  • Peter M Lipman got called up to the Medical Corps, a place where he certainly did not wish to be and so he volunteered for 1 Parachute Battalion where he did his basics. During jump selection, he developed a hernia (he qualified for his wings in 1980) and was sent to Loathla Battle School from where he volunteered for 32 Battalion, then virtually unknown and very hush-hush. At 32 Battalion he joined the Recce Wing. Peter had many adventures including being at the Battle of Savate where the Battalion suffered its most losses ever in one engagement. Please note - At minute 39.34 Piet Nortje was mentioned, in fact, it was Piet van Eden and not Piet Nortje, thank you, Peter Lipman & Koos

I came into contact with Col Eddie Viljoen when our unit was deployed in Northern Natal. At this time (late 1989) Col Viljoen had taken up a post as OC at Eshowe Command (in the old prison) I and 2 other Bats were sent down to take over the security at the command because the Colonel was fed up with the lack of enthusiasm among the staff there with regards to day-to-day security.
Colonel Viljoen and the BSM (who was also para qualified although I unfortunately forget his name) were an absolute pleasure to work for. Surprisingly they both put up with our shenanigans and were complimentary about the creative ways we approached guarding the unit even though it did not always go down well with some of the other leader-group there.

Dear Peter, Koos. Peter, thank you for a true, honest and "humeristic" (but serious) recollection of your career. Peter, you are a great, honest and courageous person and soldier! I have the greatest respect for you! Great interview, thank you!

For me so strange to hear of the awesome legacy of the base I was responsible [in the tpt side] for in 1988 from Nepara.. Omaoni was one of three outer bases Nepara [OC ..Commandant Van Heerden] was responsible for. So strange it has such an illustrious history. I never knew. The airstrip we used was At Nepara by my time. South of Omaoni was another of the outer bases ..I met a medic... was recovering after a tank shot up his ambulance and killed 'his' doctor. He was very quiet.

Sir.. you were one of many thousands of NSM's to "process" their corporals droll. Make a cube, pass on, make a ball, pass on, make a cone, pass on.... as one of the smallest in my section I was near the end of the line and only got to make a smartie shape.

@@marc1sa90 Greetings Gary Duxbury I was the Sgt you mentioned and we were busy doing a medical course at the Oshikati Military hospital at the time. Gary was the naughtiest guy that I knew in 32 although he had some stiff competition from the likes of mischievous David Yates, Vet Doep du Plessis, Rick Automatic and others. Gary's redeeming feature was his steely blue eyes that always over impressed the fairer sex. Gary was also a solid soldier and we went places and did things together.
