Way to give Cliff his due respect. I found this video similar to the one on Dee Dee Ramone. Both bands share a lot in common, I think. For me, the driving 8th note is what attracted me to bass. It's very primal and you feel it in your gut. The opening to Thunderstruck is a perfect example of that. Great series Paul!

Thank you for this wonderful video! This video will make it much easier for me to explain to my non-musicians friends why the AC/DC beat has such a strong effect on them -- you laid it out very well!
As a young bassist, I was waaaay into Prog Rock and complicated basslines before I took a breath to appreciate how important it is to play a simple rock-solid bass line, without any fancy ornamentation, and how much power THAT could have. Cliff showed me the way -- now, I will happily play repetitive 8th notes on the A string and be in heaven!
AC/DC's rhythm section was arguably the most ROCK STEADY of any of the late 70s/early 80s bands (and still to this day); man, their time was so steady you could set your watch to them.
    ... Now to get woodsheddin'!

As an experiment I played different bass licks over some parts of AC/DC's songs...they were musically correct, but made the SONGS less cool...Less is definitely more in a Rock song many times. Many bass players lose this fact in their playing as they get "bored". I would rather play less and make the whole band shine.

First of all: thumbs up. But...
Jailbreak (1:58) has no eighth notes. Not all of AC/DC songs are made like that. Highway To Hell, to name but a few, is another example.
He doesnt follow the chords all the time. Thats what most Heavy Metal bassist do. It sounds much fresher if you keep the key while the guitars change the chords. And thats what he does very often

I actually think Cliff Williams is a bass god. Sometimes there is way too much with bass players. Maybe so mutch that a song seems to have atrial fibrulation. The song shot down in flames, get it hot and if you want blood on Highway to Hell Cliff Williams was the heartbeat of those songs and many others.
Still to this day my favorite song to play by ACDC is shot Down in Flames. The bassline is simple and never varies except on the chorus and outro. That song was the perfect bassline. In my opinion of course. Just listen to the drums for your timing and the the guitars for you transitions.
I actually think a lot of bassists do way too much.

He has changed his style a bit over the years when it comes to live. If you listen to old bootlegs from the 70s, you can hear that it used to be much more part of the "rawness" of the overall (live)sound of the band. He played very aggressively and also partially distorted (loud svt). In addition, he also sprinkled some very extraordinary small fillings, here and there. Nowadays, on the other hand, his live game and sound are more similar to the studio recordings. I really like his live sound from the 70s and it was hard work, which he did in part. However, a very important part of the style is the drummer. You can't really copy Cliff's style if the drummer isn't really tight. Many drummers "run away" (musically) when you play through a song in cliffstyle on the rootnote. ⚡️ 🤘

Rock bands are like food business.
You can't expect mcDonald's to serve more than their menu, which is what got them to success. If you want variety, don't complain, go to another eateries. There are hundreds other out there.
Of course, you can also go to fancy restaurant that never serves the same menu twice, like the one in John Wick's Continental Hotel. Or, start cooking your own food at home, try every recipe in the book.

Cliff can definitely play. Everyone usually either gives him credit or stig for pounding root notes all the time, but if you listen to some isolated tracks or live versions where the bass is higher in the mix, you can hear that the man has some chops. He just does them in a very restrained way, leaving them like little gems for bass players and devoted fans to discover.

All those notes are really well thought out and here and there is a good chance of the bling moment. You never get bored - even after thousands of listens. The genius minimalistic style is equally meticulously executed by every member of the band.
