    Great work, June. One tiny fix to a lyric on Danny boy "summer's in the meadow." Teeny tiny detail that doesn't even matter in this context. Thanks for all your work and for posting!

    I'M SO GLAD YOU INCLUDED THE DUCK BIT. Been trying to figure that out for a long time.

    • @JuneLee
      @JuneLee  8 ปีที่แล้ว +109

      I usually finish transcriptions for short videos like this within a day. Bigger projects, such as a full transcription, can take weeks and even months. The process includes putting sections on repeat, slowing down, metronome, etc.

      Thank you so much June Lee for your work! June, do you use a specific program to slow down the tracks? I currently use "Transcribe!" do you use it to or something different? Transcribing is really hard for me, but I completely understand why its important to do. (I also love you even transcribed the "duck's chord" too, like a true transcription master! lol)

    Loved the duck falling with the wind as he sings that the sun refuses to shine as he's wearing a t-shirt while the temp's probably about 2°C. He's kind of surrounded and habited in the same time and place.

  • @oscarelmholt
    @oscarelmholt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Excellent work! It would be interesting to see P.Y.T. notated from a 4/4 point of view all the way through, as the drums have got a back beat kind of approach across the metric modulations. Would it make sense, you think?

    • @brendonhester331
      @brendonhester331 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Totally thought the same thing about the backbeat, but am I right in saying that if you were to notate it all in 4/4, rather than change time signatures, you would have to change tempos at each one of the metric modulations?

    • @iJiggsy
      @iJiggsy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Oscar Elmholt, I think it would be easier to notate it that way, but not everyone is aware that you can play a back beat with different subdivisions than just duple and triple, so June's interpretation is the clearest for pedagogical purposes, though if I were actually learning any of these parts, as a performer I would prefer just practicing the tempo modulation and seeing what subdivision is implied underneath (i.e., "quintuplet" or "septuplet").
      I have some compositions that take the approach you're alluding to, and some where I notated it out like June did. Just very different schools of thought, I'd say.

    • @馬鍬陸
      @馬鍬陸 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      + Oscar Elmholt Exactly. Rather than writing 7/16 and the like, it would probably make a little more sense to group that section into 16th note septuplets or something, so as not to lose the overall pulse (if one can even follow it, haha!). +Machado Mijiga I actually think it even makes more sense from an educational point of view. Since people don't typically read those rhythms in this way, why not expose learners to it with a good and comprehensive example like this one? Also, if one wouldn't know about at least the basics of that kind of notation (tuplets etc.), Jacob Collier might be a bit hefty to start studying :D

    Thank you, once again, Jacob, for your composing and for letting us hear performances of your compositions. And thank you, June, for all your hard work in transcribing. But what I'd like to know is this. The complexity of Jacob's arrangements shows that -- for *most* of the notes, at any rate -- the performers must've learned, then performed, what he *wrote*. What written material has he given you, for you to base your transcriptions on? It would be bizarre if you had to work out, purely from the audio of such a complex arrangement, notation which he knew all along.

    As someone as good as you are at analysis and transcription, how do you rank JC's abilities as a harmonist and arranger? To me he seems like maybe the most advanced there is.

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I truly think that JS Bach would be agog at what he could learn from Jacob. Not saying Jacob's more talented; he has been able to stand on the shoulders of a whole series of giants who stood on the shoulders of Bach et al. But someone with Jacob's passion and facility and stamina comes along VERY rarely, and usually they come packaged with some pretty unappealing personality traits. Seems like there's nothing to see like that here.

    Can someone explain what the #15 means exactly? You would also say b9 but it makes more sense in this case right? The point I am at is, that I am beginning to unterstand how extensions work but altered extensions are still partially a mystery to me. Maybe someone could give me some insight? And also why these work so well

    I offer a two-step counterchallenge that will hopefully take some more time.
    1. Look up an artist by the name of Cryptovolans on BandCamp, and transcribe something from the album "Global Understanding.
    2. Use all of your knowledge of Collierisms to create your own arrangement of whatever you transcribe, and post it here.
