Thank you Dave. For sure the time we spend turning it deserves the best sanding and finishing we can do. Then it all comes together. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Dennis. I am sure you will find them very useful. I will be using them over a lacquered piece just to give it more depth. Video next week. Thanks for watching and hope you have a very Happy New Year, Gary
I don't think anyone could ask for a better breakdown of the finishing technique shown in this video. The step by step breakdown could not have been made any clearer than what you have provided in this video Gary. I think it was a delightful piece of wood with lovely strong clear grain & the abrasive past & the polish have provided a superb finish. Stay safe & well in 2020 & I look forward to what you have to show us during the year. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

What a great job sharing this technique. I do appreciate yur videos in both making and explaining the process of what you are making and how you do it. Thank you so much.
Tom here; Great intel; I've made my own abrasive pastes; one with pumice and one with diatomaceaous (sp?) earth. Beeswax and mineral oil are the carriers. That being said, YOUR bowl came out spectacular!!

Gary, I've been using Ack's products for at least a year and love them. It was great to see how someone else applies and buffs them. I picked up a few tips. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year!
Acks makes a great product. @TanyaBcherwoodturning has been using this method for quite some time. The finish is beautiful. Great video. Happy New Year.
Gary, once again you have proven to be a wonderful instructor. I used Ack's for the first time on two projects and I got the best finish I've ever done. Thanks once again for sharing your experience and wisdom!
Thank you so much for sharing your insights. I've been using Acks for a while, but, based on your video here, I have not been using the abrasive paste quite properly. I wasn't continuing to polish until the paper towel basically came away clean, or until the grit was absolutely and totally gone. I have never quite been able to get the shine I wanted from my pieces, but I'm hopeful now that with more effective use and working of the abrasive paste, that I'll be able to get the results I'm looking for.
Thank you Jon. For sure you need to do it till no grit comes off on the paper towel. I switch to a new on to make sure. I bet you will have great success now. Gary
I love how you explain things, Gary. The Ack's paste is awesome stuff to work with, but I don't usually do it justice. lol Still working on that elusive great finish at times. Great explanation. Stay safe and warm!
Great vid on using Acks Products. I bought a new 16” lathe in September and have been busy. My typical finish is 2# cut shellac or wiping poly. I will purchase Acks next month but most of these bowls were given away as Christmas gifts and boy what a hit they turned out to be. Thanks for your great teaching style and all the neat tips. Been assembling the board-to-bowl fixture to cut the rings.
Thank you Robert, I also love using wipe on poly. Also Polycrylic is an amazing finish as well. Very easy to use. It is a water based poly that gives a great and tough finish. Enjoy the new lathe. Gary
It was you that turned me on to Axes Pastes in the first place Gary . And I thank you for that . Great demonstration on a neat little bowl . HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours .
Hi Jim, well on my glue ups I will use many coats of finish and you will see this on my new video this Friday. I just like to get some depth on the finish because of the types of wood I am using and the design. Just a personal preference and they could be finished this way as well. Thanks for asking and I hope it makes sense. Be sure to watch this coming Friday I think you will like this one. Gary
Thanks for this very informative video. I've not been turning long (1 year) and have focused mostly on tool use and technique. Finishing is the next step in my learning processes. This video gives me a great starting point. Thanks again!

Thank you Tom and a very Happy New Year to you as well. Next weeks turning is ready for final finish so you will see it next Friday. Thanks again, Gary
Gary thanks, I guess I don’t use enough buffing compound! I like Acks products also! Thanks for all your constructive videos, have a health and safe new year!
Thanks for that video. I’ve been turning for a couple of years now and am still at the ‘painting by numbers’ stage. This has helped me with that process and tonight is another when I go to bed less stupid. Here’s hoping for a happy and healthier new year 🌞
Thank you Ray! There is always something new to learn and that is what I am always looking for. The turning for next week is something I have never done and enjoyed figuring out the process to do it. Making new and special cutting fixtures is something I really like doing. Hope you have a great New Year! Gary
I'll give the Ack's paste a try. And it's nice to support a business from my home state. Btw, I often hollow out the inside of a bowl or vase with the lathe running in reverse (using a chuck that locks on the spindle!). This way I don't need to lean over the lathe, and it's easier to see in deeper vessels. Sometimes the tool rest seems to be at an awkward angle, so I might have a custom rest made for me.
Yes it does work good. I hollow that way as well if there is something I can not reach without reaching so far over the lathe. And for sure you want the locking screw in. I agree the tool rest can get in the way doing that. I have a few tool rest to choose from so that helps. Thanks for wataching, Gary
Very well explained and shown, professor! This is such an important step in finishing some of our turnings, I know your audience is going to appreciate your expertise. Happy New Year, my friend, looking forward to seeing what you have for us in this coming year! 😀 Phil
Thank you Phil, those two things at the end of a turning are very important. Sanding and finishing. And you have those down perfect. Looking forward to when you are up to it to seeing more. Today it warmed up so I was able to spend some time and got the finish on my next piece. Hope you have a Happy New Year feel better. Take care my friend, Gary
Thanks Gary! An excellent lesson in how to produce a great finish. Hopefully the people at Ack's will see what you are doing for them and send you some free product. I am sure this video will sell a few tins of polish. Thank you for making it look simple. You sure know how to make your projects look good! See you soon!
Thank you Mark. I just hope it takes the mystery out of using abrasive paste. I think there has been some confusion on it. See you on the next one, Gary
Hi Gary, thanks in 2021 for all the great ideas, teaching, lots of helpful videos! I hope we can see you again in 2022! I wish you a happy new year! Csaba
Thank you very much Heather, I as shocked when I saw the face at that moment. I actually turned it away from me and looked again to make sure I was not seeing things LOL. Wishing you a very Happy New Year, Gary
Hi Gary Happy new year from NZ Good health happiness and may lots of shavings come your way this year.thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us other older turners allways more to learn each day Regards
Thanks for video.I have a few big oak blanks that have been drying out for a couple of years from a tree that fell in back yard. I have never turned oak before. But free wood is hard to pass on.Going to try this finish out this weekend.
Hola mister GARY. Ya esta de más decir y sus trabajos son para una exposición. Excelentes. Feliz año nuevo. Qué en el 2022 nos siga deslumbrando. Abrazo. ✋😊
Your paper towel holds up quite well to the abuse. What I use is much softer and disintegrates quickly when rubbed against the wood. That's why I prefer to use a piece of cloth for this. Only used Yorkshire Grit so far, maybe in the new year I will give the Ax Paste a try.
Thanks Leo and I do like like the blue towels for the final polish. They are very soft and hold up very well. I have not used the YG but what I am using works good for me and I am sure you would like it.
Happy new year Gary. Crotch rocket or cruiser? At 22 degrees it must’ve been a cold ride or an older picture. Oh yeah thanks for the polishing lesson, your videos are always interesting.
Thank you Barry! So the cruiser up front was mine. My older son had the crotch rocket and younger had the bike in the middle. Younger son now has my cruiser and yes that is an older picture. We did a few trips back then. Glad you enjoyed the video and Happy New Year, Gary
Great video Gary and thank you for sharing. I have been using the Acks products for a little while now, about half way through my first container of both the abrasive paste and polishing paste, and have never really known how much of the abrasive paste I should use so I have always used it kind of sparingly whereas the polishing paste I got a better sense of how much of that was needed right from the start some how. That’s certainly a beautiful bowl and I did see the person wearing a mask as well lol.
Thank you Scott. I may have had just a little more paste than I needed but I like everything covered with paste before I start the lathe. For sure I think you can have too little but not too much. That said I am thrifty with how I use it. Getting ready to go out and use it on a lacquer finish right now. Not many mentioned the face but I sure see it. Oh wait that finish as pretty shiny...it must have been my own reflection LOL Thanks for watching. Gary
@@scottsimpey2965 I use Zinsser Seal Coat and when I use shellac as final finish I use the Zinsser brand. The seal coat is unwaxed so you can put anything over the top. The shellac is waxed though
I found my best results with the polishing paste came when I let it sit on the piece for 5-10 minutes and then buffed it out at a lower speed. Less heat but it came out looking like glass. Just my experience.
Thank you Matt and that is a great tip. I will try that today when I finish the turning I have in the lathe. Although it will not be the same as I will be putting on multiple coats of finish. Wishing you a Happy New Year, Gary
Wow! What a beautiful finish! A very clear demonstration of how, and in what order, to use sanding sealer, abrasive paste, and polishing paste. Thank you for sharing. Happy New Year to you and yours--may it be healthy, prosperous, and filled with joy.
Thanks Gary. Lesson learned. I can't get the Ack's product in the Netherlands, but I'm sure this way of processing is the same for the chestnut products I use. Happy new year! Frank.
Thank you Dave. Getting better everyday. It would work fine on a natural edge bowl. All the bark would be done not spinning. But we do the same with all the finishes. Thanks for watching, Gary
That is a beauty of a bowl and I love the Acks abrasive paste and the restoring paste! I combine it with some sanding sealer and maybe some polycrylic and the finish is as smooth as glass1 It was tips from you that I learned all this and I have a big thank you to you! Happy New Year! Cheers Al
Fantastic video Gary. I always learn something from your videos. Tom very kindly set me one each of the pastes and I have to agree they work extremely well. Take care my friend and hope 2022 is a successful as 2021 was for your channel. Hwyl, Huw
Thank you Huw, yes the paste does work very well. The video was basically about the process but I happen to use the Ack's paste and like it a lot. Hope we all have a great new year my friend, Hwyl, Gary
Thanks for that Gary. It was exactly what I was looking for. I really appreciate all of the things you share on your channel. I’m very much anticipating the project waiting in the wings! I hope you had a good Christmas and wishing you a great New Year. Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick, happy you enjoyed the video. It warmed up and I was able to get it turned and just need to sand and put a finish on the new one. It is snowing again but not nearly as cold. Have a very Happy New Year, Gary
I love using Acks Paste! Plus, I think it's food-safe.
Thank you Ken. Yes all of his products are food safe. And they all work great.

Luis muchas gracias por tus amables palabras. Te agradezco que me mires y te tomes el tiempo para comentar.
Ten un feliz año nuevo,
Gary
Your paper towel holds up quite well to the abuse. What I use is much softer and disintegrates quickly when rubbed against the wood.
That's why I prefer to use a piece of cloth for this. Only used Yorkshire Grit so far, maybe in the new year I will give the Ax Paste a try.
Thanks Leo and I do like like the blue towels for the final polish. They are very soft and hold up very well.
I have not used the YG but what I am using works good for me and I am sure you would like it.
Great video Gary, Happy New Year
Thank you John and a Happy New Year to you as well. About 6 more hours for us.
Take care,
Gary
Happy new year Gary. Crotch rocket or cruiser? At 22 degrees it must’ve been a cold ride or an older picture. Oh yeah thanks for the polishing lesson, your videos are always interesting.
Thank you Barry! So the cruiser up front was mine. My older son had the crotch rocket and younger had the bike in the middle. Younger son now has my cruiser and yes that is an older picture. We did a few trips back then.
Glad you enjoyed the video and Happy New Year,
Gary
Oh wait that finish as pretty shiny...it must have been my own reflection LOL
Thanks for watching.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 oh I also meant to ask you what brand you use for shellac based sanding sealer in my first comment.
Wishing you a Happy New Year,
Gary
Wow! What a beautiful finish! A very clear demonstration of how, and in what order, to use sanding sealer, abrasive paste, and polishing paste. Thank you for sharing. Happy New Year to you and yours--may it be healthy, prosperous, and filled with joy.
Thank you very much Vincent. Happy you liked the video.
Hope you have a Happy New Year,
Gary
Thanks Gary. Lesson learned. I can't get the Ack's product in the Netherlands, but I'm sure this way of processing is the same for the chestnut products I use. Happy new year!
Frank.
Yes Frank the video was meant for any and all of these types of finish.
Happy New Year my friend,
Gary
Gary. How would the abrasive paste and polish work on natural edge bowls. Thanks for another great tutorial. Hope you are starting to feel better
Thank you Dave. Getting better everyday.
It would work fine on a natural edge bowl. All the bark would be done not spinning. But we do the same with all the finishes.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is a beauty of a bowl and I love the Acks abrasive paste and the restoring paste! I combine it with some sanding sealer and maybe some polycrylic and the finish is as smooth as glass1 It was tips from you that I learned all this and I have a big thank you to you! Happy New Year!
Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. Happy it was helpful.
Have a very Happy New Year,
Gary
Try a piece of old silk... Offcuts from your local textile shop.
Thanks for the tip Susan. Never thought of using silk for the abrasive paste.
Gary
Fantastic video Gary. I always learn something from your videos.
Tom very kindly set me one each of the pastes and I have to agree they work extremely well.
Take care my friend and hope 2022 is a successful as 2021 was for your channel.
Hwyl, Huw
Thank you Huw, yes the paste does work very well. The video was basically about the process but I happen to use the Ack's paste and like it a lot.
Hope we all have a great new year my friend,
Hwyl,
Gary
Thank You Gary....Good to know tips on a beautiful shiny finish. I am looking forward to your 2022 turnings and I wish you HAPPY NEW YEAR.......TM
Thank you so much Tuffy. I just need to get the finish on my first turning for 2022 I hope you will like it.
Have a Happy New Year,
Gary
Thanks for that Gary. It was exactly what I was looking for. I really appreciate all of the things you share on your channel. I’m very much anticipating the project waiting in the wings! I hope you had a good Christmas and wishing you a great New Year.
Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick, happy you enjoyed the video.
It warmed up and I was able to get it turned and just need to sand and put a finish on the new one.
It is snowing again but not nearly as cold.
Have a very Happy New Year,
Gary
