    Even tho it often doesn't feel like it, they're still are animals. In this case it's just a tad bit of training as he suddenly moved to enviroment he doesn't have a clue of how to dog. Finally getting love makes em posessive if not trained.

  • @truska3889
    @truska3889 4 ปีที่แล้ว +156

    OK a couple of pointers that need to b said:
    1- I don't like to judge any1 without getting to know them but the only upsetting thing about that footage is the way the petsitter handled the situation. My advice is to get rid of her and find some1 with experience, knowledge and good instincts... She clearly doesn't have any of those.
    2- As a shelter volunteer I see these altercations all the time... The dog that went for a walk returns and when it steps inside it's box gets attacked cuz it's still excited and frantic. The attackers don't want to hurt it, but they do want to calm it down, since dogs don't like that excited energy. Best way to eliminate a problem is to prevent it, so Chester shouldn't b allowed anywhere near the door when your dogs r returning home... At least for now.
    3- The commands "Take it", "Leave it" and "Drop it" r the most important ones to teach a new dog, specially for a powerfull big dog like Chester. Those will give u guys control over his mouth and can prevent/defuse these kind of situations. Forget "Sit" and "Lay" for now and focus on those...
    4- Walking Chester along side your other dogs is the best and fastest way to build up an everlasting bond between them... Do this everyday and these problems will go away, guaranteed!
    Giving a rescue dog a roof, a bed, food, water and access to the sofa/bed in order to cuddle with it at the end of the day is the easy part and any1 can do it. Exercising and training them daily is the hard part cuz it takes time and effort... I'm a true fan of yours Steve-o but I have to say it's very disappointing to see both of you giving up on Chester so quickly. True dog lovers show commitment and good dog owners don't give up! I hope Olive recovers quickly and I really hope u guys don't give up on Chester... It's the worst thing that could happen to Chester and Wendy since their bond is so obvious and sweet... Best of luck and much love!

      completely disagree. ive worked with animals for over 10 years (professionally, not as a volunteer). some dogs just dont do well in some settings and theres just no way to change that sometimes. they are living beings, they have thoughts and feelings. it could be as simple as the big dog didnt like the small dog. the small dog is lucky it didnt get killed, and if another attack like that happened, it very well may have been killed. sure, some things could have been done differently, but you're suggesting that this man risks his pet being killed just to "show commitment" and be "a good dog owner". the right choice was made. it wasn't a good mix for a variety of reasons, granted maybe some were at the fault of the humans, but the situation is what it is. yes, there could be training involved to EVENTUALLY fix the issue, but its very possible by that time it would be too late and some ones family member has been killed, all in the name of so called "morale upstanding". a shelter setting is also extremely different than a home setting. i do agree, the pet sitter definitely lacks experience. however, it has already been long established within the dogs' dynamic (pre chester) that there are no fights and they all get along and she was most likely hired under those circumstances. in that case, she doesnt need to be qualified to break up dog fights. you say giving them a home to live in is the easy part and training and exercising is the hard part. i would say being able to make the difficult decision that a dog does not mix well with your current family is also a hard part and they definitely made the responsible and right decision. your morales seem to be out of wack.

    • @truska3889
      @truska3889 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thepjup4507 Noboby, regardless of their experience, wants to deal with a dog fight. But the possibility of it happening is always there, when 2 or more dogs r close together... Even between 2 balanced, well socialized and well behaved dogs. So if you're making money petsitting and walking dogs and r not capable of dealing with altercations, you shouldn't b allowed to handle other people's dogs at all... As u said, these r family members, the stakes r quite high and it's a lot of responsibility, so she SHOULD b prepared for the worst scenario possible, full stop...
      Dogs r not what they r, they are what they are trained to b! So don't try to convince me that Chester's situation in Steve-O's home is hopeless and unsolvable. Finding Chester a new home is not a difficult decision, it's the easy way out...
      And u should really try to step down from your high horse when making a point. Suggesting that a 10 year professional career gives you more credencials than a shelter volunteer when talking about dogs, just makes u look dumb and ignorant...

    • @thepjup4507
      @thepjup4507 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@truska3889 I think you're still missing the point. Why would he risk his long term family member being killed? If you had kids and adopted a kid and the adopted kid tried to kill your kid, think you can figure out where I'm going here. Since you volunteer at a shelter, you should know that some dogs just don't get along with other dogs and there's no obvious reason. Yes, with constant vigilance and an extreme amount of training it's possible. But, that's assuming some one has dog behavior expertise, training expertise, the 24 hours a day to monitor etc. which is reasonable for a shelter and people who do that for a living, but not for a person who has dogs as a pet and that's it. It's absurd to expect every person to be able to do what you're suggesting and it's even more absurd to chastise some one for not having the means to do that. I'm not disagreeing with you that it's possible to reform any dog. I'm saying that for most people it's unreasonable. I also want to add, although altercations are always possible, it's also always possible to prevent them. But again, it's ludicrous to expect every single person who has dogs as pets to invest hours upon hours upon hours into animal psychology, constantly observing subtle body language cues etc. Your heart's in the right place, sure, but you definitely don't understand the real logistics of what you're suggesting, especially for some one who lives mainly on the road in an entertainment career. He did the right thing for him and his family and the dog. You can speculate all day long what you think you could have done differently. From the other video Steve-o shows Walter being "incredibly aggressive" and Olive being "super yappy" which could just be a vocal dog but looks like shes challenging everyone she meets..
    Their whole life they were around other small/suburbanite dogs who any time they had a confrontation was broken up and carried away.
    This means you always turn it up to 11, you respond with full terror mode because in 2.5 seconds it'll be over.
    Enter a strange new GIANT dog who gets along with the OTHER NEW BIG DOG and you're for sure going to see every square foot of territory being guarded and CONSTANT hierarchy switching.
    So what do you do? Make sure the big dog knows his place, and you go full on teeth bare nipping.
    Meanwhile, Chester is a former street-dog who VERY likely had to fight to stay alive. Ignoring that kind of provocation could mean serious injury. Then he's in an environment of OTHER big/traumatized dogs.
    You can tell they know the sitter is at the door as both are there to greet her, and both are quiet.
    As she enters the space Olive yips at him to "stay away" and "wait his turn" kind of thing, to which he barks a "GFYS" back..
    Olive turns it up to 11, spikes her hair, shows her teeth and does a stutter step to his neck.
    I don't know the full history but they mention "altercations" which I would hazard a guess were the little dogs being territorial and Chester not backing down or even responding to the challenge.
    At that point he decides to defend himself and maybe even "resolve" the situation by doing serious damage to the other dog. (if he wanted to kill her he could have re-engaged very quickly, the sitter wasn't doing shit)
    Lessons in part-2...

    • @Desopolis
      @Desopolis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is all armchair training and with limited information, I'm sure they did the best the could or thought of, and it's clear they have the best intentions...
      but IMO What should have been done:
      1. when re-contextualizing a dog like that it takes MONTHS for them to adjust.
      2. If they were already having issues, they should have been treated much more serious and when alone, be crated or kept apart.
      3. He had a highly qualified pro at the ready, and they should have been working with BOTH Chester and the little dogs to define the rules of the house
      4. Chesters aggressive responses were likely telegraphed in the earlier altercations, he needs to be taught the appropriate level of response and probably even as a cue to retreat the space instead of defend it.
      5. The little dogs cute "yappyness" being a "terrorist" or whatever attribute we give these little dogs needs to be dealt with.
      My Grandmother has a Cocker Spaniel that even nips children and they just laugh it off, until my GSD pulls a Judo move and pins him to the deck until he submits. And she's a fucking service animal.. Can you imaging how annoyed and hassled she had to be to do that?
      6. Transitional spaces need to be reserved for humans and dogs need to be given permission. There would have been no challenge if they were taught to give the people coming in space or even queued up for treats once you put your groceries down or whatever.
      a real expert would probably have a lot more thoughts but thats what I immediately felt.
      TLDR: They were setup for failure and both the house of little dogs feeling threatened and not having a balanced attitude, and Chester being ready to defend his life at any given moment was a huge oversight...

    Little dogs tend to have attitudes and a big dog that's been introduced to a new environment and only made a connection with 1 dog. You've then got situations where it feels like it has to fight for its place against the others for love so when the smaller dog that he's not as familiar with a and hasn't created a bond with has challenged him he will enviably fight back to make the situation worse that sitter was shocking and was smacking the dog only greater angering it. Clearly unqualified dogsitter if that's your reaction to the fight. I feel like you've done Chester dirty when none of that was his fault. I've got 11 dogs 7 rescue and I've had to introduce them all in intervals to the others. Big dogs and small dogs also have a harder time bonding from my experience when brought into a new environment with other dogs. God this was heartbreaking if I didn't live in the UK I'd be able to give that boy such a good life. Such a sad situation.

    Of course the lady at the sanctuary is going to insist that Chester would be happier with you vs. at the sanctuary. I will keep it really really real with you, I think every single dog at that sanctuary would probably prefer to stay there because it's such a sweet setup and everything for all the reasons you mentioned. But the lady who runs the sanctuary obviously is still going to always insist that a potential adopter go ahead and adopt anyway because ... I mean 1,300 dogs. And sadly if they're anything like animal rescue in the states, if they go too long without being adopted they're put to sleep. I hate that so much but it happens every day.

    Don't get rid of him, try some more training and see how that goes.

      Nick Parry yeah! That was only one chance. The poor dog has already been through a ton! Plus wendy got attached to him and vise versa too.
      Just needs training and a human who knows how to handle dogs! That lady was a joke! Smdh
      My one big boxer mix grabbed my little chi pom and shook her like a rag doll. I grabbed the big dog hard by the scruff of her neck and said “NO” very firmly. She let go.
      She was just trying to establish pack leader. My chi pom learned her place and the big dog also knew I meant business. It was scary, but they’ve been around each other for 3 years now and are good to go!

      They moved him to a new house in Oregon with a dog of similar/size and breed. While the choice isn't everyone's cup of tea, he seems super happy in the video Steve-O posted and the other people have a massive property where he can run around and be happy. :)

      No he deserves his own home solo. Too dangerous

    You really should consider keeping him and training the moments of aggression out bit by bit. He's like 90% there, he just needs some patience.
    It can be hard to forgive when an animal hurts a loved one. But there was truly no malice in it, and those two dogs could easily become best buds given the right training.
    Chester lived among thousands of dogs without problem. He's capable of living among five dogs without problem. He just got defensive of his newly-found, much-loved territory.

      Greyghost680 Your being as judgmental (if not more) than Jessie H. At least he had valid points, yours are only assumptions. Bottom line is Steve-O shouldn’t be giving up that dog so quickly, he made a commitment by adopting him & now needs to make the adoption work, period.

      @@jkgkjgkijk This has to take the cake for the most ambitious attempt to put politics where they're not needed that I've seen this week. Not very Republican of you.
      P.S. dogs are just not capable of "betrayal." You're anthropomorphizing a mere animal. This, too, is not very Republican of you.
      P.P.S. what do you have against postmodernism lmao

      @@Jesse__H look up the word analogy.....your interpretation of my comment is literal, so you missed my point. If I said the dog did not act appropriately vs betrayed him..would it matter? Are dogs loyal? Do you see my point? I get what your saying though, I deleted the comment.

    Heart was in the right place, with proper training I think chester would have done great but ultimately he will get another great family and hopefully everyone will be happy.

    So now you want to palm him off to someone else, should have left Chester where he was.

    Steve O. You need a k9 break stick for that exact reason. They work wonders. I have 4 rotts and i can seperate them in about 2 seconds if they get into it. Although they havent for years but when they did that tool saved vet bills and possibly lives of my best friends..
