2020 Honda Odyssey vs 2020 Kia Sedona | Can Kia take down the mighty Odyssey?

  • Since I already compared the 2020 Toyota Sienna XLE to the 2020 Honda Odyssey EX-L and 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L, people wanted to the winning Odyssey take on the final competitor in the segment, which happens to be the Kia Sedona. So today we pit the Odyssey EX-L against the Sedona SX to see which is the King of the minivans for 2020.
I evaluate the vans in seven different categories, with a rating from one to five in those categories.
    They are as follows:
    1. Value (Price and features of each vehicle)
    2. Safety (Both active safety features and passive IIHS results)
    3. Power-train and performance (Engine, transmission, 0-60 time)
    4. Fuel Economy (EPA rated fuel efficiency)
    5. Reliability (Rated by Consumer Reports)
    6. Styling (How each car looks, from my point of view)
    7. Functionality (How well the car performs intended function)

I've been buying Kia Sedona for over ten years, and I just love the reliability and durability, and power. The first one, I drove over 175,000 miles in 8 years but got into an accident and totaled.(not my fault, and got 15,000 dollars from insurance.) I, of course, bought the newer version of Sedona SX trim and have been driving for about three years, like the first one, I am having no issues and enjoying it so much. I've also had two Optimas leased last 6 years for my son and He just loves his car. Oh man, I recommend Kia to anyone...

I agree with a few other's sentiments. On the Honda side, I have owned an: 97, 04, 08, 10. On the Kia side, I've owned an: 05, 06, 08, 2018. All my Honda's had transmission problems regardless of superb maintenance. Some were recalled and replaced while others were on me. My 08 & 10 Odysseys were bought new and sold with well over 100k miles. My 05 Kia had a piston issue at 194k miles. My 06 Kia had timing chain issues at 94k miles. My 08 and 2018 had zero issues and I sold my 08 with 99k miles. My 2018 I bought brand new. I traded it at 62k miles as all my kids are now grown. I do however, regret getting rid of the 2018. That was SUCH an amazing van but, my "manliness" wanted a truck. Now my wife has a Kia Soul and I have a truck.
Overall, I had less maintenance issues, less dealer visits for random things (e.g. squeeks, rattles, bad AV system, etc.), longer tire life, and more comfort in the Kia vans. The Honda's always felt like I was just filling a niche need with a van due to 4 kids while the Kia's always seemed sporty and car'ish (the Kia's didn't hurt my manliness as much). My wife and I had one and there were many years where I had a Kia and she had the Honda at the same time. When it came to going to dinner or long trips, with all of us, we took the Kia's everytime. There's something to be said about that. We always felt like the Kia's were more comfortable (the kids like the Kia's better too). The kids always said it was easier to hear everyone in the Kia's. The Honda's seats were so much harder and on short trips always hurt my back and butt. Of all the Kia's I owned, the 05 was by far the most comfortable minivan I ever owned. It was like driving your couch where the Honda's always felt like driving a park bench. As for costs, I also ALWAYS got the Kia's for far less than the Honda's.

I am looking to replace my 2005 Sienna, so I test drove a Sedona today. I liked everything except the inability to remove the second row of seats. I've used my Sienna basically as a cargo van its whole life with the second row seats removed and the third row stowed away. It works great for hauling bicycles out of the elements and it's nice to put a big cooler behind the front seats for vacations. The fact that I can't do this with the Sedona is a deal breaker for me.

And don't forget halogen brake lights on the Honda except for the third brake light ...and all three brake lights are LEDs for the Kia Sedona...👍.. If that was the 2019 kia Sedona sxl+ the numbers would be even higher Odyssey wouldn't stand a chance... Kia cut back in 2020 in Canada .... no more dual sunroofs, no more Nappa leather, no more 19 inch chrome wheels, no more ice cube fog lights, and second row Lazy Boy Captain chairs!!

I have no clue where these very low highway MPG come from with the Kia Sedona. I mainly drive mine in the city but the few times I have gone on the freeway I'm getting 29 MPG, and this is city/highway combined. I can only suspect if I take a much longer trip on the highway I'll get above 29 MPG. If you drive mostly in the city the Sedona only gives you 19 tops no matter what, just about the same as the Odyssey, Sienna and Pacifica.
I also have a Toyota Sienna and all these are fantastic cars but the Kia Sedona is the best bang for the buck.

    • @Allcarseveryday
      @Allcarseveryday  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Definitely agree with the Kia being the best bang for your buck. I just use the EPA numbers for fuel economy because that's the only objective rating I have and it's how each car is rated officially when it goes on sale. Good to hear that you are beating those estimates though!

Air vents in rear do not blow from top anymore now on sides and not hard like the older vans. Honda blew a big portion of the market this this decision, if your looking for an upgrade and loved the things you used to love. Now I hear the sienna middle seats will not remove!! I’m lost.

Might be a tough one, but typically I just use the polls as a way to see which one I should do first. All of my previous contenders in polls before have since been released or are currently in progress, regardless of whether they 'won' their poll or not. So pretty much no matter what, I will do the Escape v RAV4 comparison. It just may take me a little bit!

I've had a Honda Odyssey, they are AWFUL. I've also had others Hondas and they have been stellar. For some reason the Odyssey has given Honda fits, instead of a score of 3 they deserve a score of 1 or 0 for reliability. We just purchased a 2020 Sedona and it's been flawless so far. If you told me I would ever have bought a Kia over a Honda I would say you are crazy, however in this case the Sedona is superior.

    • @RodgerRossman

My oddessy had to have a new antenna the first day off the lot. Then the wiring system for the entire entertainment system had to be replaced due to loud static popping. Twice while driving the entire display went dead for a few seconds. The touch screen often decides I am not worthy and refuses to acknowlege my touches. The road crash detection often attempts to stop the car because another car in the opposite lane is seen as a hazard on a sharp curve. The windows roll down automatically (and I have never asked them to do so), but don't roll up that way, so I have to go out in the rain to roll them up! The car alert signal is less than audible when it locks and there is no way to make the horn beep instead. I've hit my head on the raised tailgate many times and I am only 5ft8in. My basic model 2021 does not have a navigation system nor an automatic tailgate. It has no usb port for the middle row of seats and the single usb in the back is behind the back row. The sliding doors close slowly and if they finish while you are walking away, the car will not auto lock leaving the contents vulnerable to theft. I will not purchase another!

I have to say, the stow and go option is completely overrated. If you are a small child, they are fine, but if you are a teenager or an adult those seats are so uncomfortable. I would rather have the Sedona as the seats move all the way up. But let's be honest those few times we need to move the seats all the way up is not worth it, my opinion. I'll go with the Sedona.

Odessey has lost its spit because of the 9 speed transmission and the "earth dreams" engine. Both have poor reliability.
Your minivan choices for best value are as follows:
    Cheap- Chrysler Voyager
    Mid-kia Sedona
    Expensive-Chrysler Pacifica
