Enjoyed hearing about Kwando base and often wondered what other forces occupied the base after we left. We arrived at Kwando 18 Dec 1975 and were told we were also on standby to go into Angola for Savanna if required. The base is still visible on Google maps. Knew KM was revved in 1977 i think it was but was surprised to hear Kwando was also revved. The bridge was steel in 1975 days and we had turns to protect it. Recce training was also done on the bridge one day when we were there, demolition theory i imagine. Cheers

I was flying aircraft from 12 years of age, obviously with rated private pilots from both virginia and other airports in Joburg. Taildraggers and tricycle gear. Piper Cherokee 140c,Cessna 150, and many others.....i could take off do the circuit and land. My highligh was flying a boeing 727 from Louis Botha to Jan Smuts by courtesy of the Capt whose chair i sat in.he told me the heading and the flight level ro maintain. I did......but i did check to see if the autopilot was on by carefully pulling up on the ailerons then settling them back. I checked the rudders....they were active.....that was the omg! 😮 Moment and the realisation i was in control if the 727. After about 25 minutes the captain came back with a grin and congratulated me. It was time to bleed off speed and hight and he tutored me through the drill to the point of stabilization of flight with flaps extension ...Capt took over for the landing........my highlight of my flying career. I could comfortably fly light aircraft......and when filled in my army papers to go to flight school i was sent to 5 sai......i was hacked off...im a born pilot... So wait another year and get sent to diskobolos kimberley😮 😝👺 I was pissed off.....these twats had a ready made pilot who can do aerobatics too in the Mr.plod harvards....they denied me and denied themselves what would have been their best hitman to whack those advanced migs😁

Let me repeat what I have said on the Afrikaans version about this events of April 1989.As a young PLAN recruit who had just finished with guerrilla training the previous year.As the events were unfolding some of my colleagues and I were in our bush clinic somewhere beyond Cunene river behind Xangongo.I arrived there few days ago in March 1989, after I was injured in Cuando cubango areas as we just had a heavy punch ups with UNITA. In the clinic and in the tank I was located I found men had an FM radio and we had been listening from it about what was happening world wide and especially about politics in our country. It was at the time when UN 435 was about to be implemented and we were eager to go home to our families. As usual on the 1th of April 1989 we were still listening to the radio and talking lot of stories. I remember it was Sunday and most of the programs that day were religious related. Suddenly an Oshiwambo radio unnuncers came in and he was broadcasting in Oshiwambo calling the 101 battalion members to go to the assembly points where to be picked up to be taken to their base for redeployment as apparently the country was being invaded. For us we were rather surprised by these news as we were not aware that there were these missions being planned by our leaders. About afternoon Commissar came and called a parade for staffers and we patients included, he had spoken at length about the event unfolding in the country. Fast-forward let me say today I am thankful to my creator I came to me later that maybe I was sent on this mission for a purpose so that I could not be sent in the country. As I am speaking many of my country of my previous unit where I was were sent in the country and crossed the borders and many young men died as a result. Who knows had I remained with my unit probably I too could be died today as for sure or likely that I could have been also send in those missions too.

When all this ws happening myself a young PLAN recruit who had just done with the training the previous year, i was in our bush clinic beyond Xangongo river, i arrived few days in March 1989 after i was injured in Cuando Cubango when we had heavy fighting with UNITA. In our tant in the clinic that Sunday 1th of April we has our FM radio where we used to listen to what was happening politically in our country. We were really eager to live Angola and go back to our families as war was finally over. That day it was a surprise to us to hear one of the Oshiwambo radio ununcers calling the 101 battalion members who were than demolished to come at certin points to be taken to the base as appropriately the country was invaded. At that time some of us never knew that there was such operations being planned by our leaders to send fighters in the country armed. What we knew than was that soon we shall go home as civilians to take part in election. To cut the story short i am thanking my creator as my previous unit before i went to the east Cundo cubango, almost the entire unit went inside the country and many young men of my intake had died as a result. This meant that had i was not sent on another mission and remained in my unit i could probably got included in those missions as well. And who knows i might have been died by now.

Hahaaa. I remember ol Chris Lordan. We did basics together in Klipdrift in Jan 1985 and we also did our Ops Medics course together at SAMS College after basics. He referred to Koevoet. I voltd for the Koevoet thing and spent a year with Koevoet. Zulu 4 in Rundu. I had a busy year with Koevoet and spent tons of time in the veld, longest was 6 weeks non-stop, and I experienced 21 contacts, amongst other I was in the first vehicle ever hit by a RPG-75. It came through the vehicle about half a meter to my right. Smoke and dust and the driver did his job and drove out of the contact. A friend of mine, Louis A, who went through the same training with me, and also went to Koevoet, ended up with 24 contacts with Koevoet. After all that we went back to SAMS College with the intention of klaaring out. There we were yet again chased around by a bunch of Corporals and Sergeants who didn't even do any border duty at all. Everything we had gone through simply was relegated to history. It meant nothing to nobody. As a matter of fact nobody ever asked a single question about our experiences. LOL, I suppose it somehow had some form of meening to somebody somewhere, I'm still looking for that oke. LOL. Those were the days. It was fun.
