Thanks Larry and welcome back. Hope you are doing better. Yes just another form of natures dehydrator. Sitting under my shed with a light wind blowing across would have done the same. This is a bit more controlled. Thanks for watching, Gary
Oh yeah! That is a gorgeous piece of work! It came out beautifully even thought it was wet. The finish you used certainly compliments the wood! You did a fantastic job! Bravo!
Stunning piece of wood as soon as we caught sight of it Gary but boy, did you make it sing on the lathe. That grain & colour are absolutely beautiful, couple that with a shape that does the wood justice & a superb finish, WOW. Any further words, if one could find them, would be pretty much meaningless, just sit back & let the wood speak for itself in the hands of a Master Craftsman. I feel privileged to have been able to sit back & watch this video & a little less pain in this old body, so thank you my friend. Don from South Aust..
Thank you very much Don for all you kind words. I do hope this helped with your pain and also that it does get better for you. Take care my friend, Gary
Very nice. A few quick tips if I may. I use a foam sanding block when sanding with sheet sand paper to get a smoother finish but more importantly to stop burning my fingers. I have also stopped buying sand paper and I'm forever committed to Abranet, which is far superior in my opinion, and lasts forever. If I need to dry a piece quickly, I have had great success using the CONVECTION oven in our kitchen. I set it on the drying cycle at about 120 Deg F and give the piece an hour on that setting. I let it cool and then add more cycles but only if needed. I have only once needed more than two cycles and never had a crack. Montana Wood Art, Bozeman MT.
Thank you and thanks for all the tips. I have been sanding this way for years and did it on a daily basis working as a wood patternmaker. I guess I can feel the shape better that way. But I certainly am willing to try anything. I have not tried Abranet and have been wanting to give it a try. Our kitchen oven has a convection setting but I do not think it will go low enough. And it does not have a drying cycle. Perhaps your oven is made just for convection cooking? Lots of great tips! Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Bruce, I sure enjoyed turning this one. I feel like I am cheating using the Polycrylic. It is so easy to use and the Acks Abrasive Paste brought it to another level. Take care, Gary
Thank you very much. Wow 8 blanks all tucked away. That will be lots of fun to finish up. I really should do that with some of my Walnut. I have a lot off large pieces slabbed up. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Gil, how can you not love Walnut. I have 2 Walnut boards I used for a high school project in 1963 that I think I need to make something out of. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful bowl, Gary. Beautiful wood and fantastic finish - almost too good. It almost looks artificial. That wood is like something I've never seen before. Take care. Bill
Thank you Bill, I was happy with it before I used the Acks paste but I figured I would see what it would do. Holding it and looking at it you can see the life in it. We have a lot of English Walnut here. A few years ago I could have gotten a few dump truck loads of it. Family members in laws took down a English Walnut orchard and there was more wood burned than you can imagine. Take care, Gary
Thank you Curtis, our friends had to have the tree taken down because it had died. I am so glad I took most of it instead of having it turned into firewood. Thanks for watching, Gary
That green wood turned so beautifully. When you hit the dark parts it looked like you were turning chocolate...humm...now I'm hungry. LOL! I too like the shop sounds and your narrative over music. Looking forward to next Friday's video.
Thank you Tony! Wow a pickup load of Black Walnut...now that would be nice. We have plenty around here and it is a matter of being in the right spot at the right time. Take care, Gary
Thank you Leslie, this wood is so pretty and all of it that I have turned has been. I have lots more to turn so I hope it stays that way. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful Work. I have seen Rick turns drying box it looks good. I turn dry wood so don't need to dry my turnings. Love your work It is always so beautiful
Gary, what a beautiful piece. The wood/pattern is amazing and the finish is super as well. Thanks for all the hints, ideas and great commentary provided; they are definitely good to have in the toolbox of knowledge!
Thank You Gary...I do not know if true or not> The hard dry wagon wheel center hub would be ruff turned large. Buried in it's own woodchips in a cool dark place. One diameter inch of wood = One year wait for a strong, hard, crack free wagon wheel hub ?...Very nice turning Gary. Example of how to approach wet wood with positive results....TM
Thank you tuffy, and I bet it is a true story. Maybe I should make a wagon wheel...I still have all my spoke shaves from work😄 Thanks for watching, Gary

Yes this is what English Walnut looks like here. I have turned it from a orchard of English Walnut as well and I could have gotten as many truck loads as I wanted. That was 2 years ago and I have a lot of it left as well. From this batch I have turned 3 bowls thin and none have cracked. They warped a little but I welcome that. I prefer doing this over twice turned bowls. I find not so exciting to come back and turn the same bowl a second time. But I suppose if I was selling them it might be different. Try your Walnut thin but make one of those boxes and I think you will be happy.
Thank you Billy, it was a real shame the tree had to be cut down. But our friends were very happy that I got the wood and will be making things from it. I have them the last one I did and they loved it. Take care, Gary
Gary, it's beautiful! I missed the type of wood. It was probably at the beginning when I was doing the CC button and liking it. Thank you for the shop sounds and talking and no music! I have always used that finish. It a nice looking one plus easy to clean up lol. Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie
Thank you Vickie, sorry I may have not mentioned it but it is English Walnut. I added it to the description because I did not remember saying what it was. I like the shops as well except when my air compressor comes on but that rarely happens. Thanks for watching, Gary
A beautiful finished piece. I never would have expected that seeing the lump of wood you started with..lol it's gorgeous coloring and shine is amazing.
Thank you Nean, I like that a lump of wood is what it was for sure. I have some way bigger lumps of the same and I just think a huge bowl does not have any place around here but I still want to turn one. Thanks for watching, Gary

OH MY, the grain on that bowl! So. Pretty.
Thank you Nan, it is a shame the tree died but it left a lot of wood to remember it by.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I like the shape, Gary. You can call your box a Poor Man's Dehydrator, the same principle. Great job, take care, Larry
Thanks Larry and welcome back. Hope you are doing better. Yes just another form of natures dehydrator. Sitting under my shed with a light wind blowing across would have done the same. This is a bit more controlled.
