    We are a travel couple, looking for a non-mainstream life of living aboard a boat and cruising in the Caribbean/Bahamas in Winter, and the Great Lakes in Summer. Working when we can to fill the cruising kitty. We have sold everything we own, and we now own a cruising yacht. We have chosen to do this voyaging in a powerboat/motor vessel, instead of the popular sailing route.
    Our mission is to help inspire people to live their dreams earlier in life, instead of waiting until retirement. So often retirement dreams are dashed by health issues or other unforeseen later life circumstances. If you have a dream, then dream, plan, and do it now. We hope to make you smile, and spark the yearning in your heart for fulfilling your dreams.

    I had a similar issue. We installed 2 new yanmar engines They are 54 hp natural diesels, if they were turbocharged they would be 175 hp. They were a perfect fit
    For our V8 engines, same length. Our costs were about $12,000 each. Our top speed for our 40’ boat went from 24 knots to 12 knots top speed and 18 knots to 8 knots cruise speed. Fuel burn was cut in half. Saved 2 thousand pounds. Same setup on a trawler. You will still have two engine safety Those old diesels are tired
    Good luck with your adventures

    To show you how things have changed in the Bahamas, the first time I dove on the Sapona, back in 1987, we actually took a couple of lobsters from there. There wasn't another boat in sight. We were there for two weeks and we only met one other cruising boat the entire trip. And, we both got searched by the Coast Guard and the Bahamas Defense Force, at the same time, because they said that just the fact we were close by each other like that was suspicious in those days! Hope things work out with your engine! The idea of having to do major work on one of our engines is about the only thing I ever worry about with our boat. Enjoyed your video!

    Hi Sheldon
    I think you may have a crack in your water outlet manifold the water is being sucked into a cyindliner this creates more pressure Hence the knocking.
    I would advise not to run this at all under load this will blow your engine.
    Watching from the UK. David

    Hey there, I would have to say it is an injector knock. Put engine in gear and then loosen each injector fuel line, one at a time until the knock disappears. The knock sounds like it is one cylinder. To bad you don't have a cat computer hook-up, it would tell you immediately. Best of luck

  • @Adogsmate4267
    @Adogsmate4267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Sheldon and Cindy, you are on your way to finding the problem checking the fuel delivery and injector replacements. Having now ruled that out, it's time to look at the mechanics of it all. Bryan mentioned a carbon build-up which is quite possible given the low revs during long passage, there could be two reasons why that might be a thing, build-up on the pistons themselves, or on the back of the valves, check by taking off the inlet manifold and look at the backs of the valves.
    Some of this can be horrific. When this happens, there is a chance that a couple of valves are burnt. Carbon preventing them from proper closure leading to a burn. No white smoke, might rule out that. It would help if we knew at what space in the engine the knock is occurring. We need that stethoscope. To look at things in a cynical light, it could be broken piston's, check for excessive blow by, remove the engine oil filler cap while running, check that blow by with the other engine. I would rule that out, two piston's breaking is not normal but could be. There could be big end trouble, seemingly worse when in gear and a slight metallic clanking could support that. I think you need to compression test Sheldon. It could also be a head gasket, did we plane the heads when the head was off last? For further investigation, we need to know exactly where the knock is, upper or lower or maybe the combustion chamber itself. Keen to help you guys, need more information. On a happier note, nice to see you healthy and well and getting on with it. It's so beautiful where you are living right now, loved your video.

    Hi Sheldon, not sure if you have already had your engine repaired, but... It's a long shot, I have run into carbon build up on the top of pistons 3 times throughout my career, and the nice thing about it, it's usually an easy fix. All three times I thought the engine was terminal due to the knocking, but before tearing the engine apart, I would, with a warm engine, idling, slowly dribble water into the intake, sometimes as much as a liter. Increasing engine RPM and volume of water was needed on one occasion, again, slowly introduce the water. The engine will run a little rough as you do it, I have found the "steam-cleaning" effect will often loosen the carbon off the top of the piston and send it out the exhaust. Oh and we love your videos! One day we hope to do the same.

      @@SearchingforCShels "Eric the car guy" demonstrates the process on a car on TH-cam, your situation would be slightly different because of the lack of "vacuum" at your intake, being a diesel, but it works. Maybe run it by the next mechanic you have work on the engine, it's a quick thing to do, and if done slowly, will not hurt the engine at all. 😎

    When you put the engine into gear, that knocking sounded like a broken piston rod at the crankshaft, or the bearing that connects the piston end to the crankshaft. It's hard to tell in the video if its top or bottom of the engine. Or a transmission problem?? I still think it's a head gasket issue with the color of white smoke you're getting. The new tender looks great! Hope you get things sorted. Stay safe.

      You can do a test on your oil if you have a oil extraction system, try and get a cup full of oil in a glass jar from the lowest part of your oil pan if possible. Let it settle for a while and see if any metallic shavings are settled to the bottom. That will let you know if it's a serious issue or not with your knocking noise. Good luck!

    Love your adventures but what is going on with the boat, no solution yet? I checked you out on Facebook to see if there was progress on your engines but. Didn’t see any.

    How are you liking the air fryer/micro onboard?

  • @williammoyle4486

    Yes, could be worse, could have been stuck in Canada for the past two winters 😳

      Very true. Sorry you have to endure those winters. You will soon escape. 😉

    Shel if you throttle up the Eng in neutral and bak it of does it make the nocking sound out of gear souns to me like a bad rod bearing or piston pin

    • @SearchingforCShels
      @SearchingforCShels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t reved it up far, but the knock isn’t as noticeable in neutral.

    Its not head gasket but either valve or piston failure with the audio hard knock.
    Don’t ruin the whole engine but leak down test and compression test.
    Any blow back thru oil fill for ring failure. 5k fix now 30 if you keep running it.

      @SearchingforCShels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that assessment. Values look ok from a cursory inspection with the valve covers off. Hope it's not a piston.

    Actually, if you're eating fish, you're not vegan. You're *pescatarian* ...
    I'd try some red meat, since humans aren't biologically suited to a plant-based diet. If we were, the enamel on our teeth would be at least a tenth of an inch thick, but you do you~!
    Good to see you guys posting again!

    Didn't you just replace the head gasket on the starboard side ? Is this a rerun video ?

    • @SearchingforCShels
      @SearchingforCShels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does feel like a rerun doesn't it. We replaced the head gaskets on the port engine not the stbd.

    What's the verdict on that Toshiba microwave/air fryer? Thumbs up, mid-way or down?

    • @SearchingforCShels
      @SearchingforCShels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We really like it. However, we have never used a real air fryer so we can't compare to those stand alone units. To be honest this Toshiba replaced a Samsung we had bought 3-4 years ago and was a piece of garbage. The Toshiba is amazing on all fronts compared to that Samsung.

    Sounds like its thrown a con rod bearing, clear knocking under load with unburnt fuel exiting exhaust, these do not have cylinder liners, if the bore is damaged its a re bore with all new pistons, dont run it like this, the two main problems with this engine are no cylinder liners hence its a re bore and the crank bearings are half the size they should be, its quite shocking, dont thrash them

    • @SearchingforCShels
      @SearchingforCShels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. I really hope you are wrong about the rod bearing. lol 😜

      @wongerwonging8109 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SearchingforCShels me too, its possible you can raise engine by building a frame and chain hoist and sort any problem yourself with access to underneath if you really wanted to work to a budget and you will gain great knowledge on your engines 😉

    What happens when they leave a big boat for 2 years. Should have had the storage facility run the engines once a month. Could have docked the boat and lived in Florida. But these two are obsessed with Canadian health insurance. Ran to Canada. Florida was open the whole time. I have travel insurance when I’m out of the country for extended times. It cost me 150 a month. Includes COVID illnesses and catastrophic. Minor stuff I go to a local clinic for 40 dollars. Medicines in pharmacy are 10-50 dollars at most. Between the repairs and storage now an engine. That’s more expensive than whatever medical expenses they incurred.
