  • We speak to Stanley F Botten who was the second in command of 2 Recce Regiment as well as a Hunter Group officer. It was from the Hunter Group that the idea to create South African Special Forces started. Only two of them are still alive, Col Botten, age 82, is one of them. He was also the SO1 for Ops Firewood, 1987, giving us valuable insight into what happened at higher command. Col Botten also wrote several books which will be discussed on Legacy Books in the future - links for the books are attached below. A fascinating conversation indeed. If you have questions for the colonel, please leave them below. Subscribe and activate the bell to be informed of new episodes.

I listened to this talk as I wanted to hear more on Ops Firewood. In my humble opinion it sounds like whoever planned this operation got it wrong or somewhere along the line they got the signals crossed, brave young South African soldiers paid the price that day , including 2 young parabats from my hometown Pinetown. Hearing this version of events, makes the sacrifice of all these SADF men even more of a waste, I hope that Koos can manage to get a Parabat or one of the other units, represented on that day , to come forward and tell their story and shine more light on what actually went down , RIP All , thanks for this fella coming on , and thanks Koos

Baie dankie Koos, vir hierdie onderhoud. Wat n Legende. Herinner my aan die mooi Afrikaanse woord, "Ouskool" in die ware sin van die woord. Ek sal jou nog n e-pos stuur; wil net in my Pa se ou fotos gaan navors. SF Botten moes 1962/1963 paaie gekruis het met my Pa op Youngsfield. My Pa was toe so 40jr oud en by die Youngsfield Opleidingskool n Stafsersant (of toe al AO1?) Onder-offisier in die Staandemag (& n Tweede Wereld Oorlog Veteraan).

I served on the Navy Strike Craft and the emblem was also a Scorpion as these boats had one hell of a sting in the tail.

When asked about Ops Firewood he spoke about new radios and engineers and migs and poor coms between troops and Saaf etc. So no definite clearance as to who or what was to fault killing 16 troops and wounding 54 Also there where were no artillery just four motar ratels. To set the record straight there were 126 Recce operators,141 Paratroops(not 20)and 605 from 101 Bn and many Casspir vehicles
This ops was badly planned ,where under gunned, had
poor intelligence assesment and poor communications To go and play Koevoet Koevoet against entrenched bases 250km inside Angola
    boggles the mind.

Granted. Lots of what you say can be true, but the fight on the day could have gone any way. I can bore you with hours of ramblings about what happened, what should have happened and what transpired on the day. Long and short is you cannot win all the fights. The same reason/(person) why we lost the last 3 fights at Cuito Cannevale was the reason for the buggerups at Firewood. If we never tried attacking a dug in base like Cuito there would never had been stories of the SADF losing he war. And we lost all 3 the last battles due to bad planning by the person in charge of the battle on those days. Remember in those days not agreeing with superiors was not heard of and could end up in court martial. Dankie Chris
