Hey Sara! Thanks! pretty much any decent blade that I can test and take out makes me happy! For some it's cars, for others golf....People are just built differently! :) Great hearing from you!
Check out Joe X torture test, it's definitely amazing what this knife can withstand. I don't think I will ever use mine as hard but I feel better justifying myself that I bought 2. :D Good to see you back making videos!
I just did! That dude's got some issues to work out! :)) I have the Voyager XL so I will have to see his videos on that one! That was also one "ridiculous blade that just works". It was because of that that I got the 4MaxScout A long time ago I was also lying to myself. Telling myself that I need this or that knife for this or that reason. But now...i found solace in just being honest: I just like to play with them :D Thanks!
I got this knife for my own birthday present. Got it yesterday. It’s very “beefy” and sharp! I don’t plan on using as an EDC. But it’s a bad ass knife to add to my collection!!
IMO, the 4Max Scout is a pocket Survival Knife.. The Voyager XL also fills this roll, and both can easily replace a fixed blade for hiking, camping, hunting, and also Military field deployments..
Yeah...i agree. I'd rather chop and split wood with the 4MaxScout because of how sturdy it is. The Voyager is great for clearing a path, delimbing a tree...
Oh, to fix my clip, I took a bamboo skewer, slid it under and turned it sideways and left it there overnight. It loosened it up enough to fix it for me. I'm sure you can also sand right under where the clip sits with a fingernail file or something and bend the clip with a vice or lineman's or something, but what I did made it unnecessary.
It's a good tip...I don't/can't carry this on an everyday basis. If I would/could I would definitely do something about the clip. The problem is mainly with jeans...thin outdoor pants....no problem getting it in and out of those. I recently used this one again doing "yardwork". I processed 3 piles of branches into smaller pieces...about 2 hours. I had my hatchet with me and said..."maybe I start off with the 4MaxScout" and ended up not using my hatchet. It was hard work but so much fun. After about an hour, with thick leather gloves...the pinky lanyard became uncomfortable...but after i finished i had no issues...no blisters. Even if the gloves were thick...i was expecting some blisters... And the edge...a short strop and I can feel 2 small microchips....so small that you really have to be cutting the paper super slow to notice....Overall: A fantastic tool!
@@SpartanJohns, sounds like you put it through its paces, and it's an amazing performer. I wear duluth carpenters and those pockets are super thicky, which is why I needed to make a change to carry it. I Love the pockets on those pants, cause it's like they're always keeping their mouth open for my hand to get in and out, so it's really good if you need to get money out for tolls, etc., and the 4max just disappears into the pocket and seems small. But the double thickness at the lip is always a clip test for anything I carry. Some feel like they could break if I carried all the time in them, and the knives are sized for EDC. Thanks for the videos you've done on this, it gives me the confidence in it, but I doubt if I have the endurance to keep up with it. 😄
it definitely is! Very reliable. A bit heavy for edc, in my opinion, but if you can carry it and the weight is does not matter...it is definitely a great tool!
For 18 minutes i watched this video and I am amazed how static and yet how interesting it was. Greetings for that! Otherwise out taste for knifes seems to be the same as I also have the American Lawman and the 4-Max Scout! :) The American Lawman I have since 10 years at least and it has no clue of any damage with all the abuse I've put it into. Also the pivot pin is extremely strong such as the tri ad lock wich made me fall in love with it soooo much! I wanted a bigger folder for the woods so i can chop some firewood better or use it as a tool, and the 4-Max Scout was the perfect solution! I can't wait to go for my outdoor holiday and try it out!
I am glad you liked it. I was not planning on making this video at all. I have been using the Air Lite for a few months now and was actually planning on that one. But the 4MaxScout is fun to play around with so I just turned the camera on...

Hi Stephan! Freut mich das es unterhaltsam fuer dich war. Diese Leidenschaft stirbt doch nie und auch wenn bei mir nicht so oft was zu sehen ist....das Interesse an Schneidwerkzeug bleibt. So sind wir einfach geabaut! :) Liebe Gruesse, Denis
U did just fine taking it in and out of your pocket. Take a couple or more layers of cardboard and put the clip on it and leave it there for a weak and that clip should loosen up. I carry that knife every day with cargo pants or shorts. Thanks for sharing.
I don’t really mind some of these things. Like the huge tension on the pocket clip for this one of the rough texture of the g10 for the older recon1, or the very stiff backlock on my American Lawman. I actually like them. Because it makes CS knives feel like “less of a toy”, if that makes sense? But I do mention these things because i am thinking that others might want to know and if someone would like a “fix” they read thru the comments and find sugesstions like the one you gave. Thanks!
Ehi how are you!. I agree with you. The only reason I can find for justify the carry of this knife instead of a fixed blade is that you can put it in your pocket. In my country, Italy, it is not unusual to meet other people doing hiking, and many people is scared of knives. But well, I know it is not a good enough reason. In fact I usually carry my Becker BK10 in the backpack and a light folder in my pocket.
The 4max scout **can** work in a pocket. If you're traveling, camping, fishing, etc. It's nice to have a less outwardly ostentatious knife going in and out of gas stations or shops ( Canadians the opposite is required by your laws, I think) than an Esee 6 or something
It can definitely work in a pocket. Just that getting it and out can be a bit difficult. However....I think the 4MaxScout is worth it. I have been doing a ton of yardwork this week and last week with it, just for fun...and I am still amazed at how well it puts it all away....I wouldn't call it a replacement for the ESEE 6 but I am sure it can do a better job than the ESEE 4. I have been thinking about that the last week.
@@joshuabriggs7114 I already have this one...sure i'd like a nice hollow grind. I think it would be very useful especially when you want to use it for cutting into harder materials. I have to be honest here and admit that I use this one mostly for chopping. I am planning to sharpen it at a lower edge angle but for now i am curios how long this factory edge will last without taking any damage. It is still very sharp. And the initial edge angle is not bag considering its size
The AD-10 is awesome. It's the perfect larger folding knife to carry. The ergos are great (probably my favorite of any folder I've owned so far), and I carry it while hiking in case I need to stab a mountain lion as a last resort before getting mauled to death. Honestly, I don't notice it in my pocket even after 10+ miles.
The 4 MaxScout was ok-ish....not as sharp as my other cts xhp models...not that the steel has anything to do with it. It was probably a different quality control back then But it did slice paper....and the edge angle is not that huge
Spartan, I know you said AUS 10a is hard to sharpen… I find the absolute contrary… I find it easy to sharpen , especially cold steels AUS 10a. D2 ,s30v and s110v totally suck to sharpen…. Haven’t tried maxamet but heard the same about that steel. But, AUS 10a, 14c28n and CTS-BD1 are quite easy to get an edge. I consider, even though it’s not a super steel like elmax or cru-wear, AUS 10a to be one of the best all purpose steel that can take a beating!
I find it a bit harder to sharpen than some steels. Dropping the edge angle down, i found that took a bit more time than with other steels. Just sharpening, keeping an edge angle....that went by really smooth. I mainly use diamond stones and I compare them accordingly. Not to say that I am right and you are wrong. It does depend on what you use and your technique as well as the materials you use to sharpen
the main reason for 4max scout as I see it for me is, a fixed blade that is the same size att 4max scout is in practical sens imposible to carry in a pocket with a sheath, a folder reduce the length by like 40-50% in length, that is a huge reason for this knife to exist , I love my big an huge fixed blade knife, but it´s not possible to tak them and go in a pocket, the 4max scout you can easily do that in 1 sec :)
I agree 100%. I was thinking of an ESEE 4/4 Max Scout comparison. The 4 Max Scout is heavier but I think that also comes with some benefits. However the ESEE 4 can take more abuse because it is a fixed blade. Carrying the knife in your pocket, not needing a sheath and still being able to do about 80-90% of what you can do with a fixed blade of the same weight/length...can be quite a thought changing experience
"Patent pending"! :)) But yeah....I have seen 1-2 people actually use it like this but have had no feedback...whether they got the idea from me or somewhere else
Yeah...i saw it too! I do like his destruction tests. This is a stubby, heavy knife! I think that for what it looks like it really outperforms itself. I personally don't have much use for it but I like it!
Currently i have the edge angle at about 20 dps...which, for such a thick grind, makes things more difficult. But it is very resistant to abuse. I am sure that at 17 it would do much better while still being able to withstand some abuse. 15 dps is what I am aiming for. But before this I will drop the edge angle on the AirLite to see how 15 dps does for AUS10SA with normal use.
Definitely a big folder. I tested it against the esee4. Made a video. Sure it is not going to be as resistant to abuse as a well made fixed blade but i think it definitely held its own
Hi, I have a question but first some background. I live in Europe (Belgium) and I go camping in Belgium, Holland, France and Germany. I have a skrama 240 and a Cold Steel tomahawk for regular camping on private grounds. I have a Mora Garberg for regular camping on public grounds. For all my regular knife and saw tasks I use a Victorinox Forrester and Rangergrip. I have recently picked up on motercycle camping again (with my brother) and I do not wish to take the Skrama nor the tomahawk nor the Mora for splitting wood (for obvious reasons). I am torn between the 4 max Scout, the Rajah 2 and the Voyager as a "machete" for splitting wood with a max diameter of 10 cm. Which would you recommend? Thank you for your feedback Kind regards Alain
Hi Alain, I do not have the Rajah 2. However I did a lot of yard work with the Voyager XL. And I also chopped/split wood with it. I have a video. Might be worth checking out to see if it would make sense for you and how i tested it. The bigger blade can come in handy! For me and how i like to use it, also for cutting food, it would be the Voyager XL. BUT! For abuse, batoning and prying, chopping, i would get the 4 Max Scout. It is very solid. But for the other tasks, like cutting food, the blade is a bit too thick and short. I tested it against the ESEE 4. Also a video you might want to watch. Even if it is so chunky, i think it carries better in pocket than the Voyager XL. Maybe watch my videos on the voyager and the scout/esee test. See if you can relate…
If you need a blade you can abuse more i would go for the 4maxscout. It is shorter and more solid. The voyager has aluminium liners. Keeps the weight down but in combination with the long wide blade you could damage it with abuse faster the 4maxscout. It is a tough choice…overall the 4maxscout is probably the better choice. I think it is one of those knives that will last a lifetime even if abused. Simply because it is build like a tank. It will also split dry wood because of its grind. As a wood splitting tool it is the better choice. The place where the voyager will do better is chopping(as you said a machete) and cutting food. If you decide on ine or the other, in the future and if you remember and have the time i would be very curious how you feel about any of them. Hope this helps BR, Denis
@@SpartanJohns Thanks, this does shed a little more light on it. When I've decided I'll let you know how I decided. Armed with your info I will now do a price comparisson and decide from there. Kind regards Alain
@@SpartanJohns Hi Denis, I think I will go for the Voyager drop point. The usage will not be very abusive with, as a hardest task, batoning pieces of no more than 10 cm diameter (bearing in mind that, if I get stuck, I'ld rather pull out than force through. There are always other pieces of wood on hand and, if not, a wedge can be cut to use force). Also I believe its length of 14 cm vs 11 cm on the 4Max Scout is an advantage. Price point is the same, 119 euro. Price got the Rajah 2 out of the loop (190 euro). Also, when re-watching you use both, the (visual) usage for the Voyager reminds me more of a fixed blade (like we used in the Boy Scouts back in the day - not a real full tang but a rat tail, while as the 4Max Scout reminds me more of a heavy unwieldly pocket knife (I dont know if this last point makes any sense to you but it does to me :-), I think I will apreciate the feel of the Voyager more. Anyway, a big thanks for your input. Kind regards, Alain
I like the size and weight of it! Very capable, very stable! Chops like no other. Complete overkill for 99% of people. Big guys and the ones who really do hard every day tasks are that 1%. Me? I love it! But I really have few things which call for it. I take it in the woods mostly and really like to use it for processing fire wood. I am fascinated by it. Thought about other models of similar size, weight, from CS. And if I can set aside some money..i think I will try out a few more.
@@SpartanJohns I don't know- where I live I can drive through hours of wilderness, get out at a stop for fuel and food- and prefer my gear be concealed. It's that sort of thing I was considering: being dressed for camp but having to make stops...

@@SpartanJohns mine will be arriving today - I’m sure I will love this knife - I have not found anyone who dislikes it - it’s power seems to shine through - thanks for the great review
@@SpartanJohns I can relate to your point - it’s size looks like it wouldn’t be useful but it does cut well - I do carry it but I do hesitate to deploy in mixed company - people look to much - I like to blend in - so I carry another as well and put the scout in my laptop bag - in a bad situation I would not feel comfortable with out it - it’s more than a knife - it’s a hard working tool - it’s just a solid machine - the lock is the reason I bought it - I am very happy with it in the inventory- your review and that of joeX were great research - thanks for the sensible review
Even a fixed blade can break. Then why would anyone do the same thing to a knife with moving parts? It's fun, I get that. For that bulk and weight it makes no sense to not bring a fixed blade instead. To me it's the lack of logic that baffles me if this knife is ment to chop and batton. And if it's not suppose to do it, then what is it for? I use folders and sturdy fixed blades, but for different jobs. It's rediculous allright!😆
I think CS has a big percentage in the business of RIDICULOUS. Most companies do but without saying so. They overbuild blades(Thicker stock, thicker grinds, bigger edge angles) and make more robust handles and then they pretend that their knives are "slicers" at 0.8 mm behind the edge with a 25 dps edge angle and say so when presenting them on youtube. See Spyderco/Shaman. CS overbuilds their folders and show abuse. Why a folder and not a fixed blade? I have thought about this a long time. I answered that question for myself when I got the Voyaer XL. I always carried the ESEE 6 with me when going out bushcrafting. And it was on my belt. Lately I keep the Voyager in my pocket. Not entirely the same purpose for those 2 blades but i am thinking you get my point

Thank you for your feedback
Kind regards
Alain
Hi Alain,
I do not have the Rajah 2.
@@SpartanJohns Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me. I did see both videos. That's why I asked for your opinion.
Kind regards
Alain
Hope this helps
BR,
Denis
@@SpartanJohns Thanks, this does shed a little more light on it. When I've decided I'll let you know how I decided. Armed with your info I will now do a price comparisson and decide from there.
Kind regards
Alain
@@SpartanJohns Hi Denis,
I think I will go for the Voyager drop point.
Kind regards,
Alain
The biggest problem with the 4-Max is it's not a 5-Max.
i'd like to see that too!
i know this comment!
For most this isn't an EDC knife. As a big man I appreciate the size.
Aftermarket clips on Ebay make this way more pocketable.
I thought about that....but then again...what are the chances of me carrying this one in my pocket anywehere else than in the woods....
@@SpartanJohns I don't know- where I live I can drive through hours of wilderness, get out at a stop for fuel and food- and prefer my gear be concealed. It's that sort of thing I was considering: being dressed for camp but having to make stops...
I edc my 4 max 🤭
if you do....I think that's cool! I like mine...it's on my desk....but I mainly take it outdoors to chop. :)
Check JoeX review of this beast. It is stronger than most fixed blades.
I know his channel and his video on the 4Max Scout.
I also tested the 4Max Scout against the ESEE 4 check it out if you want to
@@SpartanJohns Yes, I have watched it. It is great. I really like your reviews, really good, realistic and no nonsense. I also use the pinky lanyard ;)
@@dksparticles3187 ahhh...a man of culture... the.."SpartanJohns Patent Pending Pinky Lanyard" you mean...surely.... 😁
Thank you! Much appreciated!
sounds like you want to hate this knife but cant :-)
oh no! far from it. I thought it would be a cool knife! But i never really thought it would actually be as useful as it turned out to be. I like it very much! I was looking to like it and was even more surprised than I thought it to be possible
@@SpartanJohns mine will be arriving today - I’m sure I will love this knife - I have not found anyone who dislikes it - it’s power seems to shine through - thanks for the great review
@@cassanoa thanks to my late reply....you probably already have the knife. You like it? Can you relate to the point i showed in this video?
@@SpartanJohns I can relate to your point - it’s size looks like it wouldn’t be useful but it does cut well - I do carry it but I do hesitate to deploy in mixed company - people look to much - I like to blend in - so I carry another as well and put the scout in my laptop bag - in a bad situation I would not feel comfortable with out it - it’s more than a knife - it’s a hard working tool - it’s just a solid machine - the lock is the reason I bought it - I am very happy with it in the inventory- your review and that of joeX were great research - thanks for the sensible review
@@cassanoa Thanks for the reply! for me it is always useful to know if people can relate to what/how i show/talk about things.
