15:00 In Eagle’s defense, it seems like Morrigan’s charms don’t work on several characters. 😅 How many times have we seen a win quote against Morrigan that involved a character either ignoring her advances or outright rejecting her? 🤔
Thank you Tophat for including the Udon comics lore. While they take place in a diffrent continuity the events help flesh out the character backstories.
They really should. But then again, waiting for Capcom to do what I want with SF almost never happens. Case in point, the rainbow color explosion that is SF6's general art style and GFX.
To me the 7th generation console was the time after the Super SFII Turbo HD Remix while some major figjting games such as Guilty Gear and King of Fighters were still making 2D games with HD sprites. Sadly the concept was abandoned be Capcom despite recycling the 2008 Udon's sprites for Ultra SF II.
Fun Fact: Joe was originally going to be in Alpha 3, redesigned as an escaped prisoner. But during development, they decided to make it Cody instead. Which, annoyingly, saddled Cody with his awful prisoner gimmick for many years.
There is something charming about Ryu's design in SF1 Red head Ryu is cool. He looks fit but not hyper muscular like in later games. Like Goku in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai Arc (Piccolo Jr. Saga)
Capcom was race and gender swapping characters before if became popular. Now, it seems like every Marvel and DC character is gender or race swapped. Ahead of their time?
I refuse to entertain the notion that Mike, the African-American boxer who was banned for excessive violence, and Mike Bison, the African-American boxer who was banned for excessive violence, are two separate characters.
Also the only thing that “proves” him and Balrog are different characters is a dream. I believe they were always supposed to be the same character but Capcom retconned it for some reason
lol yeah obviously Mike = Mike Bison, but Capcom doesn't want to be sued, hence retconning the SF2 same character as a different one and the name switches.
Mike was not a boxer at first... He's a bare-knuckle underground pugilist till he got sent to prison where he's taught pro boxing by a fellow prisoner and gets released later Also one big difference between Mike and Bison is preference on wearing boxing gloves
Joe, he got an official art card during promotion for Street Fighter 5, I think. He is also a suspected cameo in Final Fight Streetwise, which I do think Tophat has mentioned. He was a very basic character in the first game, yet I look forward to seeing him in more games. There is a lot that can be given to him in stories, moves, and design. I guess I just like seeing an actual street fighter in the franchise and not just action movie heroes.
You're referring to the character named "Ghost" I believe, who you'd fight in Little Italy. Could very well be the intended cameo of Joe, like they featured Cammy as an opponent too.

Terry in SNK is just Joe reimagined. Terry's full name is Terry Joseph Bogard. The dev that made Terry used to be a dev, part of the OG street fighter. That dev wanted Joe to be the main character and rhat was did not happen. So when he became a part of SNK he remade Joe as Terry.
While the OST of Street Fighter 1 is decent (there are some hidden gems), the AST (Arranged Soundtrack) from the console port (PC Engine) is amazing!! I highly recommend listen Birdie, Joe, Eagle, Mike, Lee's themes in the AST Also the remixes of SF1 tracks in SFV are very well done! 🎵
They should definitely bring that Ninja GEKI back, Street Fighter misses a proper Ninja that most Fighting Games have. He would make a good addition to the Roster, his Outfit looks Cool too.
Awesome clip. My avatar in sf6 is modeled after Joe. I also previously had Mike and a Geki outfit. So far no one has commented on it when I visit the lobbies.
I think they should eventually put all the characters of SF1 as playable characters in future Street Fighter Games. Seeing Joe or Lee in a game would be awesome!
I figure if Capcom decides to create a few new characters for SFVII (or even better, a much needed Street Fighter Beta/Bravo between 2 and 3), they might as well be Mike, Joe or Lee.
I don't think Eagle was gay. I think he's just there for business only, and as a fighter, you can't allow yourself to fall for female opponents because it could cause you to lose focus of the fight and not to keep your guard up as much as you should and you might not fight as hard as you would have otherwise. We already know that Morrigan uses her charm on men for that specific reason. So why put yourself at that disadvantage? Just stick to business, get the job done, and leave. Now if he was actually hitting on some of the guys, I might be more inclined to believe he was gay. But until that happens, he's straight in my book.
Nah, fam. Nishiyama is on record saying his design was inspired by Freddie Mercury. Back then no one lived eternally offended. That's also why no one complained about the other English rep being a literal hooligan.
@@mappybc6097 Oh, I see. I looked up Freddy Mercury and apparently he was bi. Maybe only Eagle's image was modeled after Freddy's and not his lifestyle? After all, Eagle doesn't act all flamboyant like his real life counterpart.
@@EriknocTDW Go look up his Alpha 3 japanese win quotes. If there was any agenda, it was on Capcom's USA part who replaced them all with generic fighting game lines.
I remember Eagle appearing in a Gameboy Advanced port of one of the Alpha games and he was a tonne of fun!! I knew he was gay, but never knew about the Freddie Mercury inspiration Underrated character that I hope sees more exposure. Any other Eagle fans out there?
5:08 they turned birdie black because they wanted that behavior associated with Native and African Americans who also often rocked Mohawks and had brown skin 😮
Eagle is the most interesting Street Fighter from SF1 despite his obscurity in the SF roster even though he was an expanded fighter in SFA3 Max it was said that that his Martial Art was Bojutsu not Bartitsu which might’ve been a typo in Alpha 3 Max little known fact his character design was said to be based off the villain Petrov from the Bruce Lee film Fists of Fury
That’s because Capcom messed Alpha 1's plot up. The moment when Ryu scars Sagat and turns evil for the first time, should’ve taken place in Ryu's SFA1 ending.

Pretty legit opportunity. Missed opportunity to not have the real obsure SF1 characters like Geki show up in the SF6 World Tour mode as mini bosses. I hope that is fixed though in SF6 season 2 and beyond
I always kind of wonder for many years now that Retsu kind of reminds me that its possible he's a Shorinji Kempo practitioner in terms of his posture and hand positioning.
Joe to me looks like a character named Joe from a 80s ninja franchise called American Ninja. There are are a bunch of films that franchise. They were made by Cannon films.
Mike from SF1 does actually make an appearance in SF2. In the intro cut scene where there's two people fighting and the camera pans up the building behind them to reveal title. Mike is the guy getting knocked out before camera pans up.
Joe was supposed to appear in Alpha 3 but the idea got changed mid-development. It's why we got jailbird Cody since that was the original idea for Joe.
Unpopular opinion Capcom vs SNK 2 was the best game the Street Fighter 2 characters were ever in, probably the greatest beat em up ever made (unlike SNK vs Capcom which were terrible)

Dude, your channel is so awesome that I pause a video and "pre-like" it before I've even watched it (because I know it's going to be awesome because you are awesome). Appreciate you bro, you are a legend. 👍
I doubt making Birdie black had anything to do with DEI; if your game's entire premise is travelling the world to beat people up, limiting your roster to a small handful of races would be boring.
Mike and Joe are the very definition of "generic street fighter", who could possibly want them back?, specially when we have Balrog and Cody, who are much better versions of them?.
Correction Top Had. Eagle's updated sprite 1st appeared in Capcom vs SNK2. They imported the sprite as an extra added character in home version of Alpha 3.
Great video. I love ninjas so it is criminal the ninjas in SF are so non-ninja looking(at least pop culture ninja looking). Geki would be a great character(s) to bring back as a counterpoint to Vega...but no, we have to get beyond terrible characters like Rufus because reasons.
At one time, I wanted to make a MUGEN game with every Street Fighter character. Then I realized trying to make a MUGEN game is very difficult. Just collecting the sprites from SFA3 was sooo time consuming!
The original streetfighter deserves a remake and deserves to have way more better controls, the angry video game nerd would call it “street fighter the good edition”
5:06 I swear I heard "and lactate strong back story" 😂 And Gen reminds of those corner shops here in Hong Kong which always claim they are having a massive sale, coz they are closing down in, say, 3 months, but still there after a year. Lol
Joe was based on Joe Lewis the kickboxer from the 70s and early 80s. Look him up. He even has the exact red pants as the SF1 Joe. Eagle seems to be inspired by Robert Baker who dresses exactly like Eagle in Fist of Fury and fights Bruce Lee
Didn't the creator of Street Fighter The First and also Fatal Fury say the character on the title was supposed to be a proto Terry Bogard? Or am I misremembering? If true I think it'd be sick to bring him back as a Terry Bogard reference. Call him like Jerry Hogarth.
Good stuff I enjoyed this 1 😉, I never ever came across a Street fighter 1 arcade machine until almost 2 years later in the early 90's , I was looking for a Street fighter 2 machine as that was the craze at the time , I found the original street fighter while doing so just 1 time , I Guess no 1 really cared about a Street Fighter 1 as 2 only was on everyone's minds because of the phenomenonal impact it made but I often wondered about what happened to these characters after until now , this is the 1st time a TH-cam channel has discussed the topic , further more I think you can still use these Street fighter 1 forgotten characters in modern street fighter games I mean Chun Li never sent projectiles until Hyper fighting and Dhalsim started teleporting , Zangief , Blanka , E Honda , all got new moves added.
Holy cow. I remember playing karate champ and it never even DAWNED on me that Ken and Ryu were "inspired" by that game. The red and white should have given it away. I wonder if that is actually verifyable. The modern street fighter games should re introduce the lost original charactrs but update for today of course. It would be awesome to have them all enter the game saying "Remember us!?" lol

15:00 In Eagle’s defense, it seems like Morrigan’s charms don’t work on several characters. 😅
How many times have we seen a win quote against Morrigan that involved a character either ignoring her advances or outright rejecting her? 🤔
Thank you Tophat for including the Udon comics lore.
While they take place in a diffrent continuity the events help flesh out the character backstories.
Eagle's construction company gets a shout out in SF6 lol
I always thought it was Joe and Mike fighting in the intro of street fighter 2
I would love to see Capcom “collect” all of these Alpha variant sprites, create the last few, & make a “high-definition” Street Fighter 1
Prisoner Cody was 🔥 , I hate Mayor Cody!
There is something charming about Ryu's design in SF1
Red head Ryu is cool.
He looks fit but not hyper muscular like in later games.
Like Goku in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai Arc (Piccolo Jr. Saga)
His papal shoes were weird tho. I mean, even Ken, a mere palette swap, doesn't wear shoes. Why would a karateka wear shoes while fighting anyway?
I didn't know Birdie was supposed to be black in SF Alpha. I thought he just got a tan.
.... Turkish U.K. migrant agenda 🤔
Yeah yeah, very funny 😂
Capcom was race and gender swapping characters before if became popular. Now, it seems like every Marvel and DC character is gender or race swapped. Ahead of their time?
And a bee stung him in the lips!
Haha same. At the time(10 years old), I didn't know there was a significant amount of British people with darker skin.
the guy who punches the logo is no other but Terry Bogard according to the game creators.
So lee is most likely Jamie's dad if yun and yang are his cousins
I refuse to entertain the notion that Mike, the African-American boxer who was banned for excessive violence, and Mike Bison, the African-American boxer who was banned for excessive violence, are two separate characters.
Also the only thing that “proves” him and Balrog are different characters is a dream. I believe they were always supposed to be the same character but Capcom retconned it for some reason
lol yeah obviously Mike = Mike Bison, but Capcom doesn't want to be sued, hence retconning the SF2 same character as a different one and the name switches.
Mike was not a boxer at first... He's a bare-knuckle underground pugilist till he got sent to prison where he's taught pro boxing by a fellow prisoner and gets released later
Also one big difference between Mike and Bison is preference on wearing boxing gloves
I always thought Joe and Mike were the two guys fighting at the start of the Streetfighter 2 intro.
I remember this street fighter being in a washhouse back in like 1988
That's so rare… Because all I see at wash houses are Street Fighter II cabinets.
@@KenMasters. It was in Fort Myers off MLK Blvd had to be around 87 or 88 I was either 3 or 4 at the time. It was in a wash house across the street from a place called Mccullum Hall ( where all the old jazz greats like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong would come down to SWFL and play) I have a really great memory from my younger years talking I still remember when I was 2 years old walking around with the toy that had the different color marbles in it that popped up as you pushed it so I'm 100 percent sure it was on arcade at one point and in that wash house.
Canonically, Street Fighter II is the sequel to Street Fighter but spiritually, Street Fighter II is the sequel to Final Fight AKA Street Fighter ‘89!
Not sure i get that
@@Kain5th SFll IS the sequel to SFl but earlier in the game’s development, Capcom were going to name it Final Fight ll but they never did because it had no real connection to the main characters of the og Final Fight but in later games they confirmed both games to be canon in the same timeline so hope this helps clear up some stuff.

I highly recommend listen Birdie, Joe, Eagle, Mike, Lee's themes in the AST
Also the remixes of SF1 tracks in SFV are very well done! 🎵
All these years, I thought it was Cody that punched the wall with the street fighter jacket.
Then who punched it then 15:54
@@kevingaje4654It was Joe.
Man, i really do appreciate your love amd knowledge on fighters and beat em ups. You never fail to impress!
I figure if Capcom decides to create a few new characters for SFVII (or even better, a much needed Street Fighter Beta/Bravo between 2 and 3), they might as well be Mike, Joe or Lee.
Instead of Maki, Yun, and Ingrid.
Capcom should've brought back the rest of the Street Fighter I veterans for Alpha 3.
I did not think that in big 2024 , post naruto, I would hear someone mispronounce "shuriken"
I would legit buy an Ultra version of Street Fighter I.
You forgot to mention that Joe was also seen in the non canon Final Fight Streetwise pitfights
He was named "Ghost" in that game, but definitely looked the part.
Very true
Lee obviously turned into Chun Li in Street Fighter 2...
Naw, Eagle loves the dinklage.
I appreciate you playing music from their levels in the background!
Eagle. I don't think he was a bouncer. As I recall, Eagle was the head Butler of the castle in his stage. Maybe he was retconned.
I'm surprised they didn't tie him in with Dudley
Eagle is so cool in alpha, hopefully someday he will come back in a title.
Joe is Joe Lewis - Grandfather of American Kick Boxing
Nah, I’m Joe Lewis.
Joe on the other hand is named after Joe Lewis, but is really based on Benny Urquidez because of the way he fights.
This was a great video! I enjoyed your breakdown of each character and how they fit in the overall Street Fighter universe.
I remember Eagle appearing in a Gameboy Advanced port of one of the Alpha games and he was a tonne of fun!!
I knew he was gay, but never knew about the Freddie Mercury inspiration
Underrated character that I hope sees more exposure.
Any other Eagle fans out there?
I think Joe was featured in Street Fighter2 opening when he punched the guy he fought and the camera then pan upwards to the building.
Those are Scott and Max. They've never been playable but they show up in the background of a SF5 stage.
Keep in mind that according to SF lore, Alpha 2 is a retcon of Alpha 1. Alpha 1 shouldn't be considered canon.
That’s because Capcom messed Alpha 1's plot up.
The moment when Ryu scars Sagat and turns evil for the first time, should’ve taken place in Ryu's SFA1 ending.
Geki fights Vega in Vega's SF5 ending

Pretty legit opportunity. Missed opportunity to not have the real obsure SF1 characters like Geki show up in the SF6 World Tour mode as mini bosses. I hope that is fixed though in SF6 season 2 and beyond
I always kind of wonder for many years now that Retsu kind of reminds me that its possible he's a Shorinji Kempo practitioner in terms of his posture and hand positioning.

Joe was supposed to appear in Alpha 3 but the idea got changed mid-development. It's why we got jailbird Cody since that was the original idea for Joe.

It's speculated the Geki was Vega's master. It's also speculated that Retsu is the old man in the movie Street Fighter ALpHA Generations.
Omg I wish Eagle to come back so fricking bad, hes an interesting character, he might even get with Dudley along etc. :)
Correction Top Had. Eagle's updated sprite 1st appeared in Capcom vs SNK2. They imported the sprite as an extra added character in home version of Alpha 3.
Joe actually did get an appearance in another Capcom game. He was a boss of an optional underground arena fight in Final Fight: Streetwise.

Eagle's character design was pretty much copied from the bad guy in the Bruce Lee movie, Fist Of Fury.
The original streetfighter deserves a remake and deserves to have way more better controls, the angry video game nerd would call it “street fighter the good edition”
Right time for Joe to make a return, having trained like crazy and be the boss of Street Fighter 7. It'll be a huge surprise.

Joe had the funniest voices in SF1. "Powa!" That spinkick, which he does a bunch. And, "Okay babyyy," when he wins.
Didn't the creator of Street Fighter The First and also Fatal Fury say the character on the title was supposed to be a proto Terry Bogard? Or am I misremembering?
If true I think it'd be sick to bring him back as a Terry Bogard reference. Call him like Jerry Hogarth.
Does Joe punch Mike in the first few seconds of the SF2 intro?
Damn. Even I had completely forgotten about Lee.
