    00:00 How To Iron Dress Pants Introduction
    They perceive it as being quite difficult. Most dress pants are made of wool and it's very easy to end up with a shiny pair of pants that looks cheap and worn out. On top of that, ironing the pleats in the right way and especially the rise and the area on top are not easy things but they're definitely manageable.
    00:47 So How Do I Iron Pants?
    It all starts with the prep work. Of course, you need an ironing table and iron. On top of that I suggest investing into a sleeve board with a wider end and a slimmer and a spray bottle, a cloth as well as a clapper which is a wooden block. In addition to that, you can add a tailor's ham which looks like a cushion but is actually filled with sawdust. It's very stiff it helps to get the round areas in the garment ironed perfectly.
    When it comes to pants, wool is much more wrinkle resistant than cotton. A vacuum ironing board can really help to get better results more easily because it sucks out all the moist air. For best pants ironing results, you want to iron as few layers as possible simply because when you iron steam is trapped at a bottom layer which creates wrinkles there.
    If you have pleated pants you want the creases to be really sharp. To achieve that you want to use a so-called clapper it's nothing but a piece of wood usually oak that is not varnished and not stained and it doesn't have sap. It helps to remove the excess moisture and simply creates a very smooth crisp result. You can also use it in areas where you see wrinkles or waves because there's simply too much steam. If you're concerned about ending up with shiny trousers always add a damp cloth in between. It could be an old t-shirt that has been washed for many times in any case you want something that's lint-free.
    Once I'm done with the top part of the pants it's time for the legs. First of all I lay down the pants with the hems facing my iron. I'm trying to find the existing crease and iron over it again. I also wanna make sure the bottom layer of the pant leg is laid flat as possible. You may have to wiggle it around a little bit to find the perfect crease so it's exactly where it was before. Now inside at the bottom, a vacuum table really helps to get the better crease and to iron your pants much faster. Again in order to get that perfect crispness, you want the clapper. Once I'm done with the front pleat of the pant leg I iron that little part of the pants very carefully because I don't want to create any wrinkles on the outside or the backside of the pant leg. Once I'm done with that and everything is flat I can look at the back crease.
    Of course, cotton is much more prone to wrinkling than wool and because of that, it's harder to iron especially as a pair of pants. Also, it's more difficult to iron a dry pair of cotton pants instead of a wet one. Of course, you don't want it to be too wet and if you have a dry pair of pants simply spray it with water put it in a plastic bag for 10-15 minutes and then iron. It'll make life much easier for you. So what do you do if let's say your chinos do not have pleats but you want them. Well, first of all, keep in mind there must be enough fabric because pleats use up more fabric than flat front pants. If there's enough fabric I suggest you fold the pants based on the hem. Usually, you can line up the inside side seams of the pant legs with one another on each pant leg and that gives you a very good idea of where the crease has to be because ideally, you want to in the middle of the front kneecap. Honestly, the steps are the same. First I lay out my pants, I fold up one pant leg so I just have one in front of me and I start ironing the front crease. Again it can be a little more tricky because cotton has more wrinkles and you have to lie it really really flat. If your pants have cuffs I also press those and I get the pleat in there too. Again use the clapper it will make your life much easier.

    To avoid glazing, "Press" the garment. Press and lift the iron do not scrub the cloths with an iron.

    • @Gotallofthem1
      @Gotallofthem1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So why is he scrubbing the pants? I Too have seen other videos saying that when ironing pants you should press and lift not swipe, however this video has confused me as the man in the video is showing that it is ok?

    • @henrypan2624
      @henrypan2624 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@Gotallofthem1 He's using a Teflon under sole (see 1:19), which acts as a barrier between the iron and the garment. In a professional tailoring house, this is how pants would be ironed. Professional tailors would press the pants with great force in order to ensure that absolutely no wrinkles would be left out. If they don't slide and scrub, the iron would leave its outline on the pants.

    This video is more than interesting; it is informative, especially the review of ironing pleated pants, which I find challenging. I am OK with ironing shirts or pants that are not pleated. I am from the old school, in my mid-50s, and like pleated pants in my professional life.

    How do you prevent ironing in wrinkles on the opposite side of the leg? It sometimes seems sisyphean to iron one side only to put in wrinkles on the other.. Do they make boards specifically for pants?

    I have a centrifugal extractor for removing water from clothes after washing, It leaves clothes at exactly the perfect moisture level for ironing.
    Question: when clothes have gotten shiny, from wear or ironing, is there a way to remove that shine?

    May I know why use a wood clapper when one can just simply use the iron? the bottom of the iron is also flat and it has more weight, isn't it will become a better "clapper" compare to the wood one?

    • @ignotasturskis5375
      @ignotasturskis5375 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The clapper sucks the moisture out of the fabric, allowing it to keep the crease that you ironed in better. Without it, the moisture and temperature that remains in the fabric for a few seconds, will support the natural process of the crease straightening out (think of what happens if you just steam a crease without pressing down with the iron).
