  • A review of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 2 Rhaenyra The Cruel. Truly and outstanding episode that has some of the best dialogue scenes in the series that even rivals Game of Thrones. And Erryk-Bowl was really well done.

I spent all night trying to appease the relentless copyright detection system and made about 40 iterations of this video. That’s why there’s a black screen towards the end of the video and trust me, for whatever reason YT’s system would not accept the video if that portion wasn’t a black screen. Even putting text there over the black screen caused the detection system to flag other parts of the video for some reason. I was basically rolling the dice with every export and hoping one passed. With that said, if I run into a similar problem next week which is likely, I might switch to using stills instead of short clips.

Yo unrelated but to bring up a point of yours, yes the series did not make a point to add more depth or flesh out the characters of the twins.
It was made to be as such, their characters are literally the HotD equivalent of Yorren if u think about it, only this time instead of for plot progression, their deaths serve the cruel thematic purpose of how these conflicts in the realm is turning brother against brother.

I always hate it when people call Otto a lesser Tywin. Sure, he made mistakes, but let's not forget that Tywin was commanding one of the most powerful houses in the realm, while Otto is a second son with not a single bannerman to his name.
It was a LOT harder for Otto to command the room and turn the kingdom to his advantage, because unlike Tywin he has no tens of thousands of soldiers and endless stores of gold to back up his words. He has to go by mostly on wit alone. He can't just threaten his way to success, he has to actually convince people and make them believe the ideas he plants in their head, are actually their own.

    • @PristianoPenaldoSUIIII
      @PristianoPenaldoSUIIII 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +133

People say that because they're both schemers whose priority is the position of their house. But you're right, Tywin ruled through strategic use of fear and a commanding presence. Everyone around him bought into he idea that he was the most powerful man in the realm, that he was better, smarter, more cunning and utterly ruthless. Not that Otto is a particularly gentle soul, but he gained allies and maintained their trust through more of a wise grandfather persona. Seeming like he was giving sage advice.
I do think You're underestimating the power and political prestige of house Hightower at the time but the key difference is that Otto lived during a time when dragons ruled, while Tywin didn't. It's impossible for anyone without a dragon to maintain power on a national scale the way Tywin did while another house commands flying nukes.

Tywin was an absolute idiot and so are his bootlickers.
Bruh destroyed his own family through his own parenting. He alienated all his kids, his literal future, to the point Jaime has thanks god gone on his own path, Cersei is destroying everything he worked so hard to build and Tyrion is on his way to aiding his enemy's daughter.
I hate how people drink Tywin's greatness kool-aid. He was horrible. And he died as he lived, stinking.

@@PristianoPenaldoSUIIIIYes, House Hightower (even in the main GoT story) was a very powerful and wealthy house, probably the most powerful and wealthy house outside of the great houses, but remember that Otto is the second son, and currently only the uncle of the current ruler of Oldtown. He is powerful, yes, but not like Tywin, who was the actual leader of house lannister, unlike Otto. Even if Otto wanted to use the power of house Hightower, he depends on his older brother or his nephew to wield that power, unlike Tywin, who could just do whatever the hell he wanted in the Westerlands. And even in that case the Hightowers are still subordinate to the Tyrells and there are several other powerful "minor" houses in the Reach like the Florents, the Tarlys, the Redwynes and the Peakes.

One thing worth noting about this episode, the actor that plays Criston Cole has had to limit comments in his social media as the amount of fans directing hate at him is getting a bit much. Asking outright questions like "Where were you when the prince was murdered?". Even the actor for Cheese got hate because people believed he actually kicked the dog. Maybe he made the calculation that through this confrontation he either makes Aegon see sense or he loses a position that is becoming increasingly undermined anyway.
Though I admit, implying Viserys didn't choose Aegon and questioning the validity of his claim is a bad move, for sure. Not only does the risk to Otto's own position and relationship with Aegon far outweigh any potential benefits of such an utterance, I doubt it has any potential upsides. Worst case Aegon feels even more resentful of his father and strays further from the path, instead of wanting to live up to Viserys' memory, which may have kept him somewhat in line with his father's wishes.

Despite the story's clear 'good versus bad' narrative, it ultimately reveals that the 'good' faction was just as flawed as the 'bad.' First he broke his oath of celibacy, then full on murdered two innocent people in separate instances. In the last episode though, he 100% fails in his solemn duty as Kingsguard, his Prince being beheaded in the next room over while Criston continues violating his sacred vow of celibacy with Alicent. He totally could've stopped the assassination.
This episode features a lot of scenes of him and Alicent dealing with the grief and guilt of their actions, Cole feeling that he's well beyond the point of redemption. The scene with him watching the servants dismantle the bed the Prince was murdered in is heavy for his character too. He witnesses the mattress soaked with the child he swore to protect's blood, and is forced to stand in shame as it's slowly carried right by him.
I hate Criston Cole as a character. He acts like his honor is a big deal, but besmirches it as often as he can. Then he gets upset about it and takes his frustration out on others, usually to their detriment and his own benefit. He's extremely mentally unstable, having already tried to kill himself twice in the show so far because of guilt for his misdeeds. Scenes like what I described though really cement how much of a coward and bad person that he is, which in my opinion is extremely great writing.

I think you have a misunderstanding of how TV writing works; just because someone's name is tied on as the "writer" of THAT episode, doesn't necessarily mean they were the ones to "write" it. Often times it means they drew up the first draft before the writing team as a whole tackles it together, sometimes it doesn't mean that all. We have no idea what structure they're following in the HotD writer's room, but I can tell you without a doubt Sara Hess isn't writing these specific episodes on her own lol.

I really loved the mirrored scenes we get from Helaena and Rhaenyra. When the hops rain down on Helaena and then later in the episode we see Rhaenyra and what looks like dust floating around her, it kind of looks like ashes which is appropriate cause it symbolizes not just the loss both mother's are grappling with, but foreshadowing the coming war and the ashes the dragons are going to leave behind while the realm burns and tears itself apart.

Stunning performance from everyone but personally I think Otto delivers. He reminds me of Tywin so much, the patience throughout the series until finally the grieving, impulsive Targ King turning his head upside down! Don't mess with House Hightower!

I felt bad for Aegon. Sure, he is insane, but he truly loved his son and his death clearly broke him. Also him wanting to give the flock back to the farmer and wanting to be a good king in general makes him more sympathetic.

The acting performances from both actors in the scene where Daemon and Rhaenyra are arguing is Oscar Worthy. This is one of those scenes that I'm going to come back to eventually and watch again. I legitimately felt like I was in the room with them as they were arguing and I tensed up when Daemon threw what looked like a goblet and walked towards Rhaenyra. I thought that he was going to choke her again. I just think it's annoying how Daemon is selfish to a certain extent.

First half of the episode: love this shit, the acting is amazing across the board
Second half of the episode: oh, so they’re going all in on making the Greens cartoonish villains…

I think an interesting way they could have cut the fight scene would have been to take it from Rhaenyra's perspective. She watches and can keep tabs on which brother is which and cuts away as she tries to do something before going back. But during that time, you still have a good chance of keeping track. Then there's a cut away, probably when she tries to open the locked door, where it cuts to her trying to open it, then there's a crash and it cuts back to the brothers on the floor (and perhaps they roll or something similar to confuse their positioning), and suddenly no one knows which is which. If Rhaenyra wanted to order the other guard in to help, she needs to be certain of the identities of each brother. When that information becomes unreliable, she can't risk giving such a command. Cutting like that, I think, would allow for more on-screen choreography, while still achieving the intent of uncertainty in who won the fight.

Some of the decisions of this episode make sense because they come to be important later, but they also work in the creative sense because we get to see all sides of the story: the smallfolk, minor characters, etc.

For me, it was the whole funeral scene. Many of the scenes of the show are either one-on-one debates or big CGI scenarios for battles. However, the funeral didn't commit to any of those types. It had the larger scale of a battle, but without any kind of violence. It hadn't either that much of communication between characters. So, it was, after all, a big scenario dedicated to portray the pain within Allicent and Haelena. And holly guacamole, how much they did. The crops in the air, the levels of the chariot they're on, the way their veils moves and deforms their faces... It was amazing. I got chills after chills after chills, from the moment the door opens to show the chariot, to the oats in the wind, to their close-ups... I love the amazing treatment the scene received. Normally, that display only appears on war scenes, so many women don't have the opportunity to appear in them. It was great see the role that the patriarchy has reserved to the women in Westeros and how they are expected to battle those wars. It truly conveyed the spirit of geat funeral scenes, both real and fictional, as Lady Di's one or The Godfather's one. A truly amazing scene.
