  • In this video I show you how I painted a realistic ocean wave. I get so many questions asking how I paint realistic water so here is an example of one of the ways I approach it. Painting water with oils is different with every single painting, but I hope this demonstration can give you an idea of how to use oil paints! This is just one way of doing it, oil painting is vast world filled with endless possibilities, so don't be afraid to experiment!

I am an artist residing in sunny, warm [humid] florida! My paintings are heavily inspired by nature and its beauty. I work primarily in oil paint, and sometimes watercolor. I prefer to work in a mostly realistic style and occasionally experiment outside of that. I post oil painting time lapses, painting lessons and tutorials, drawings, art tips, and occasionally artist vlogs where I share bits of my life as an artist. Creating art is my greatest passion and I'm thankful for the chance to share it with you. ♥

I just finished an oil painting and this video is so relatable! Everything you have said about how long it takes, the back and forth, the having to walk away sometimes and come back, figuring it out as you go, and about agonizing about perfecting the final details is completely spot on for me. I go through all the same things and just went through it with my most recent painting. This video is a reminder that it is normal to go through these things while working through a painting, it is all part of the process, and that each piece is different. Beautiful piece and a wonderful video!

👋 I’m a 52 yr old married female with two adult children and two living at home. I’m not naturally “paint” talented but felt pretty sapped trying to meet others needs as a mom/wife and decided to carve out personal time doing something that rejuvenated me. Mid life crisis? Lol Over the last year I’ve watched video after video of others and felt a strong desire/pull to have painting be my outlet but also felt like I was struggling to connect the dots with the tutorials about color, tone, technique... I even took a local class. Then I ran across you! Your tutorials are giving me more insight than anyone else. Things are “clicking” now. Before, I stuck to abstract because... well... no expectations or critiquing right? Anyhow, I painted an eyeball last week (of all things), and it actually looked like an eyeball. 👁 You should feel satisfaction in your art but also in knowing your inspiring others. Thank you!

Wow, that is absolutely amazing to watch. I've only done 5 oil paintings in my life, Bob Ross style. I haven't painted for 4 months or so. Using a reference sounds like a great idea but knowing your colors and how to manipulate shadow seems to be the key to a good oil painting from what I just saw from your painting. Correct me if I'm wrong. Again awesome job and thank you for the great video...

Lena thank you for cheerfully sharing this demo. I teach too and it is hard for someone who is beginning to understand how much we have to keep moulding the subject. Water is my fav.
One time a guy commented innocently enough "so you just draw it on and fill in the spaces right?" Well there wasn't time to explain that the process is a lot more difficult than he imagined. "

I don't know how but whenever i'm depressed of certain things you post a video speaking about the same things ..you bring me back out from the hole! That is why i love u. For instance it was about that everyone in my college does alla prima..but i like layering..but everybody thinks i'm an idiot wasting time.. I like realism with tiny details but my teacher tells that realism is a thing of olden times and i should work on abstract pieces with deep meanings...and she says that realism is just copying an already existing thing..which is not at all interesting or creative but i don't understand that how can i distort a painting without learning its realistic face. She told if i want to be a top artist i have to change my style. This whole thing pushed me into a deep hole for almost a year i was depressed and thought i was not made for painting and i don't know anything..and i was told my art was immature... I didn't wanted to paint at all.. Currently its summer break so i'm relieved . Can you please make a video talking about this without a tutorial or anything..just pure talk ...because i'm so confused...i love you..

Not all schools are created equal, not all artists are created equal, and certainly not all teachers are created equal. I’ve gotten so many comments like that from random people and they’re useless to me 😂 I’m still earning a living off my art and people who appreciate this kind of art are still out there finding artists like me, and buying our work or supporting it by other means. The world is too vast with far too many different kinds of people to make such bold statements about what kind of art is going to bring you success. There are entire art schools dedicated to teaching realism, it will never be a dead art so long as we keep it alive and continue to evolve it ourselves. And certainly, there is an audience for it. Your teacher’s opinion is just an opinion and not a fact. I’m sorry you have to deal with that discouragement and are surrounded by unsupportive people. Don’t let them influence your happiness and artistic path, create what feels right for you ❤️

We have cats and they have to sit right in the middle of the table where I am painting. So in order to not poison them I have not been using my Oil paints. Not until I get a screened porch door on that studio will I be able to oil paint. Love Terri Simmers. P.S. Keep Oil Painting.

So, this is absolutely crazy! I'm an absolute beginner and self taught. Found exact photo on my computer that I downloaded some months ago, don't remember how that happened! Clearing up some space on my laptop came across the photo and decided to paint it! Wow!!! What was I thinking?!? Never painted water before so I ended up with hours of work getting nowhere while wasting so much paint and creating more mess instead, getting so frustrated I am about to throw it all away because of so much paint on the canvas, it's ridicules and almost unworkable any more. Then this video came as YT suggestion, mind blowing! (Except we now know tech spy on us, so probably is not just a "coincidence".) Anyway, beautiful work and thank you very much for this!!! ❤️ Subscribed! ❤️❤️❤️

I love that idea most of the time i restrict myself to what is their and i am not always happy with it but i can keep mixing the paint even if it is on the canvas.

Fabulous demo and an awesome painting - love it - I will have to look at more of your videos on oil painting - I just can't seem to enjoy oil painting, your paint looks to flow so well onto the canvas, not dry or sticky. I will have to watch more of your videos to find out how you achieve this. I am okay painting on the first sitting but if I come back in a day or so it tacks up and then I have to wait forever to paint over it

Lena, thank you for a really good tutorial. I also paint in oils and often have these same issue s you mention throughout. It takes me on average about three weeks to complete a painting although that is dependent on the subject matter and whether the composition is simple or more involved. One thing that I tend to worry about in the art world and that is the danger of becoming a clone adopting someone else's style and subjects. That said though, everyone has to start somewhere in order to learn or perfect there art, which is why it is wonderful that there are genuine artists like yourself out there on the worldwide Web teaching all the basics and the pitfalls of being an artist or just simply making art for the love of it. Thank you Lena. I look forward to more of the same from you x

You are a joy to watch, your voice is relaxing and makes your teaching easier to grasp as you explain each brush strokes.
