Yeah they are fun to dual but I think there are better options. If you like the rot then use the greathammer that inflicts rot. It will stagger with 2 hits and does like 850+ ar. The thrusting weapons are best with bleed for me. Besides the frozen needle. I just think stagger is best and you don't get stagger with the small thrusting swords. Greatswords and hammers just slap pve

@@stompingpeak2043 stagger is great but thrusting sword pair well with shields because of the poke. For strictly pve both are up there as some of the best options in the game. They hit faster than large weapons too so statuses are stronger, especially when powerstancing.

I use the banished knights halberd primarily for stagger effect.. it’s just the most balanced weapon for me in this game, basically every knight-type build I have is using it. Sweepies, pokies, and it’s still a pretty nimble weapon compared to the damage it can do.

Antspur + Frozen Needle combo carried me through a good 70% of my first time through the game, and I didn't even think to get real nasty by converting the Antspur to something like Poison/Frost/Bleed. I wasn't playing the two of them at the most "optimal" or meta level, but I had tons of fun with those rapid hits, status effects, and Curved Sword talisman. I felt like a blender on legs with how quickly I was going through enemy health bars.

A major advantage of the Rapier, along with its crit mod, is the fact that Astrologers can use it with baseline stats. It's a great early game weapon for mages, especially after you get the Assassin's Cerulean Dagger.

Super small thing that you missed about thrusting swords: i was combing the motion value spreadsheet and noticed that 2h block counters have a 825% poise damage multiplier. Thats the highest in the game, albeit on a class with poor block mitigation and low base poise damage. However, this leaves rapiers just below UGS for counter poise damage

something about the Estoc: it has (I think) the fastest secondary R2 in the game. it comes out just frames slower than the secondary R1. this also means a Feint can be used extremely quickly after the first R2, which can then chain into a lunging R1, as Feints are basically a Backstep

I remember the first time I used thrusting swords. The Tree Crucible Knight in Leyndell was utterly beyond me. I couldn't hit fast enough to fight him in melee, and I couldn't get the room I needed for magic. Eventually, I dual-wielded Frozen Needle in my off-hand with an Ice Cleanrot Sword with Bloodhound's Step in my main. I took him apart in seconds! I didn't even notice his health dropping, it went so fast.

A few months ago, I tried to do a playthrough of all the Soulsborne games I had access to and tried to have a consistent build across all of them. For this build, I decided to try the rapier, a weapon that I never gave much time to before. Starting with Demon's Souls, going through the Dark Souls trilogy, then Bloodborne and finally Elden Ring, many aspects of the build had to be tweaked and modified across the series but the rapier remained consistent. From this experience, the rapier has become perhaps my favorite weapon type. It's fast, it does decent damage, works with a shield and I seldom have to worry about it bouncing off the walls in tight corridors like with other swinging weapons. It's become a core part of one of my favorite Elden Ring builds.

i got carried by the rogier rapiers ash of war on my first playthrough, that thing was no joke, sure it was pretty mediocre damage from the rapier itself but being able to stagger almost any enemy on 1 use of the ash of war ment it was an easy kill on anything, and i could just kite away and wait for it to procc the stagger almost exclusively.
my intent was to use an int/dex build to have aoe spells to account for multiple small enemies but down the road i just felt i didn't use the spells nearly enough to warrant the int so i went full dex til the end and it served me better, and later i messed around with several rapier builds myself.
now i'm currently thinking of doing a page build, meaning i would use a crossbow in the off-hand and a rapier in the main hand and potentially use some consumable items like parfumes or pots or special bolts in the crossbow for those rare occasions where they could be useful, it's probably something i will be doing in the expansion or test a little bit before the expansion hits.

Bestoc has been my main weapon since Dark Souls. Thrusting swords are basically the only European blades that Fromsoft has done justice - they don't handle like axes with simplistic swings or even just blunt clubs (that stupidly hit the ground and kick up earth as part of their combos), and actually properly function as the sword part next to the board.

Yeah same for me, I'm not a fan of thrusting swords just like I'm not a fan of most of the spears. All it does is pokes. That's why I like weapons like the claymore, has some horizontal swings has some vertical swings and has a poke. It's varied and I like that... It's not the best greatsword sadly but it's not the worst either.

According to mption values of ER weapons, thrusting and heavy thrusting swords actually do the same damage s R1 when shieldpoking, they have motion values of 100. While spears and greatspears only get 85... Only downside of shieldpoking is much slower attack rate

I don't know if you tried the swords on a new game but I did an entire run of the game with thrusting and then another with normal swords. The biggest problem with thrusting swords is that the majority of the time you're simply not dealing a lot of DPS which makes bosses 10x harder to deal with. More so that the class doesn't do a lot of poise damage so you can't utilise the crits for non-parryable enemies (tools can stagger enemies but still).
I ended up using the Cleanrot swords since you can farm them, rapier was good for quick parrying but honestly if you have to switch you might as well use the dagger (Misercorde), Antspur rapier was good for the effects but you don't get it until mid game which may or may not be worth the hassle.
Regarding bosses again, it feels that fighting them is much more of an attrition battle than a proper battle, I would take off millimetres of boss health (with sword at +10 in some cases) only to see youtube videos of other classes at the same point in the game easily do 3-5x the damage. While that might work for some bosses/enemies, given the high health and high damage output of Elden Ring's bosses, taking longer than needed makes the game much much harder than say a heavy hitting weapon (again you have no poise damage so it's not like you get a break, it's constantly trying to get shots in). Also a side note is that normally the shorter rapiers are just simply too short to hit bosses, the same problem was in DS1 and DS3 so nothing new but it makes a lot of weapons entirely unusable.
For other From games the rapier has always been bad (playing DS:R with rapier atm, I straight up can't use it on bosses because the DPS is so bad), so it's nothing new to the series.

      For my own reference:
Frozen Needle sounds very interesting for a NG playthrough. I can plan to have a back-up for NG+ and beyond that I upgrade alongside Frozen. I'm interested to try thrusting swords based on their assets as discussed in this video, I had no idea they had so many benefits.
Cold Estoc + Fire Noble's Estoc for the swag sounds fun. I imagine most if not all of these weapons will benefit from some kind of status effect as NG cycles start accumulating due to the higher health pools of enemies.
Cleanrot + Shield sounds like a solid playthrough I haven't considered yet. Could be a good introductory build to the thrusting sword moveset. Rogier's + a parrying shield is also a playstyle I hadn't considered. Why isn't Rogier's Rapier a unique weapon??
Antspur Rapier sounds like it has a lot of NG++ beyond potential because of all the status effects, but I wonder if that really will be as effective as it sounds considering the low damage. I get the feeling I may prefer a stronger-hitting weapon that can also apply status, since once the status is applied the build-up potential is useless until the status wears off.

One nice thing early game is that Rogiers Rapier comes upgraded a good bit and the phalanx will carry the enchantments or greases out on tge sword since it's all physical damage. Idk if it's intended, but you can do bloodflame on it, fire, give me strength, and flame shrouded cracked tear, as well as magic shrouded cracked tear, and every buff will apply to the phalanx for god knows what reason.
