Since he didn't mention it, I'd like to point out that the Bolt of Gransax is AMAZING against Malenia. She doesn't dodge it if you fully charge the weapon skill, and you can use it to attack her from WAY outside her range. You'll still need to learn her moves for phase 2 as she will manage to catch up to you sometimes and/or will reach you with Waterfowl Dance, but this weapon was by far the easiest way I found to fight her.
Ironically enough, Radahn's greatswords are one of her banes, too, as she takes big ass stagger every single time you press R1, and is knocked down everytime you press L2 two times.
Spears are really one of the most versatile weapons in Elden Ring. Having that extra reach on enemies can be a god send in certain situations and since a lot of baddies have to be really close to attack, it's easy to get hits in and be at a safe distance, plus it does good poise stagger to a good chunk of them. Also, enemies tend to "line up" or stack up when you back away so you can stab multiple baddies with one thrust. They are also the best weapon to use on Torrent. They are not the best or the flashiest, but they are very reliable in a lot of situations.
I can't begin to thank you all for your hard work both here and on the wiki. I am sure you get comments all the time about 'why aren't you talking about my fav weapon category' but I was hoping you could do a video on shields. In all of the vids in this series so far you start off about talking about the different playstyles, and a majority of them have some sort of pairing with shields in a block counter style. I was hoping you could either go more in depth about which shield you would pair with which weapon and why when you start talking about your preferences with the individual weapons, or do a series of videos on the pros and cons of the different shields. It would certainly help a noob like me who kind of gets lost in the tables on the wiki.
Occult infusion works really well on the spiked spear and cross naginata because it allows your arcane stat to scale both the base bleed and damage of these weapons. You loose out on around 10-30 AR over keen, but you gain up to 50 more bleed. The ash of war seppuku works well with these weapons as it buffs them with 30 attack power and 30 base bleed that scales with arcane.
Naginata really deserves to be used by itself without powerstancing to let the elegant moveset shine. Remember that while one-handing it, the roll/crouch attack is a long fast poke rather than the borderline useless short swipe of the 2H moveset, and you barely lose any damage one-handing on a dex build. This also allows you to keep a buckler, seal, or sidearm etc in the left hand at all times, giving you more immediate on-demand options. I tend to carry a Wakizashi in the left hand to deal with close-range emergencies like dogs and imps where the Naginata has trouble. And of course Impaling Thrust is a disgustingly good move for this weapon.
I used Naginata powerstanced with Bolt of Greatsex lol. I was just blasting lightning spears at enemies for the most of time and wielded Naginata for badass fashion.

When you are dex small weapons built but you realize you need a spear to kill dragons because they are hard to reach and they are weak to thrust, bolt of gransax is perfect, because it also has 20% bonus damage to dragons
just please don't use it agaisnt Lansseax or Fortissax. It only deals +10% against ancient dragons and those two have 80% lightning resist. Also it does no extra damage against Placidusax, cause that one isn't a dragon or ancient dragon EDIT: better use a pure piercing damage spear with dragonwound grease (+20% against ancient dragons) against those 2
We need the Ringed Knight Spear in this game, after playing Nioh 2 soulsborne spears are more boring than before. Reason why I like using the guardian spear and Loretta sickle.
After Nioh 2, almost all fromsoft games are boring as hell, with the exception of level design. Team Ninja literally does everything From does, only less boring, less lovecraftian and less lore heavy. Don't get me wrong, I loved all the souls titles. I've platinumed them all without hesitation. Nioh's combat, build customization and character creation is just lightyears ahead. Souls combat is hollow in comparison and don't even get me started on how a dark souls "build" comes down to a couple stats and a few accessories. Lol
Fantastic work as usual and it's always awesome to see combos for weapons I don't get to use, but I'm kinda surprised that the occult infusion isn't mentioned for weapons like the spiked spear and cross-naginatta? Also a question to anyone that knows, as I'm not certain if it would be viable or not, would the sacred/flame infusion be a plausible infusion on the clayman's spear for death/golden order builds that aim for high levels of intelligence and faith?
I fell in love with spears and staffs when I played dark souls and got Ornstein’s spear. I don’t know why but using a spear or staffs with such precision using the length as leverage for more powerful and precise attacks just tickles me right
You mentioned Inquisitor's girandole being good for ng+, but didn't quite get the point across, it has one of the best dual wield dps (third best at max level), and significantly outranges the other high dps max level options, along with bleed build up. Optimal stat spread can be reached around ng+2. It also has similar scaling to the magma blades, which have the best dps in the entire game.
Been waiting for this 😊 Edit: I was a little too excited and didn't realize they would not cover the big ol' spears (which is my favourite next to greatswords and katanas)
Death Ritual Spear and staff for spiral shards, ambush, and thops barrier. I only really swing with it for criticals or charged heavy 2h attacks of opportunity. Also i have Bolt of gransax and glinstone kris, same story, though but with godfrey icon. The ash of war is basically another spell. Mimic tear spamming death ritual spear with you is a sight against larger targets. The summon doesnt use bolt of gransax correctly, but the knockdown effect I use to kite. If you time it right the target rolling becomes a rather insignificant issue
I have a lovely pvp build using two clayman harpoons! One infused with magic in the offhand, and one uninfused so you can buff it in the main hand. It really chews through people
ahh the short spear, the king of spears for myself as a Prophet, I will admit I'm a touch biased since the Short Spear (and morningstar too) carried me through my first playthrough as a pure faith build and it complimented EVERY SINGLE STARTING INCANTATION/ASHES OF WAR WE FAITH USERS GET, and I'm including everything found in Limbgrave, Weeping Peninsula, and Stormveil Castle; Catch Flame is the Prophets main form of up close and personal high damage, nothing beats its fp-damage efficiency for us, even late game it's a MONSTER. but spear allows you to either attack people trying to stay out of CF range or bait people to roll into your CF casts since it can also chain cast off of...pretty much any animations, CF is the faith builds Carian Slicer. Heal gets some help from it as you can *technically* space out someone to get a cheeky heal in, i've done it a number of times and the level of aggressive action a player takes seeing you take that knee and let off a heal never gets old (and even better when you punish them with a stab or CF) Flame Sling.. ah flame sling, how I love you, you've baited plenty of people into CF or my spear arts in the early levels and helped me with my crowd clearing issues Flame of Frenzy, while being an obviously great early crowd/giant killer, again you can bait to bring someone closer for stabs with the spear. Lighting Storm is...well it's flame of frenzy but lightning basically but chain casts and random cone of attack zones, great in water and I mean G R E A T, tips with FoF applies here really, it's just lightning instead of fire. however the chain cast is cheeky if an enemy tries to back off because you can quickly send out a wall of sparks at them. Black Flame and Black Flame Blade... yeah if you were worried about damage, these save your spear, great damage, AMAZING MAX HP BLEED, and in reference to BFB, it's amazing on the spear. fast attacks, fast cast, theoretically you only need to hit a clown with it 20 times atmost, and they'll die to that cheeky burn you applied. Ashes of War? it can use a wide array of them tbh, more than i can recall but it's clever to either get a multi hit AoW and apply bleed/BFB, or get something for crowds. although as a Pure Faith build I reccomend one keeps it standard, lets you buff it until you get the good stuff yknow? speaking of good stuff... Black Flame Tornado... yeah that's gunna slap on a Flame Art Short Spear. in short, short spear is king and prophets should be fears, specially if they have a better shield by the time you meet one.
Golden great shield with barricade shield and bolt of gransax is such a good combo. Took me 2 try’s to beat malenia in my first ever souls run. (People may consider it cheese but it was fun for me)
One thing I've always disliked with basically every spear in Souls games is that they're all pokes. Spears can slash and bonk with the other end. Swords get plenty of varied movesets, but it seems like they just couldn't be asked to make spears cool. Santier's Spear in (once again, the best out of the bunch) Dark Souls 2 had what I was looking for.
I recommend checking the occult scaling for the partisan if I remember correctly it's around 50 scaling better then heavy and keen which also opens the option for status greases
1) no. Occult infusion is always weaker scaling for arcane than either heavy for strength or keen for dex (depending on the weapon) 2) you cannot use greases on an occult weapon
@@common_undead I think it's because, unlike with other spears, the double power attack is a faster extending forward strike, makes attacking, and instantly rolling away so much easier. But tbh, with the amount of sheer magic spammers in pvp, i honestly don't feel guilty about it. I bow before and after fights, rather than being a toxic dick when winning, plus i wear near 0 armor, the rotten duelist set, Elden Bling ect,
Flails Please! Not joking, I like them. My first play through was dual Flails and they've been buffed since launch, so it be cool to see some Flail love.
I always wanted to beef up the black knight flail as I love their armor, it's what I always wear. As far as armor do you think elden ring emphasizes agility or players tactical skills for defense over your armor choice? I do, but am curious what other players think.

When you are dex small weapons built but you realize you need a spear to kill dragons because they are hard to reach and they are weak to thrust, bolt of gransax is perfect, because it also has 20% bonus damage to dragons
I did not know this about Bolt of Gransax, thank you
just please don't use it agaisnt Lansseax or Fortissax.
It only deals +10% against ancient dragons and those two have 80% lightning resist.
Also it does no extra damage against Placidusax, cause that one isn't a dragon or ancient dragon
EDIT: better use a pure piercing damage spear with dragonwound grease (+20% against ancient dragons) against those 2
@@Gorbag100 thank you very much, my friend. Love/hate how complex certain enemies are when it comes to weaknesses in these games lol.
Thanks for the information
Celebrant Rib-Rake is something that I never want to have to say aloud. I'm afraid it'd come out "Celebant wib-wake"
Fantastic video. 10/10
⭐️Outstanding spear presentation! ⭐️
Thanks for sharing.🙏🏼
Hoplite build would be sick thanks for the idea
Finally!!! Thank You
I named my character Kuroki Gensai AKA The Devil Lance and was maining a spear for a very long time. Twas very useful and helpful
Been waiting for this one for awhile lol, ty~♡
Only thing I hate about spears is that they are thrusting weapons. Thrusting weapons are OP but in my opinion they’re boring.
This is why I love the Partisan. Got that heavy sweep when needed
Same! There are some like guardian tree spear that have unique move sets that’s not just a pokie poke only. Haha
Banished light halberd solves that and hits heavy. It can do a sweeping slash as well as a jumping downward slash.
Lol
Can’t wait for the great spear video!
This was a very helpful vid. I learned something as usual from the info. Thank you very much.
Finally, an adequate person in this comment section
I love this content so much!
Been waitin a long time for this!
I don’t know why but using a spear or staffs with such precision using the length as leverage for more powerful and precise attacks just tickles me right
Another awesome breakdown video. I see both a Zulu warrior and Spartan build in my future. "ZULU! ZULU!" "SPARTANS! What is your profession!?!?"
You mentioned Inquisitor's girandole being good for ng+, but didn't quite get the point across, it has one of the best dual wield dps (third best at max level), and significantly outranges the other high dps max level options, along with bleed build up. Optimal stat spread can be reached around ng+2. It also has similar scaling to the magma blades, which have the best dps in the entire game.
would be nice to follow up with the Great Spears.
Been waiting for this 😊
Edit: I was a little too excited and didn't realize they would not cover the big ol' spears (which is my favourite next to greatswords and katanas)
I would love to see a hammers showcase next!
Naginata and Patches' spear are the only spears I've used. And another call out for Daggers or Claws/Fists
It's too bad the Cleanrot Spear doesn't give more guard boost with that little shield and the defensive posture the Knights use. Thanks for the video!
Good video!
Another great vid! Thank you!
bro you guys still on elden ring....respect man...no joke
Dude love this build guides man. Any chance for some PvP builds?
Death Ritual Spear and staff for spiral shards, ambush, and thops barrier. I only really swing with it for criticals or charged heavy 2h attacks of opportunity. Also i have Bolt of gransax and glinstone kris, same story, though but with godfrey icon. The ash of war is basically another spell. Mimic tear spamming death ritual spear with you is a sight against larger targets. The summon doesnt use bolt of gransax correctly, but the knockdown effect I use to kite. If you time it right the target rolling becomes a rather insignificant issue
Nice! Great Spears next please!
I have a lovely pvp build using two clayman harpoons! One infused with magic in the offhand, and one uninfused so you can buff it in the main hand. It really chews through people
ahh the short spear, the king of spears for myself as a Prophet, I will admit I'm a touch biased since the Short Spear (and morningstar too) carried me through my first playthrough as a pure faith build and it complimented EVERY SINGLE STARTING INCANTATION/ASHES OF WAR WE FAITH USERS GET, and I'm including everything found in Limbgrave, Weeping Peninsula, and Stormveil Castle;
Catch Flame is the Prophets main form of up close and personal high damage, nothing beats its fp-damage efficiency for us, even late game it's a MONSTER. but spear allows you to either attack people trying to stay out of CF range or bait people to roll into your CF casts since it can also chain cast off of...pretty much any animations, CF is the faith builds Carian Slicer.
Heal gets some help from it as you can *technically* space out someone to get a cheeky heal in, i've done it a number of times and the level of aggressive action a player takes seeing you take that knee and let off a heal never gets old (and even better when you punish them with a stab or CF)
Flame Sling.. ah flame sling, how I love you, you've baited plenty of people into CF or my spear arts in the early levels and helped me with my crowd clearing issues
Flame of Frenzy, while being an obviously great early crowd/giant killer, again you can bait to bring someone closer for stabs with the spear.
Ah, my fellow spear enjoyer, I’m happy to see someone else who like playing with these delightful poking sticks
Keep em coming
hey Cas, big fan of your guides! I really want to play as a 2-handed spearman, is there any setup where you would recommend that?
I never imagined when I picked up an ugly harpoon from the goons in Siofra that it'd become one of the most important weapons in my playthrough.
You had the opportunity to call this video "Spear Tips" and you lost it.
9:08 sword and spear? That's a very cool concept
Needed this!
Golden great shield with barricade shield and bolt of gransax is such a good combo. Took me 2 try’s to beat malenia in my first ever souls run. (People may consider it cheese but it was fun for me)
Great spears and flairs would be nice. I wanna make a build around these but I can’t decide on what to do.
I did a Leonidas build with the Pike infused with the Spectral Lance, a Golden Greatshield and the Radahn's set. Pretty damn good!
I love how all his weapon videos are (*name of thing* are OP) no hate I am loving these videos
Also, Claymans Harpoon is the best weapon for Ice Spear, giving it more damage than with any other weapon.
Love this, but still waiting on my Great Spears vid 😅
hahaha! I love seeing my prediction I made about the celebrants rib rake (back in the colossal sword video) come true!
I recommend checking the occult scaling for the partisan if I remember correctly it's around 50 scaling better then heavy and keen which also opens the option for status greases
1) no. Occult infusion is always weaker scaling for arcane than either heavy for strength or keen for dex (depending on the weapon)
2) you cannot use greases on an occult weapon
Vykes War Spear FTW. GREAT Spears! Where are youuuuuuuu?
I've been waiting for this!
Can't wait for the great spears
Bolt of Gransax almost made me change from a strength faith to a dex build
In pvp, weapon range decides SO much!
I've taken out so many people duel wielding the cross naginata, and i SUCK!
Duel cross naginata is one of the most cancerous setups so it's understandable.
@@common_undead I think it's because, unlike with other spears, the double power attack is a faster extending forward strike, makes attacking, and instantly rolling away so much easier. But tbh, with the amount of sheer magic spammers in pvp, i honestly don't feel guilty about it. I bow before and after fights, rather than being a toxic dick when winning, plus i wear near 0 armor, the rotten duelist set, Elden Bling ect,
Seeing as it can only be used on select weapons and actually works quite well, I’m disappointed the ice spear ash of war wasn’t at least mentioned.
Babe wake up new Fextralife lore just dropped
Flails Please!
Not joking, I like them. My first play through was dual Flails and they've been buffed since launch, so it be cool to see some Flail love.
I always wanted to beef up the black knight flail as I love their armor, it's what I always wear. As far as armor do you think elden ring emphasizes agility or players tactical skills for defense over your armor choice? I do, but am curious what other players think.
My first run was with Tree spear. Astel was a MF with his twig legs and high torso lock on. So much easier on other weapon types in other runs.
