This kid definitely has a lot of room for improvement in college when he gets to Stanford given how low his mileage is. Also, I really disagree with the "hit the splits" mentality of the coach. The kids should learn to run by feel/effort, because some days 5k pace for example is a little faster or slower than other days, depends on how your body feels that day.
I agree 100%, I'm a sophomore in hs and not a super high level runner by any means but I'm #2 on my team and our assistant coach stresses us hitting the pace, not over nor under, when were not all gonna feel good or bad necessarily

In this context I think he meant he didn't want the runners to go faster than their prescribed paces.
