Interesting, the timing of this choice. I actually think it was her way to clean out her nest for future eggs/eaglets. She knew the rain/storm would wash away the last remaining debris of that failed attempt, to make way for a clean nest for a future family.
This was a very educational experience to watch Jackie and Shadow. I’m sad that it didn’t work out for them. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to watch this.
To me this was Jackie's way of saying goodbye to this nesting season.😥

When nature knows best. I’m sure we would never have seen a rare thing like this without the dedication of FOBB camera team staying with the nest. I think she made the nest ready for her next clutch. They need a place to come home to without the dead eggs. That was an image I won’t soon forget.

@@jacquip644 I started animal baby watching when April the Giraffe had the 24/7 coverage. And caught the birth in real time that morning. This story has been equally satisfying despite the lack of chicks. I think I got Even More satisfaction and joy through witnessing the unexpected outcome- 2 grieving bald eagles trying to cut the cord. Very moving to me. I think in a way it has more meaning to participate in this outcome. I see two partners working together and resolution to move forward. Pretty darn cool.
The music really got to me in the end.

Awe I’m very sad for them. They both took great care of these eggs & especially thru the freezing weather and in the deep snow ⛄️ I guess we’ll no longer be seeing Jackie & Shadow ???? And that makes me sad 😔
We will next year. This area is where they live year round, from what I understand.

A few days prior, she came in the evening and buried the last 2 eggs and then let out a sweet chortle or sound. To me she knew what she had to do to let go. She seemed to have to let go of sitting on the nest sooner than Shadow. Nature has their mysterious ways. Roost well and fly high J & S, we love you. Oh - that HUGE stick! Very Nice Jackie

I can't shake the concern that the eggs couldn't be incubated properly because of the snow and frigid weather this year.
Shadow gets there first and every time he looks at the eggs his head snaps up and looks around to see if Jacky is coming. It's sad but that is the way nature works.

Interesting how the storm came in right after Jackie ate the eggs...her thoughts I'm sure were I'll be damned if I let the ravens get my babies😢 It was the right decision. Shadow can move on as well.❤❤❤

Well, good for her . . they never developed in any way and they are nutritious . . . Sad that there were no chicks but she and Shadow seem to continue to be a happy couple with a beautiful home.
Can any information be gleaned by experts from the "opening" of the eggs and their contents? Had they been fertile and if so at what stage did development cease? Maybe this can't be determined visually or due to deterioration. I'm also curious about past breeding success. I know Spirit flew off the nest two seasons ago, I believe, and a sibling was also lost in the nest. Last year and this year no hatchlings. Is this typical? Does anyone know how many total offspring Jackie and Shadow have produced?

To watch Jackie, keep bowing her head in sorrow before she ate her eggs left me emotionally spent, tears running down my face, i wanted so much for those babies to be born. Ive watched these two eagles for years and its so sad to wstch her way of burying her grief. Praying for Gods blessings on future eaglets to these wonderful Eagle parents. ❤

I hadn’t watched the live cam since the day before this very sad day. It was raining here in California and even snowed. I was so heartbroken about the loss of the eggs and Jackie how she finally realized they were t going to hatch. How it took Shadow three whole sleepless nights more and a day to leave their eggs. Then Jackie who she kept trying to get Shadow to stop laying in them. It was just so heartbreaking. I really wanted those three eggs to make it into eaglets. Shadow in the video still would look at his eggs and watch for any sign of life. So sad. Jackie who was so fierce and sacrificed throughout this harsh and brutal winter and to see her eat the contents was heart wrenching for me. I know I know, the eggs didn’t make it but still…..she ate the protein left in them and it was sad.
Bald eagles typically do not eat their own eggs. They are very protective of their eggs and invest a lot of time and effort into incubating them and raising their chicks. However, in rare cases, if an egg is infertile or if the parents perceive that it's not viable for some reason, they might remove it from the nest. This behavior is more about maintaining the health and success of the overall clutch rather than intentional consumption.
In the other eagle cam I watch..one did hatch & parents buried it, the egg hatched & is a wonder...parents are excellent, eaglet far above development scale

The Eagles are not sad about their eggs not hatching like our human brains interpret. Unhatched eggs are just another food source at the end is all. People are much more sad about this event than Shadow or Jackie will ever be.

What happened to the third egg?
That egg was cracked ,I believe shell & embryo buried ..sad as shadow nested with 3 eggs & woke up with two at nest change
