Best Sheepshead Hooks?

  • Long standing debate, which hooks are the best for catching Sheepshead? I prefer a stout hook. I would rather have my line break than have my hooks bend out (I use 80 pound fluorocarbon). I noticed these Gamakatsu hooks bending out on snags and I lost a really nice fish due to the weaker metal. Gamakatsu does have a 4X Strong Octopus hook, which work really well. Which hooks do you prefer?
    April 4th, Temp mid 40's to mid 60's, wind NE10 slacking off throughout the day.
    Hooks used today: Gomakatsu Octopus 3/O Stock# 02413-25, Mustad Ultrapoint 2/0 Ref# 92677NPBLN
    16' Sundance Skiff
    30HP Mercury
    Shimano Torium 20HG - Shimano Trevala Jigging Rod 6'6" Heavy, Medium Fast
    Penn Fathom 25NLD2 - Shimano Trevala Jigging Rod 5'8" Heavy, Medium Fast.
    100 Pound Power Pro, 80 Pound Fluorocarbon Leader, 3 Ounce Egg Sinker
    Catch Mud Crabs under stuff, below the high tide line (WEAR GLOVES oyster cuts are nasty). Purple crabs with spots and striped legs are stone crabs and are illegal to possess.
    Catch Sea Urchins on pilings and other structure below the high tide line (WEAR GLOVES, the spines are non-venomous but can leave splinters and oyster cuts are nasty) I use a crab net.

    I have been using Bottom Sweeper Jigs, which have been very effective in the port area on Sheepshead, Black Drum, and Red Drum. Thinking about switching over to JawBreaker Jigs to support local business. I am also interested in trying out your rig, as your vids are a testament to its ability to land fish after fish! Nice work on the vids! Keep them coming!

    Are you dropping it down letting the weight sit on the bottom?? Never been sheepshead fishing before that's why I ask.

    • @offkilterfishing
      @offkilterfishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always drop it all the way to the bottom, two hooks gives the fish more to chew on and more chance to get a hook deep in the mouth.

    I like mustad ultra point 1/0 or gamakatsu 1/0 live bait hooks when I'm using smaller mud, rock or fiddler crabs.. I'll go a little bigger say 4/0 or so (on a bottom sweeper style jig)) if I'm using blue crab or urchins. Depends on the size of the bait for me!

      I totally agree, I was really attempting to show the difference that the hook thickness makes. I was flounder fishing with a large kahle hook last September and put on a sand flea to see if there were a few black drum in the area. I hooked a fish that pulled like a truck and bent the hook straight. Lesson learned.

    At this point you should know what the best hook is for hook up ratio can i ask which one it is? I've heard 100 people say 1,000 different things

    • @offkilterfishing
      @offkilterfishing  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@brett7794 it is not that simple. I use different hooks for different scenarios. I like 4/0 or 5/0 4X strong Gamakatsu for 2 hook Carolina rigs during the summer. Need heavy line and heavy combo to set hooks with these. 3/0-5/0 jawbreaker jigs work great year round. I use 3/0 owner hooks during the winter for smaller fish. I like mustad hooks also. It really depends on your setup and your style of fishing. Keep experimenting with what works best for you…
