Well people think Ellen burstyn should have won for requiem of a dream. I have not seen it but I heard it's an amazing performance. Burstyn won already too. That might have hurt her winning. They like to spread the awards out.
It was between Julia and Ellen (who gives an undeniably heart-wrenching performance), but this was always Julia’s to win. People forget that when this film came out, she was America’s sweetheart with a bubbly, wholesome image and was typically only cast in romantic comedies. No one thought she could pull off a role as edgy as this one. But oh did she ever. She hit a home run, and it took everyone by surprise. It marked a turning point in her career and people started to really take her seriously as a dramatic actress.
@@chrispa9573 As good as Roberts was, Burstyn was better. That being said, Requiem for a Dream was a much more polarizing film, and many viewers didn't like it, and thus Burstyn was not as universally praised as Roberts. That's why Roberts got the Oscar. Just my 2 cents.
The lawyer's refusal to drink the water after hearing it was from the well that they are contesting as toxic was enough capitulation for the utility company's gross negligence. She should have brought a gallon to court and asked the defendant lawyers to drink it in front of the court LOL.
actually the fewer the amount of water, the better the effect. If she won't even have one sip of it, it instantly becomes much scarier, than if she didn't want to bathe in it.
Well in fact, this is what happened in real life. She told them, whilst in court, it was Hinkley well water and throughout the hearing the defendants lawyers didn’t take a sip :-)
crank up the heat, make them *thirsty* in the he11 they and their clients created, out of greed, harming so many...and btw, they would have felt right at HOME, those devil's minions. 👿👹😈💀👺☠👿👹😈
@@jeffvincent6690 Also if you look closely at the nametag of the waitress Erin plays, you may be surprised to find her name is "Julia R." So they switched as a cameo joke.

Oh, you are an EPIC legend, Erin Brockovich! Julia Roberts was a BOSS here! Wow! And the real lawsuit! Now, that is bonafide, fearless leadership! Unsurpassed passion. Passion that fights, that sacrifices, that invests, that knows no end, that does not lie down until justice is done! RESPECT!
The water bit was the cherry on top. She couldnt have possibly hit them with reality any harder than that. They didnt want to drink that water and as lawyers they cant do anything about her serving them the tainted water because their entire disposition is that the water is harmless.
This is a message to all those who let unethical practices like this slip by in the company they work for. Where are you gonna be when your ship starts sinking?
I love this film and I only watched it for the first time yesterday. Julia is of course a phenomenal actress but I fell in love with Albert Finney. His little facial expressions without saying a word did it for me. 😂🙌
Right before everyone sat down, the lawyer asked the two who are not talking in this scene to just be there for buff, and to make them look tougher! Lol what a genius move. 😄
Those fake lawyers' reactions added a lot to this scene. And this also shows how far Erin has come with the other employees at the firm -- they now accept and admire her.
Also, the scene where, the female lawyer is being condescending about the case and having all their information, especially their phone numbers. Erin rattles off a plethora of information, since she memorizes facts about the plaintiffs.
Her spirit in this scene is EVERYTHING. It's passion but also screams for love and justice. She believes in what she is advocating for so much so that her words don't become her words but they are her spirit's fire taking over her and making her shine as bright as she does. Anyone ever feel like that? How about recently?
And the real Erin Brockovich too - had some appearances recently. They let her criticize the Biden transition team (a Dupont lackey for the EPA, right !)
I watched this in theaters when I was about 23 or so. I fell asleep. Twice. But after repeated viewings I have really come to appreciate the film and the acting performance from Julia Roberts and Albert Finney. This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie.
I took away from this scene that she had already drunk some of that water. The glass was already almost empty when she picked it up and they were all in there waiting for a while
I think it meant more that she didn't drink it when she was told where it came from. They're tried arguing for years that the water was safe and that the amount of toxicity in the water was miniscule. Her not drinking, just shows she didn't want to take the risk herself.
Ahahahah, after all these years still a classic! You have to love this film and of course, Julia here made an Oscar-deserved work. Truly well deserved.
Julia Roberts' acting was great, but it was honestly far away from "oscar-deserved". She didn't stand a chance against Ellen Burstyn's frighteningly great performance in Requiem For a Dream. The Academy obviously just used this opportunity to give an Academy Award to a well-known actress. One of the biggest Oscar failures of all time!
This is one of my favorite movies... it breaks my heart that there are still industrial companies polluting the earth and most of them are getting away with it
"The case was settled in 1996 for US$333 million, the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit in U.S. history. I love this part when Erin (Julia) shreds PG&E. I was going to believe that the woman would've drunken that glass of water until she told her it came from the well.
The real Erin Brockovich was so good at taking on big corporations she was 11/11 in all cases she pursued. Her reputation got so good when the corporation heard she was onto them. They instructed the lawyers to settle whatever she requested before it got to a court or before she dug too deep. She won half a billion dollars in settlements in her life-time without a law degree. In fact, she won cases as just a legal clerk she won over $10 million in commissions from the cases which are more than some law-firms get without a legal degree. After winning this case, a lot of law firms she applied at that turned her down, begged her to come work for them. To this day, a lot of lawyers whenever they catch wind that Brockovich is looking into something, most start digging cause they know she found a gold-mine.
Man Julia Roberts took this movie to a whole other level. It's like she was on a personal mission to scare the hell out of every one of these people. YYYYYYAAAAAAAASSSSSSSS. GIIIRRRRLLL SLAY IT!!
The one thing keeping this from being one of the greatest movie moments EVER is that bitch lawyer not drinking the water because Erin dropped that bomb too early, but still Julia Roberts nailed it.
It maybe would have been very effective if she had already taken a drink. However, I feel by telling her it was from a well in Hinkley, and then her not taking a drink, spoke volumes and was incredibly powerful, too. It demonstrated to everyone there that they obviously wouldn't want to drink the water, so why should they expect the Hinkley residents to?

+Olbohn Thanks, guys! Yes, just so powerful that she hesitated and didn't take the drink. That made it obvious to everyone there, including herself, the unwillingness and danger of drinking contaminated water. And, if it was not safe for her to drink, why should she and the other lawyers and PG&E Corporate expect the Hinkley residents to drink it and/or not be compensated adequately for all of their health issues?! Just such a powerful scene...not just by all that was said, but everything that was implied.
That's called poisoning and would have put her at legal risk and its good she warned her about source and content of water. It was up to the bitch now to drink or not.
