    My personal favorite scene from DS9, is Nog's speech, where he convinces Sisko to let him apply for Starfleet. Aron Eisenberg (RIP) was absolutely spectacular.

      He really was. His performances later in the run, when he showed his range as a frightened young ensign during battle, and his PTSD after the battle, were incredibly well performed. He was such a special actor.

      It was a good series, not really the best trek by a mile though, as the writers threw out the principles that made Star Trek, Star Trek in order to make it easier to write for. It’s easy to write “humans in space” it’s hard to write “paragons in utopia”. It’s more popular to be “relatable” than to be “inspiring” and make it enjoyable to watch. They might as well have rename DS9 to Babylon 6 for all the connection it had to Star Trek.

      @julianmhall ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More about screen time than writing IMHO. As a bit part in TNG O'Brien never had the screen time he had as a /central/ character in DS9 - bar 'The Wounded' where he really showed his acting chops. Similarly Worf even though one of the bridge crew often lagged behind others - even Beverly Crusher and LaForge who weren't on the bridge.

    • @eliselambson7448
      @eliselambson7448 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@julianmhall I think that is a fair point that actual screen time had more of an impact than simply the writing. I just like that with O'Brien, they saw he had enough potential to keep around and decided to give him screen time for development in DS9. And though Worf was a more central character than O'Brien in TNG, I think the same held true for him, too. I loved how both O'Brien and Worf really got good character development and story arcs in DS9, thanks to that added screen time. And as such, they were both among my favorites, for sure!

    DS-9 showed us that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Technology may change but the basic human condition does not. It was realistic, the characters had their merits and their flaws. They were human...not cut and paste virtuous heroes. I point you to the episode where Sisko employs Garak to try and bring the Romulans into the war vs the Dominion. No spoilers forthcoming, but it was a revealing episode into how far a "good" person is willing to go depending on the stakes.

    • @Krahazik
      @Krahazik 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trick with TNG is that its a Federation ship with a Federation crew and the focus is most on said ship and crew. Not only that, its a ship on the edges of Federation space dealing mostly with other cultures who aren't members of the Federation. So we get a very narrow look at things. We don't really get to see civilian life in the Federation or much of Earth for that matter. Its like following the command crew of a US Navy Battleship and then trying to figure out what the rest of the US is like. Not much to go on.
      With DS9 we got to see more of the civilians and learn more about the areas surrounding the Federation. As a free port, and a non-Federation one at that, non-Federation Officers were coming and going all of the time. In a lot of ways, Sisco had a much harder command thrust upon him than commanding a starship.
      I love TNG and Picard. He was a great captain and a great diplomat. However, I am not sure Picard would have fared as well if he had been given command of DS9. Sisco and Picard were both diplomats, but different styles of diplomat. Sisco learned they style of diplomacy one needs for long duration type missions where your constantly exposed to the culture your assigned to and dealing with the civilians of that culture in addition to heads of state and such. Picard's type of diplomatic training and experience is more refined and short term, the kind use din entertaining high officials and heads of state for a night or a week and almost never having anything to do with the civilian population. Its that long mission style of diplomacy and training that did Sisco so well in dealing with the various cultures that lived and visited the station.

    One of the things I loved about DS9 was the fact that many of it's episodes didn't end on a particularly upbeat note. Such episodes served to remind audiences that, while some species within the Star Trek Universe had managed to turn their worlds into a Utopia, others were still having to endure growing pains to achieve such a state. For example, in the Season One Episode "Duet," Major Kiera's investigation of a visiting Cardassian to the station leads her to realize that not all Cardassians are brutal oppressors. Some, like the Cardassian in this episode, was pretending to be a very infamous Gaul (The Butcher of Galatep) in order to force the Cardassian Government to publicly acknowledge their war crimes against the Bajorans in an effort to atone for the role he played in the Occupation. After seeing just how remorseful this man really was, Kira begins to realize that each individual (whether they be Cardassian or Bajoran) needs to be judged based on their own actions rather than condemned for simply being a part of a larger group of people with a less-than-perfect history. This is made all the more apparent when, after being released from confinement, the Cardassian is killed in cold blood by a Bajoran man who has strong negative feelings toward the Cardassian race for their occupied of his planet over the past 50 years. The final lines in the episode after the Cardassian dies goes as follows: Major Kira: "Why did you do that? he wasn't Gaul Darheal!" Bajoran Man: "He was Cardassian--that's reason enough." Major Kira: NO--no it's not."
    While I admire Gene Rodenberry's efforts to promote a future where everyone lives in peace, and everyone is afforded the opportunity to pursue what makes them happy and fulfilled, the fact is that such a future takes time to achieve, and it has to come after we, as humans, have gone through some very necessary, and often times arduous, learning experiences. The producers of DS9 understood this fact very well, and they managed to make the whole Star Trek Franchise feel more relatable with an entry in the canon that was both nuanced and poignant in its approach to showing us just how complicated and messy life really is within the broader universe.

      What makes that moment better is Kassidy who - paraphrasing here - tells him "get the hell over it. We don't betray who we are or our ancestors when we depict a fictional version where people weren't racist twats." That really made me like the episode even more (I was a sucker for the Vic Fontaine episodes, I just loved the setting ...). It reminded you that "yep, shit, just a few decades back, someone like Sisko would have been treated incredibly unfairly because of his skin color", but at the same time, gave a big fat no to victim mentality and irrational grudges for "sins of the fathers".
      Come on, a star ship captain from the 24th century being THAT salty about what happened more than 300 years ago would be pretty ridiculous. It would be like I as a German would be mad at Sweden for devastating parts of Germany during the 30-year-war (1618-48).

      @@givmi_more_w9251 I love Vic and the episode so much!!! Loved how they turned a chill hangout game and added a multiplayer co-op boss they had to fight so that it doesn't become boring but I get why Sisko is salty. He, out of everyone, had personal experience of being in the past and experiencing the prejudice. Far Beyond the Stars was in season 6. Then he gets a another flash of being Benny Russell in a padded room in Shadows and Symbols early in the 7th season. So for him, it wasn't a couple of centuries ago.

    I do welcome the serialized stories, but too many shows that started with a winning formulaic structure decide they need to go all out on the serials and thus kill the magic they had grown (see: Castle). There's a balance in there, and I feel that DS9 was pretty close to the perfect blend.

    I guess you could say one of my favorite changes to the formula is a subset of the "Serialized Storylines"... and that is the scope of character backstories. In the monster-of-the-week format, aspects of a character's past might play a part in the immediate story, then almost never heard of again. In DS9's formula there's a certain level of object permanence, the character backstory implicitly defines the story and everything after - like Julian being genetically engineered

    What I loved was that Commander/Captain Sisko, Major/Colonel/Commander Kira, etc were not Diplomats or Lovers but Fighters. They were Badasses. It's obvious with Sisko, Kira, Worf, and Dax. However, eventually they ALL become Badasses. In TNG, they had the formula to make Riker a fighting badass against the Borg but dropped the ball there. Even Picard was allowed badassery until First Contact. DS9 gave us more real ideas on how certain people handle issues.
