage in pursuits that are worthwhile to you personally and which may concurrently benefit others. On that note, after several months of preparation, I'll soon be releasing videos on leveraging our brains to improve our lives. Cheers. 🧠⚡🧘♂️
my favorite quotation from the book: "what should we have at hand in (painful) situations like this? it is the knowledge of what is mine and what is not mine, and of what we can and cannot do. yes, i must die - but must i die bawling? yes, i might have to be put in chains - but moaning and groaning too? i must be exiled; but is there anything keeping me from going with a smile, calm and self-composed?"

the fact that people are getting more into philosophy these days makes me so happy. It seems like we've had resurgence in philosophical studies amongst a more general audience. Such a good thing. I live by the stoic philosophy every day. (I try at least.)
I haven’t read the whole book but what you were talking about completely resonated with me. When you talk about owning things, it’s also the illusion of being in control of what happens to you in life which is the issue. I have a serious chronic illness and have been bedridden for years. Which really confronts me with what I can’t control. So I relate to this so deeply. And it’s good to be reminded as I’m often unhappy because I want to grasp at a healthy body and I can’t. Most people spend as long as they can running away from the truth that they can’t control their lives. Thanks, Pewds!
He has a nice view of Stoism, maybe he Talks a Little too lot about the Idea of Property, and he has a modern way of thinking about Stoism, like letting out the Believe in Gods, or Life Goals etc. But i am happy that he talks about the old Schools of philosophy
I cant believe I found this on Felix's channel. The stoics changed my life, I found them through CBT and REBT , and haven't looked back since. I was once considered treatment resistant for depression and anxiety. Even with my mother on her death bed, scheduled to undergo MAID tomorrow. I have found the toolbox to analyze every single aspect of my life and perspective and am able to use it in circumstances that would have normally crushed me. Marcus, epictetus, seneca, zeno, and the rest had incredible perspective and I am a better man for finding them. Thank you Felix for the reminder that this philosophy can hit anyone.
Hello, I hope you’re doing well. I found The works of the stoics likewise at the time of my mothers passing before finishing school, I hope you’re philosophy of stoicism is helping you through this trying time. ❤
How did you manage to apply what you’ve learned to your life? Currently reading Discourses of Epictetus and i feel like I’m not applying what I’m reading to my own life, making the same mistakes over and over.
*me currently not in my existentialism zoom class* * pewdiepie giving a whole ass philosophy class * me: wait a damn minute..... dude this is fucking amazing your explanations on philosophical writing are so clear and concise, my teacher should take notes. I get that this videos about books don’t get as much views as the others but please don’t stop making them, they are a treasure. As long as you enjoy doing them a lot of us will too, even if don’t read along.
I just love these videos. I love the fact that Pewds is certainly getting a ton of people into philosophy, and on good literature in general. I love technology but damn the damage it does to reading skills and our intelligence or wisdom is quite horrible thing.
I actually think that the internet and the technology made me a lot more intelligent and much more wise. I guess it really just depends on how tou use it
I have a different point of view on that. Do you realize how much technology has affected mankind's pursure of science and knowledge? Today, we can find information from the click of a button. It depends on how you use it, because no, technology is not damaging our reading nor our intelligence, it's just a tool waiting to be used. Look at the kindle, it brought people that never read to read books for the first time, and made it easier to carry multiple books with you on the go. And you can read in the dark if you want.
Watching this video on a rainy Saturday morning gives me unspeakable amount of comfort. I really appreciate this type of videos from Felix where he can share with us his passion for philosophy. Can't wait for the next book review
@@MrUssy101 um, okay? i thought he struggled a bit at expressing himself too, but so do i and i can relate. i got the gist of what he was trying to say tho. not everyone is great at language
I agree with Yama (lol, high five for Haikyuu). Pewds is an introvert and English is not even his first language. @Mr Ussy Also, I don't see how he 'presents' himself as an intellectual. He constantly talks about things he likes and are interesting to him - games, shows, memes, and in this case, a philosophy book. I personally liked his review and reflections here. But as Epictetus said, not every thing is in our control, so just go and have your own opinion.
“How do we improve the recipe? We change nothing because we can’t improve perfection, we just changed the packaging” it sounds like a quote from apple when they release a new phone lol
My main concern w stoicism is that I can never tell WHEN things are out of my control. It’s really hard to say if you CAUSED some event you didn’t to happen to happen, or if it was ultimately out of your control. You can always attribute some amount of blame on yourself w most issues, and therefore guilt’o’clock
Well said. I wonder if part of stoicism is also to kinda convince yourself that this issue you have *is* out of your control whether that is entirely true or not. Or basically not to fret over it at all.
I think the point is to not cry over spilled milk, even if you spilled the milk yourself. If you can’t remedy or control the situation in the present why worry?
I can understand where you are coming from but you have to realise that Philosophy is something very subjective. No 2 humans will have the same opinion about something. That said, Felix just stated that Stoicism is about accepting things for what they are and from what I am deducing from what you wrote, you seem to be quite the overthinker. Overthinkers are known to be people who overanalyse things. Most of the time they find themselves to be blamed even though they did nothing wrong. If you feel like you did something wrong, dont think too hard about it. Just accept that you did something wrong and move on and learn from it. I hope this helps. 🤙
I just saw his starship troopers vid the other day for the first time and i was amazed. I didnt even notice it was pewds tbh. Just felt like a well constructed review and analysis. His more serious side is pretty great.
I would really like to see more content like this from Felix. I am not an avid reader, but I am very interested in philosophy and psychology. I guess I've thought a lot about stoicism in my life without knowing it.. without realizing those thoughts had already been expressed so eloquently hundreds of years ago.. I would really enjoy a podcast with subjects like this.
If anyone is interested in stoicism I would also recommend reading How to Think Like a Roman Emperor which is about Marcus Aurelius. It’s a very interesting book that I would highly recommend.
tbh he actually summed up the book really well the idea that the freedoms we have come from the self rather than our perceptions of whats around is a powerful one, and gives light to how one can elevate themselves through the objective lense which is an intriguing concept I feel that more people can learn from, even if they're not willing to embrace the philosophical side of this coin
PewDiePie: *I read a book* ... Me, who never reads books: *Books are cool* . No but seriously, I really liked this episode, especially the part with not owning anything, I like that perspective.
Please do read. It is so beneficial to your mental health. Reading anything can make you learn so much. Best thing i did was start reading again after years of not reading books at all.
Not getting upset or angry or stressed out over something that you cannot control is something I need to apply to my life. It is difficult but I am going to try
It’s refreshing listening to Felix talk about serious things like philosophy. People are so quick to judge him because he’s a “gamer youtuber” but he’s so obviously intellectual and worldly
I really hope you're just commenting for likes or are a teenager, because if you're a grown woman and actually think he's intellectual and worldly your life must be truly sad.

Hey Felix. I lost my job on Friday. But as I was signing the form towards my unemployment, I wasn’t sad or angry. I remember your video the one where you talked about not being angry about something you can’t control. Today, after a night of drinking and saying goodbye to my colleagues, I saw your video. I just want to say thank you. I could have made an ruckus, or shouted or fought with the hr. But I just accepted it. You inspire me to be better. You do make me better. You don’t know me, and I don’t know you. But you made a bigger difference in my life than most people in my life. That may be sad, but for me it’s a blessing. @@greentomato8881 nothing. But I hear the voice with the accent an everything. The it iz what it iz is just a very simplified version of the philosophy discussed in the beginning of the book.
Epictetus thinking is considered to be the root of a school of thought in psychotherapy. Albert Ellis based his work on the perception that it's how we react to an event and not the event in itself that upsets us. And Ellis' theory became what we now know as CBT cognitive behavioural therapy. I really like how philosophy in its core it's in everything, its life itself
I would like that as well, but if I were to put myself in his shoes - I'd probably balk at the added pressure it would put on his schedule. He'd have to schedule the readings and the talks... I don't know about you, but I can't schedule my reading time. I either feel like reading at the time, or I don't. If I had a "job" that forced me to do it, I would lose interest in the blink of an eye. Maybe just me, though.

Call me stoic but I'm not binding myself to a pod cast.
I like this, I got angry over something I couldn’t control this morning and instead of reacting or dwelling on it, I went on a run. Got my emotions out in a healthy positive way. Don’t dwell on things you can’t control
@@ABAlphaBeta he was not miserable due to any externality, and dying alone is not an issue for a Stoic like him, since his judgements did not rely on things outside his control

I really like the idea of trying to use Stoicism for the little things in everyday life. I worry a lot and the therapy I’m having for anxiety kind of ties in with this stuff, especially the “accepting what you can and cannot control” aspect. May have to check this book out, thanks Pewds!

@@elizaandreadaki9942 but are you ancient?
Cheers. 🧠⚡🧘♂️

Love you all❤❤ keep support . I again start streaming from 1march❤😍❤

I was sad all day because of my boss leaving and my friends want to leave and look for another job... And I arrive at home and get this... This is a sign to let it go and don't be sad, because I can't control them. Thank you for confirming my thoughts that I had all day about this sad feeling.

I really like the idea of trying to use Stoicism for the little things in everyday life. I worry a lot and the therapy I’m having for anxiety kind of ties in with this stuff, especially the “accepting what you can and cannot control” aspect. May have to check this book out, thanks Pewds!
