We call them cicadas in the US and we only see them once every several years. My girlfriend in Mae Sot says the thai word for cicada is pronounced "juk-a-jun". จักจั่น

I thought it was a Cicada as well. We have them in Australia but my Thai partner said it was a large cricket. The Thais eat them. They are really loud and continuous sound for hours.
