- Recently, Motorcycle.com had the chance to sit in on a symposium surrounding the ins and outs of the MIPS helmet technology by one of the co-founders of the company, Peter Halldin. What two decades of research and thousands of pages of peer-reviewed studies have concluded is that rotational energy has as much, or more, impact on the brain during a crash than just the impact force alone. MIPS aims to reduce the rotational trauma. Here's how.

The idea is that the slippery surface is firmly against your head inside the helmet and in an impact the entire helmet can slide around against that slippery shell like if you had an oversized loose helmet for a split second so your head doesn't get jerked into a rotational motion instantly. It then grabs the helmet again making the transition into a rotation much smoother or in some impacts not allowing the rotation at all lessening the damage caused to your brain.
This however does not mean a loosely fit helmet is safer, no. A helmet needs to be a tight firm fit all around but also be allowed to slide a little bit against your head in an impact what this system allows without having any effect on the impact resistance of a correctly fit tight helmet.
Your reply should be pinned as it is heads and shoulders above the "engineers" explanation how this system works.
Sounds good and I just purchased a helmet for riding my motorcycle with this technology but I have no idea how it works and hopefully never will need to received by it.
I'm looking forward to the research papers into the benefits of MIPs that wasn't paid for by MIPs. I'd much prefer to see EPP foam used in motorbike helmets.

Still not clear on how it works. From what he described, the only point is to have a slippery surface that doesn't grab the floor surface. The insides don't seem to do anything aiding that.
Look into 6D. Real protection.

Bell has a few models of motorcycle helmets with MIPS. (Star, Qualifier, Moto9, etc)

Tech is limited by angle of impact. 6D Helmets offer better Linear and Angular Acceleration mitigation.

If Arai isnt picking up the system theres a good chance it doesnt work in the real world considerin reducing rotational force is the name of their game.
Nah they would rather keep on telling you that their round helmet is better at the same thing. While Arai's are good helmets overall, they are being left in the dust by designs that are much better. They are just screwing over their fanbase by not investing or changing with new technology.
@@supersportimpalass I'm not sure about that bud, can you name one brand of helmets that has higher safety ratings that uses some sort of new technology proven to be more effective at protecting your head?
@@JK-tu1xx Bell tests better in every Sharp test even with their lowest price Star helmet along with the Pro and Race star. Each one uses the mips system.
Snell doesn't publish its test results so the Sharp is the only available tests that can be compared. Current DOT tests have long been known to be less stringent.
Just because people throw their wallets at Arai doesn't necessarily mean they are the best because they charge a ridiculous price for them.

J K There are lot of helmets other than Arai that comply with Snell, ECE 22.05 and 5 star sharp ratings
If thats not enough the newest AGV pista GP RR is FIM homologated helmet that’s available for the masses

theyve been pushing this in the bicycle cycling world for awhile now, people are learning that its just a scam, eg. hair serves the same function
Maybe in a slow speed crash such as bicycling. Not in real world, high speed motorcycle crashes. It's been shown in independent tests that the Bell helmets with mips exceed other helmets without it. The Sharp data proves it.

i think this is just purely marketing ~ impact is impact haha MIPS can't help if your head in on the wheels of truck. haha
MIPS will spin your head from underneath the truck safely and cause the truck to flip over instead, maybe.

BiLT helmets provide more Linear Impact management. Call Arai and ask for Impact Lab. Test results to prove their helmets offer more. They will not give it to you.
