I rewatched the episode where he put Terri in a coma. Yes, he had major issues (mostly control and anger). Yes, abuse is wrong. But he didn’t mean to intentionally do that. And I’m not defending him by saying what he did was right, but the guy had a lot of issues and accounted out on emotions. Maybe before he came back to Degrassi he received psychiatric help to help stabilize him. The bullying was out of hand. I understand the anger initially, but it kept going and going until it was too late and he snapped. What did they expect would happen?
I honestly have to disagree. If that incident was the FIRST time anything like that happened with Terri and him then I could kind of see that point but he had hit her before and showed abusive in multiple forms. I see your point but the history of him being abusive was totally there.
@@_ann1313 Truth is, I never cared about Terri, at all. She was nothing more than a plot device after she left the show and after the whole school shooting, she has been never brought up again. It was like she was a fart, and that’s how I’ll remember her as. As a fart
I hate that they are doing this to try and create sympathy for Rick but I’m not a fan of how people thought they were being heroic by provoking an incident. There’s better ways to go about things than just beating a kid down until he decides to snap and takes thing further than they should have.
Prior to Rick Murray, Terri MacGregor never had a boyfriend. In a deleted scene from “Mercy Street” Alex and Marco told Raditch that Rick was a danger to women due to the fact that Rick’s anger is what almost killed Terri due to the fact that she hit her head on a rock and went into a coma as a result she transferred to a private school. There was a reason why Emma started the yellow ribbon campaign is to ostracize Rick but it ended up turning into bullying
Despite many ppl missed what the writers were trying to do here, I admire it. There’s a reason Sean was there at the end, though we don’t see much of him all season. Rick's character is one that we know has done permanent harm to another human being (Teri), and we can't believe he's here in school after doing so. He is bullied relentlessly because no one believes he is capable of change. Rick is confronted by the one person who he can actually intimately relate to, and he doesn't even know it. We we have been following Sean since day 1 of this show - yes he has disappointed us but we have seen his heart, we know despite his flaws andd his past that he can be trusted. Yet the only reason Sean is here is because he too caused permanent damage to another human being! Years have passed since then and Sean has grown into someone that we know while flawed, IS capable of being good... we are meant to ask ourselves if Rick, who is still a child, was so "bad" that he was beyond redemption. His peers thought so, and now he is dead so we will never have the answer
My god, I've watched so many times that this feels like it should have been obvious... They were just so good at making Sean likeable while making Rick so hateable...
I could see why ? That everyone is bullied Rick for what he did to Terri, but Rick didn't deserve to be treated badly all the time for his regret and his mistakes. Because he didn't do anything to other students
@@nytanykoalhe definitely didn't beat her within an inch of her life 😂 he grabbed her hand when she asked him to let her go until the force of him pulling her the opposite direction then suddenly letting go caused her to fall back and hit her head on a rock. All of this madness, all of this suffering, all of this misery, all of this because most students in Degrassi couldn't let go of what Rick did to Terri. Instead of trying to forgiving him and understand Rick, the students all held onto their grudge against him like a blanket or a drug. They bullied him to he point that he snapped and started this school shooting. The students should have known that this school has a zero tolerance of bullying. But because of their selfish desire for vengeance, Rick is dead and Jimmy is paralyzed from the waist down and bound to a wheelchair, probably for the rest of his life. And the Principal didn't help matters because he was pressured by Terri's friends into letting Rick get bullied. JT came off as an asshole in this mess, laughing at Rick's expense and treating him like he's some psycho who deserves to be locked up or humiliated. All Rick wanted as an education and some respect. But the students treated him like a psycho without hearing him out.
literally how do yall sympathize with him. Like he had it coming in my eyes. Especially how much terri meant to Paige and how much paige meant to spinner. although i do think once paige and spinner broke up, the plot kinda got lost. I don’t feel bad for him though, this is the exact treatment abusers deserve
Like most abusers rick would nearly kill terri then apologize then do it again then apologize again then do it again and so on. I think i saw a similar situation in degrassi classic. Abuser maybe truly sorry (or at least very convincing) yet they refused to get help or stop themselves in anyway of doing it again. Still they expect the girls to stay with them anyway. Who would believe the abuser is truly sorry? More importantly, who would believe the abuser would never do it again? You decide.
The difference is though, the writers had the character himself acknowledge that he what he did was wrong and that he was clearly trying to get help, he was going to therapy. He was trying to get help but for some reason out of his control he was put back in Degrassi for everyone to exacerbate his mental issues.
wasn't it his choice to return to the 1 school he wouldn't be welcomed? He went after those who gave 2nd chance instead of his bullies. It's interesting to see a shift in the fandom's general opinion about Rick. During the release of these episodes, most seemed to sympathize with his situation after the coma incident. Nowadays, it's the opposite. Most people don't feel sympathy for him or even go as far to say that he deserved the constant that harassment he received. I wonder what that says about our human nature?
That’s a lie. All I see are comments feeling sorry for him. And a lot of them are years old. Either way, if people don’t feel sorry for him, then they don’t feel sorry for him. He’s 100% deserved it. Not to mention he brought it on himself. It says a lot about you that you care more about him being harassed than you do him being an abuser.
@DavidKen878 Wrong. I care about both parts equally, as they are both equally wrong, deserved, or not. I'm simply making an observation. Also, I ended with a question rather than a statement in my original post, so you couldn't have known what I was initially thinking without first making assumptions. As far as the Fandom goes, I was talking about the fanbase at large, not exclusively this comments section, even tho the top comment supports my initial statement. Seems to me you choose what you wanna see to support your argument.

I think the fact that there is any sympathy for him at all speaks to how well the actor portrayed him. They could have hired someone completely unlikable and one dimensional but they chose someone that you wouldn't normally think of as an abuser. I think that one decision gave the character depth and why this whole situation is conflicting to watch. You don't wanna feel bad for him because of the awful things he's done, but because he appears so friendly and unassuming, you can't help but feel for him when he's getting all of this humiliation.
The only two people who didn't deserve any harsh cruelty, physical damage, and treatment were Terri and Toby. And if we're being honest, Emma started all of this crap, Radish escalated it by not doing anything, then Jimmy, Jey & Spinner morphed the situation into the tragedy it became. I never felt bad for Rick, but you don't push mentally unstable people into a corner.
Rick was a vulnerable narcissist who, instead of moving on and going to another school, chose to stay and force others to like / forgive him. That's not how you seek forgiveness or redemption. I don't condone bullying, but these are kids, and they are only acting the way kids react. It's also obvious the writers, much like everyone did at the time, equated the Columbine shootings with bullying. Which, for the record, was an excuse, as both kids had severe issues outside of "bullying", and were essentially neglected by their parents and acting out.
This happened to a kid at my school, but it was a bit worse. The only difference is that he caught on quickly, and handled it in the best way possible: by suing for damages! A great lawyer once said, "If a poor man punches you, punch back, but if a rich man pinches you, let him do it and bill him later."
Everyone is talking about Rick, but let's talk about classic Emma here. She hates Rick (obviously), then she does this whole thing at school where they protest domestic abuse so the entire school goes against Rick. Now the entire school hates him and bullies him, and she's upset about that. When she's the one who started it?!
I just watched radish as a teacher back in degrassi Jr high. Thank you TH-cam. He graded the exact same paper two different grades before realizing it was the same paper. Stereotype his students. Name calling his own students. How dow does a teacher like that become principal?
This is why Stefan Brogren who played Simpson should've became principal he even suspended Emma for voicing her opinion about gmo food eventhough after she told him she would stop
I honestly thought that Rick didn’t deserve this crap UNTIL I actually found out what he did to Terri. Let’s just say, I ain’t providing any sympathy for him anymore.
Im honestly suprised so many people are justifying his bullying. Like, yes, it would have been better for him to just go to a new school overall, but it was HIS school. Yes, he beat his girlfriend, but he was trying to change. No, that doesn't justify HIM bringing the gun to school, but him bringing the gun doesn't justify the bullying. Its one thing to socially isolate someone for not trusting them; Forcing them away from you in all situations is a little more extreme; but actively taking opportunities to make their life hell when they're just going about their day is just plain bullying. People justifying it act like they would do the same (you would have to have a lot of anger to see someone going about their day and seek out to harass them)
Yeah I think Rick was kinda smart for staying inside the car. Spinner should’ve just left his ass alone. Do you really think Terri wanted to see Rick’s face at the hospital after what he did to Terri?
as much as he deserved his ass kicked honestly it sucked seeing folks being turned just like him , I know I would of done the same …but to be just like what he did to Terri nah …he needed to go to a different school or homeschool for sure . He hit terri, put her in a coma the principal was like no one put any one in a coma and mr simpson was like we cant tell details well spinner and paige were there so obviously they know what happened besides rick. Idk if rick was angry cuz his dad wasnt around or what but really he should have gotten help for his anger issues and went to a different school. Rick going back to degrassi was a mistake on his part. Ricks mom ddint know the truth even if she did she proably wouldnt believe it. Rick got his karma when everyone bullied him and hated him. The only time i felt bad for him a little bit is when emma told him she pittied him and told him to get a clue.
Rick gets alot of needlessly strong hate in the comment section.. People tend to forget that he's supposed to be an immature teen, who got caught up in his emotions when he accidentally, yes accidentally put Terri into the hospital. Then he returns to school to get this level of bullying!? Rick was abusive yeah, but not to the extreme people are saying he was. Not enough to warrant this level of treatment. Harassed the kid so much he mentally snapped and sought out ending the lives of the people who harassed him. Even in this state, couldn't look people in the eyes when he shot.
I actually thought it was brave of him to go back. When he hurt Teri he probably thought he killed her at first and that was a big eye opener for him. I wouldn’t have been surprised if he tried to kill himself with his dad’s gun. It must have taken a lot to get the help he needed and confront the people he hurt, he didn’t try to runaway from his problems and wanted to make things right, but all of that came undone because everyone chose to give in to anger, fear, and hate and look what happened. They didn’t have to forgive him right away, just leave him alone and keep an eye on him. No matter what, never give in to anger and hate.

The way people act towards this is so annoying. The problem with his situation is that people started out upset about Terri, then random people that never even knew her realized that he was just an easy and socially acceptable target. That's when it turned into a problem.
Rick was a messed up delinquent teen. Domestic abuse. Some say the coma was an accident. Others say it wasn't. Either way the abuse were not accidents. The coma is the result of rick abusive behavior. Terri was lucky she survived. Rick was no innocent. Some say he deserved what he got. Others say he needed help. Though i would not have bullied him, i wouldn't of defended him either. Rick was no innocent. Rick should of moved away and start over else where. Instead he insisted in returning to degrassi. What did he think was going to happen? How did he think he was going to be treated? Did he think that nothing would of change? That his classmates were going to pretend he didn't almost kill his girlfriend? Then he brings a gun, not to shoot all who bullied him, but to shoot what few friends who actually gave him the 2nd chance he so craved. All because of what he "over heard". Friends who believed he changed yet he was quick to believe whatever he "over hears" rather than just ask or give benifit of doubt.

Maybe I’m wrong, but why did the mother allow her son to be in school with all this happening? I get money may be tight but as a parent if my kid ever did this I know hes gonna have a target on his back, and from what was shown here, thats not even the craziest that can be done, And sometimes not even the kids in school to, the parents or siblings will definitely plan something to really hurt the kid in multiple ways, I would rather go broke then see my kid beaten and traumatized, Mind You I’m not sympathetic to Rick, I just don’t under why the mom didn’t try another school.
No she didn’t. Rick never told his mom what was happening they show it at the end that he lied to his mom and let her think he was being accepted perfectly fine.
From what little is shown of the mom she’s a bit naive and unable to see when her son is lying to make her feel better.
From what I rmr his mom wanted him to go to a different school, but Rick insisted on going back to bc he liked it at Degrassi and wanted to prove ppl he changed.
you know i have to be honest i think its admirable that rick wanted to show people at degrassi he had changed and the bullying was wrong but the reality is it was too soon it had only been a few months i think the wounds were still fresh i just think it would of been safer for rick to be at another school and maybe wait a few years and then tried to reach out to the people at degrassi like wheels did and also i think the reason mr. raditch was transfered to another school was because the board felt that if he hadn't let rick back to degrassi this whole thing would not have happened and i kind of agree sometime
Yeah but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the first time he’s shown he changed right? Wasn’t he saying that before putting Terri in a coma?

Nah they been picking on Rick
I rewatched the episode where he put Terri in a coma. Yes, he had major issues (mostly control and anger). Yes, abuse is wrong. But he didn’t mean to intentionally do that. And I’m not defending him by saying what he did was right, but the guy had a lot of issues and accounted out on emotions. Maybe before he came back to Degrassi he received psychiatric help to help stabilize him. The bullying was out of hand. I understand the anger initially, but it kept going and going until it was too late and he snapped. What did they expect would happen?
I guess bullying in Degrassi is basically the students hobby.
As a fart
He did mention therapy before
I hate that they are doing this to try and create sympathy for Rick but I’m not a fan of how people thought they were being heroic by provoking an incident. There’s better ways to go about things than just beating a kid down until he decides to snap and takes thing further than they should have.
Like?? What did they think was gonna happen? It’s like continuously beating an animal into a corner and then crying “I had no idea!” when it attacks.
Everyone in school bullied him. Wow! Terri must have been extremely popular in school
She was since she hung out with Paige and Paige the popular girl
Prior to Rick Murray, Terri MacGregor never had a boyfriend. In a deleted scene from “Mercy Street” Alex and Marco told Raditch that Rick was a danger to women due to the fact that Rick’s anger is what almost killed Terri due to the fact that she hit her head on a rock and went into a coma as a result she transferred to a private school. There was a reason why Emma started the yellow ribbon campaign is to ostracize Rick but it ended up turning into bullying
It's satisfying to aee Rick get bulled and threatened because of what he did to Terri.
I’m so glad someone understood what the writers were trying to convey.
Excellent point
Ephraim Ellis was one of the best actors on Degrassi
Yes he was. He and Mike Lobel both could have given lessons.
I could see why ? That everyone is bullied Rick for what he did to Terri, but Rick didn't deserve to be treated badly all the time for his regret and his mistakes. Because he didn't do anything to other students
You wonder why these kids end up picking a gun with these type of treatments.

This is why you can't just believe women's abuse stories you have the nerve to lie when we've all seen the show 🙄 😂
All of this madness, all of this suffering, all of this misery, all of this because most students in Degrassi couldn't let go of what Rick did to Terri.

Jimmy for what he "over heard" and emma for rejecting him. toby would of been caught in crossfire. Sean didn't even take part in the bullying.

Who cares? He put a girl in a coma, never apologized to her, never faced any consequences, and then forced her to go to another school.
Exactly.
This episode proves if you can hit a woman and feel powerful then you can definitely take the treatment at school for your actions
Is not so great when the bullied is you right?
