    Most of what you explained in the video is spot on and is also a reason a lot of truck drivers go with glider kits (otr semis spend most their times rolling so regens are easier). It’s been a serious debate on which is better for the environment and for the vehicle itself. From personal experience, I can definitely say pickup trucks run a lot better without all the extra exhaust restrictions choking the engine and killing performance when they eventually get stopped up. As far cleanliness goes, it depends mostly on how you drive and where your ECU tune is in regards to performance. If your truck is running poorly due to a failed regen, chances are it’s probably running dirtier than a fully deleted truck.

      Joe Dirt EGR/EGRV has everything to do with performing a regen. to burn soot off of the DPF the aftertreatment system (depending on which engine) relies on increasing exhaust temps through manipulation/restriction of ITV/ETV and EGRV. So it goes hand in hand.

    • @Russxm
      @Russxm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe Dirt Fact #1 soot DOES recycle thru the engine. this recycled exhaust (inert) gas is put back into the cylinders to displace the amount of oxygen, lowering combustion temp - thus lowering (emissions) NOx. this is one of the ways we get soot in the engine oil - THRU RECIRCULATION.
      Fact #2 if ANYTHING comes out the tail pipe, you have a potential catastrophic component failure in your exhaust system. Soot is trapped and turned into ash (ash also doesn't escape DPF) by the DPF and DOC. this is why the DPF itself can be regenerated a set number of times before it needs to be removed and further addressed. soot is burned off - turned into ash which is still is trapped by the filter.
      stop with the name calling. if you're wrong be a man about it.

  • @JoePJack1
    @JoePJack1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    FYI, during a Regen the soot is not sent back into your engine. Diesel is pumped directly into your exhaust and the soot is oxidized by high temperature and goes out the exhaust pipe not your engine. It's the EGR that sends soot back to your engine.So a Regen has nothing to do with sending soot to your engine.

    • @UncleDonDon

    • @JoePJack1
      @JoePJack1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don Riedel no, during a REGEN DIESEL IS pumped into your exhaust. That’s how the temperature of the exhaust increases to over 1000 degrees. Kinda har to accomplish that with DEF that is 67% water. DEF is continuously pumped into the exhaust to reduce Nox emissions.

    Just to get rid of some of the myths here. 1. You have no idea how the DPF Regen cycle works. It doesnt doesn't go back through your engine. It burns it in the DPF and out the tail pipe. It intentionally gets the EGTs high in the DPF to burn off the soot and regenerate the catalyst in it. 2. It's not that the EPA wouldn't trust you to initialize the DPF Regen cycle, it's that the average pickup owner wouldn't want to. Likely to keep from hurting the sales of Diesel pick-ups, as well as reduce the likelihood of damaging the DPF/Motor (by owners that typically have no clue how to even drive), manufacturers decided it was best to keep the DPF as a self-maintaining system. Large trucks, particularly semi's and buses sometimes have an extra gauge on the dash that measures DPF efficiency. They also have a toggle switch that allows you to override the Regen Cycle for a period of time, as well as initiate the regen cycle manually. To keep from scaring off potential buyers, diesel pickup manufacturers decided to skip adding extra switches and buttons and make it seem like the system is maintenance free.... but it's not.

    • @evanmccloud1786

      You can sometimes force Regen in the kenworths

    • @m2kkillshot
      @m2kkillshot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The biggest problems with the DPF and the regen cycle is in the trucking industry or farming industry or those people that keep their trucks in enclosed garages, the super high temperatures that are required for the Regen to clean out the system has lead to fires that have damaged property and have almost cost people their lives. I had a co-worker that almost lost her fiance because his Truck went into regen while he was in the sleeper and the system malfunctioned and got so hot that the cab of the truck started to fill with smoke luckily he was able to get out of the truck in time and since he was at a truck stop they were able to get the fire department there in time to keep the truck from going up in flames. There have been others that have not been so lucky. Farmers have lost their entire barns due to their equipment going into a regen cycle and then parking the tractor in a barn where the floors can be covered in Hay or other very flammable materials and since the exhaust is so hot from the regen it ignites the materials around the equipment and then the farmer loses their barn and any equipment that was stored in the barn.

    What you guys have to keep in mind by deleting all the EGR and DPF equipment is it could come back to bite you at some point. While it is largely unenforced at this point in time I can foresee a large push to require emissions testing on medium and heavy duty trucks in the near future. So if you pull your equipment off, you better keep it around in case you have to put it back on.

    During a regen the exhaust is not sent back to the engine the computer dumps more fuel into the engine to get the exhaust hotter which burns the soot in the dpf filter. All the extra fuel is not burn but is assisting in turning the soot into ash to exit out the tail pipe. But you are right all that unburned fuel is bad on the engine.

    Good video man.. Just as someone posted a few hours ago - California smog is a mother. You obviously have a major smog plug. The average dude in California with no hookup in the smog world would get screwed because he'd have to revert changes every time he has to get a smog check - which makes the whole thing a pain in the butt. Another thing - regarding DPF: that soot doesn't get recirculated back into your engine (as stated on your video). The filter is located in the last 3rd of your exhaust system. There's a 9th fuel injector in there. When the sensors see 40grams of buildup; it light's off fuel in the particulate filter. That ash goes right out the tailpipe, and not back into the engine. EGR gases however to get sent back through the combustion system of the engine. I like the video. Good work - just wish CA didn't have such stringent smog laws.

    I see you're at Jimmy Johnson Chevy in SD, right in my backyard, well sort of. Not it pertains to me, my diesels are pre-'07, but how does this affect your emissions check?
    Back when I had my '03 Duramax, I took it to a dealer for some work, some warranty some normal maintenance, I got my truck back with a new headlight and new inner fender well. Both items were nothing related to what I brought it in for, but for whatever reason, I did not notice until several weeks later. At that point, I could have said something to the dealer, but I had driven it for those weeks, so they could have said I did it.
    In short, yes, try to keep an eye on your vehicle if you can. Or if you want to be safe, just take several pics of your truck before it goes in for service, the photos you take with your phone will have a date/time stamp so you can prove that if there was damage, it was not there prior to being at the dealership or any other shop.

    the whole fuel system is covered under the powertrain an diesel 100k warranty unless the fuel system was contaminated with water or gas I am a Gm tech an also the soot gets blown out the tail pipe as ash not back into the engine, I agree tho with deleting the emission systems are terrible for the trucks, I own a deleted duramax 9 out of 10 times a dmax comes in with a cel it's for the emissions system

    Magnusson Moss Act is something to look into RE a tuner or chip voiding your warranty. While the dealership can, of course, make it difficult for you, the Magnusson Moss Act says that they can only deny a warrantable issue/claim if they can prove that the mods you did directly caused the issue. Granted, if you do a full delete, you don't have a leg to stand on given the dealership can often say they simply won't touch it given it's illegally mod'd.

    Two things to note:
    1. The majority of the PCM's with OBD II Systems come standard with a KLM function. Now I know with Ford's to eliminate any trace of a quote unquote footprint of any non-stock based tunes you have to reflash the PCM back to stock disconnect the battery(or batteries) and turn on headlights to deplete the remaining juice within the system & get rid of any footprint from KLM. I usually let the vehicle sit disconnected overnight to achieve a full clean reset. Upon reconnecting the battery(or batteries) drive the vehicle for 50 to 100 miles driving like your breaking in a new engine or transmission. So no lead footing until the odometer reading says you have driven 50 to 100 miles. By driving that amount of miles you will not only eliminate any trace of any tunes used.. but the truck will then be ready to meet emissions inspection or warranty inspection.. granted all emissions need to be visually present and functioning during inspection in able to retain warranty and pass emissions.
    2. There are a few programmer companies that retain a NO VOID of automotive manufacturers warranty. Look around you'll find something of such.
    Hope this help you with any loop holes in the emissions & warranty aspect. There are plenty of ways finding those loop holes.. you just gotta find the that fits perfect with your ride and your states emissions requirements.
    Like me for instance I'm currently working on my Ford 6.0 and making it the only emissions compliant sleeper to achieve more than 600 ponies in California.
    I could careless & could give a flying hillbilly f#ck about the rivalry.. when it comes to another diesel owner struggling to retain warranty or to meet emissions.. I'm one to at least give the respectable lending hand of the knowledge of living through it and how to.
    Respects and good luck man👍

    Great Video. I was on the edge, I have a 2016, Nissan Titan XD, 5.0 cummins, 23,000 miles.. Today is 12/25/2020, last month I had a CEL used a AZ scanner and it said I had a NOX sensor bad, not something AZ carries, Dealer cost $600 each and have to replace in pairs otherwise computer don't like it the experts say. Took it to the dealer, who stole $150 from me to read codes and diagnosis system. Nissan got rid of their Diesel Techs, the senior Tech is a good guy though.. Repair order came back and said DEF is good, dosing valve is good, suspected SCR based on similar issues found on the Titans fixed after R&R. Nissan has exclusions to emission system exclusions such as not covered under warranty in a no emissions testing State, ditto with the $2000 extended warranty, of which I have over 100,000 miles or 3 years left on, unless I delete.. or modify etc.. However, the SCR replacement would cost at least $4000 to start to see if that was really the problem if not they would have to continue guessing what it might be.. only additive I put in the fuel was a cummins certified diesel fuel additive.. used, either Blue DEF or the Walmart if in a bind.. after a month of going back and forth on the Delete I think this video has convinced me take the plunge.. of course the weather is not trying to help me out any as it is 12 Degrees out today.. I am trying to get a tune to let me run without removing the DPF and SCR until it warms ups some.
    Why did they not put a drain on the DEF tanks is another stupid overlook by the engineers, especially since DEF has a short life. If you go somewhere on a deployment you're screwed..

      I live in AZ, some counties require emissions tests for diesels and some don't . But you can register your truck in a different county and still live in another so you basically cheat the system. Example: if I lived in Phoenix I'd register my cummins in yavapai county with an address and don't ever have to worry about emissions. Tons of us do that but I live in county with no tests so thank God for that 😂😂
