These Big Urban Canal Fish Are NOT Supposed to Eat Lures!

  • For this session I headed to the local canal in search of some unconventional predators! The aim was to use my super ultra light setup and tiny micro jigs in the hope of catching anything willing to take it. Its safe to say that even though the pike and perch took a fancy to my tiny baits it was the other species that stole the show!

Definately want to see more of these! I've just made a few micro jigheads using fly hooks (offset eye for tying nymphs), splitshot and drops of epoxy to keep the shot in place. Much cheaper than buying jigheads, and can go down to size 12 or 14 hooks.

When I want to go really tiny I actually use a tiny amount of tungsten putty around the eye of the hook. Can adjust the weight by just removing or adding putty then.

I’m having major difficulties getting used to the ultra light lines though. It always slips through my fingers or gets caught by a gust of wind. Do you have my tips to make this easier? Yes they are likely to be non-migratory brown trout. Suggest you use a small spoon or spinner as these generally target trout better than soft plastics.
