Great content! Just the cauldron/stew pot video and info I was looking for! I am making wool felt hats in uncommon shapes ( bycocket, bicorn, tricorn, pirate, fez, etc) and am looking for a caudron to boil wool hat blanks in. Now I know a 30 will work for me AND an easier way of reseasoning if I buy used! Used cauldron prices are spooky high here!
I have one of these that was used as a garden water feature... I am inspired to try to turn it back into a cooking pot....have no idea what I would cook in it though :-)
You did pretty good for your first shot at a large pot. What the oil is doing is “polymerization” not “caramelization”. You will save a lot of propane if you cover the pot. I use a #2 wash tub. A good way to finish the top is to season with it upright. It will season the top great but will burn it off the very bottom. Just wire bush that part an do it again upside down. Don’t oil near the lip. Just get the bottom really well. I have my pots much higher from the flame to minimize the lip problem you had. Good Job!!
I have one that has a steel cylinder it sits in w/notches to fit the handles. saves fuel whether wood or propane. 2 side cutouts let air in. Great job man!
I have been collecting those pots. Tacky sides on mine too. I think if you cook with it sitting on the ground, the fire on the sides will finish the season on your first cook. I may never have a first cook. Family of 2 and I don't know how to cook! Next zombie apocalypse we will be in great shape!!
