EFAP, the enemy of the people, the channel of hate! They lie! They lie about one of the most popular and beloved comic book movies ever made - The Snyder Cut! Snyder Derangement Syndrome find a cure!
Imagine being happy that proven liars like the Snyder Derangement Syndrome propagating scum who go by EFAP watched and liked something you did. If Hitler enjoyed your content would you also be happy?
Regarding the Black Widow Mattress Sniper conversation at around 5:39:00, I would like to add that even with their rifle rested on a stable platform no trained sniper would opt to lay down on a springy surface (such as a mattress), since any recoil or bodily adjustments would make target reacquisition in their scope much harder. Suspended or springy platforms are sometimes used in shooting competitions specifically to add an extra layer of difficulty for follow-up shots.
Yes. YES. Fuck. And bigger than that, she's fully exposed. In broad daylight. And every damned assassin is wearing a black fucking bodysuit like a uniform. What the hell? The whole landscape is grey stone and concrete, Ms Sniper grabs the eye. People make fun of James Bond and guys in trench-coats being a trope. But even then, that's a cliché because too many movies did it, not because its impractical and nonsensical in context of the story. Bond wears a suit because he's in England, trench-coats are really common in Europe, people wear them to walk to work, it IS good concealment and for blending in. The simple fix for that stupid Black Widow scene was to put Ms Sniper in a roof-top storage closet, or have a tent-storage full of spare scaffolding or SOME concealment. Just have her inside an apartment on a higher floor instead of open and exposed on a rooftop. Spiderman and Iron Man movies in the MCU are full of drones. Winter Soldier and Civil War are all about how satellites are a thing.
I was in repeated army training recently, you have to do those once in a while, and there was a showcase of sniper rifles and related equipment, the mats they lie on are made from kevlar strips encased in sturdy camo cloth, they fold into this tidy little square that fixes on the backpacks, they are very light and very stable to lie on and take up like an umbrella's worth of space. As far as I'm aware it's EU wide standard equipment. We tried lying down on them in a tall dense grass and it's very stable they hardly bend even under full body weight of soldier with a sizeable backpack. Have on of those you hacks.
@@valentinegonsalves7322 It is so weird to me that so many of these big-budget movies about military/merc/spy shit seemingly do not have any small arms tactics subject matter experts on set (or even in the writers' room) consulting about these basic things. Or more likely, they do have experts available to them, and the trash writers just fail to ask/heed their advice. Nobody will ever criticize your movie for getting the small details right, in fact we often point them out in praise of a film.
@@CrustlessKing they seem to happily ignore historical advisors when making period drama, I can totally imagine they'd have the same lack of respect for experts on contemporary details.
I can completely relate to your gas station story Rags. I had a homeless guy ask me for money for food outside of a fast food restaurant. Like you, I was also in a generous mood and offered to buy him some food with my last $5. He then said that he did not need me to go get the food for him and asked if all I had was $5. I told him, yes all I have is $5 and looks like I’ll be keeping $5.
Distance is relative. Alpha Centauri is really far away compared to your local Walgreens but basically right next to us compared to the Andromeda galaxy
Someone did that gas station grift on me when I was a bright eyed, optimistic 20 year old. I’m ashamed of how much they got out of me, but I’ve always had trouble saying no to people who ask for help from me. The experience hardened my heart, though. And now I’m a heartless late-20s shell-of-men that enjoys EFAP.
I once handed some dude a tenner when he asked me for gas. Motherfucker got into his truck and drove off without even putting a drop of gas. I was absolutely livid. Never again, I vowed that day.
I could not agree more with Rags' point of how, just imagine a person who really needs that kind of help... It especially rubs me the wrong way, because I've been on both sides of that situation and this is Asia.
Had a lady tell sob story to me (the usual "just enough to get home is all I want honest"). The whole time, she kept interrupting her story to mention how 'handsome and kind looking' I was. I shrugged and went over to her car, filled it up with 2 gallons and then cut off the gas and put the nozzle back. The smiles and compliments disappeared as she barked 'what, you aren't gonna just top me off? some help you are.'
It's been a rough three years for me, and I couldn't possibly imagine where I would be without this community. To get real for a minute, I was raised in a cult, (lol, long story.) and you guys have played a massive part in my waking up over the last few years. So I truly wouldn't be where I am today without the critical thinking skills you fellas have helped me strengthen. It's not due exclusively to the shenanigannery of EFAP that I'm free, but it's definitely helped me become a more critical and objective thinker. About movies of course, but also about real life. Showing people how to identify and deal with logical fallacies and cognitive dissonance, even if just in movies, is real actual genuine authentic legitimate Super Hero work. It teaches people how to think objectively for themselves, and there's nothing more valuable than that. So to all the hosts/guests and all the wonderful folks in chat, a big ranch covered Congratulations and Thank You for the past 3 years! Happy Anniversary Massives!

About the “cinema” thing. I haven’t seen ANY classic films in a theater. I didn’t step foot in a theater until about 2003. So I guess I’ve never experienced Scorsese films as REAL cinema. My 25” screen tv just destroyed all the great films I watched growing up I guess. I’m glad these people are here to tell me most of my experiences with film doesn’t count..
6:06:56 I don't think that EFAP gave this foolish argument the thrashing that it deserved. I absolutely HATE this argument that female side characters don't count as representation because they only exist to prop up a male protagonist. Side characters don't exist only to serve the main character. They can have internal conflicts, relationships with each other, opinions about the world, on top of having a MUTUAL relationship with the main character. This power dynamic that he claims exists just doesn't. Side characters can have agency. Like, I recently played Final Fantasy X for the first time. All the party members in that game have so much going on internally and interpersonally. They don't just exist to advance the main character's arc. They do that, but they also exist for their own sake. What's ironic about this argument is that a lot of feminist media has terrible supporting characters who struggle to have any agency at all. For example, Sophie and Luke in Batwoman or Carol's Friend from Captain Marvel. No internal life at all and they spend so much time sucking the main character's dick too.
On the dings; I have really bad asthma, and it leads me to have coughing fits and then having to spit up phlegm. So whenever I record voiceover for the youtube channel I am a part of(not this one) I have to make sure and cut around that in the editing, because I know it is going to be there. I missed a coughing fit once, and the video got uploaded. As soon as the first comment came through going "Hey, this coughing fit goes for twenty seconds and was really loud", we took the video down, re edited it to remove that and then just reuploaded it. It's not rocket science, you want your video to be good, you know it has a problem, just fix it.
Totally on Fringy's side here. We can talk all day about the overall quality of Marvel and franchise movies, the "clap-for-product-and-consume-next-product" mindset, and even the ethics of them. However, whenever we go as far as to say that these films aren't cinema (especially without being clear wtf that even means) you're not helping anything. In fact, I'd even argue that they stand to lose something here. Being able to point out what a great film does to a Marvel sludge film does within the same limitations of filmmaking only bolsters the cinematic experience you advocate for. But putting the films you don't like into a separate box takes away the ability to do that.
It just seems pompous, right? "Not cinema". At the same time I get what Scorsese was trying to say. The way I saw it is market saturation. Its just that he made a dumb ignorant statement instead. I'm seeing something similar with regular novels and comic books. Everyone is trying to pass off cringe as "anime style". And I WOULD say they're not "anime" style. I can go on and on about how bad the books are, but I'd never say they're "not books". And for context, people went through this same crap with Tarantino movies. There was a concentrated section of Hollywood and press snobs who said things like Tarantino is a hyped-up p0rn0grapher who's self-indulgence in gratuitous violence is embarassing to watch. Tarantino kept doing what he did, and even though you can see his influences from Japanese media and styles, he doesn't use that to make excuses for his lower-rated stuff, trying to hide behind "but Japanese media does it".
honestly, lumping all marvel together deprives you of a great way to make a legitimate argument about the line between 'cinema' and 'product'. Early marvel, despite being superhero action movies, are some really great character driven stories, where action was used very well to flesh out characters. Then around the time of Captain Marvel you see where the movies become more and more formulaic and lose the character focus and become just about selling the product instead of telling the good story if you really want to have a meaningful conversation about about movies as art and movies as purely business, Marvel in it's entirety is a great place to start... unless you dismiss them in their entirety because of some arbitrary line that action movies aren't 'cinema'....
The fact that Martin said something stupid is no big deal, everybody does that from time to time, it's just that so many people actually agree with him that is shocking. Good stuff taking that argument to task 👌
I have a pretty personal rebuttal to the whole Scorsese "cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being" thing. In the opening scene of Gurdians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill witnesses the death of his mother, and his reaction is pretty much to run away from the scene as fast as he can. I can relate to that because I had to go through the same thing at a similar age, and even though I can't really fathom what was going through my mind at the time, I had the same exact reaction. As soon as my mother passed, I bolted. I ran as far and as fast as I could just to get away, because that was the only thing I knew to do at the time. Do you not think that James Gunn struck a deep psychological cord with me in that scene? This whole discussion is just a really baffling way to exclude movies you don't like as being part of the cool kids club, and its incredibly insulting to the ARTISTS (Yes, it is art you disingenuous fucks) who poured their heart and soul into the movies they've made. If you don't like them, criticize them for what they are, don't try to disclude them from the conversation. That doesn't help anybody. In fact, it hurts your viewpoint because you basically admit that you have no structural argument against the quality of the films.
(Video essayist voice) yes, it is art...but is it really comparable to... T r u e C i n e m a like taxi driver or godfather? You have the right to like your amusement park ride! (End essayist voice) But in all seriousness I completely agree, and funny enough I have similar emotional resonance with a lot of movies since my stepdad was killed in a semi truck accident a few years ago. One example being attack of the clones with anakins rant in the homestead basement. That desperation to never want anyone to have to feel this horrible feeling, or to lose someone suddenly without the chance to say goodbye? And the fact that, despite all of his abilities and power, he still can’t do anything to prevent the kind of pain and suffering that death itself brings, and how that really bothers him? There’s something valuable in that scene, damn it, even if it’s not a flawless execution.
I mean, Martin Scorsese’s only oscar winning movie is a direct copy from a far superior version from Hong Kong. He has no right to say that certain movies are not cinema when his best work is an “inspiration” from someone else’s creativity.
"Expand your film palette" is insufferable. I've told people they should give movies a try that, at first, they didn't think would be up their alley. But I've never worded it in a way that just oozes "you've only been watching childish tripe, get on my level" like this first statement does. To be this pretentious about what constitutes "cinema", it boggles the mind. I dare this guy to play Steve and Tony's conversation at the woodpile from Age of Ultron, next to There Will Be Blood, and tell me one is just frosting for stupid action, but the other is the real deal.
it's also really easy to turn around on pretentious essayists by simply challenging them to expand their film palette to consider the value of 'fun' in a film, that not every movie needs to be exceptionally deep to still have artistic value.
7:44:40 GTA IV does a better job showing characters acting in line with what they've lived through. Yelena is jumping around complaining about women's clothes after being held captive and brainwashed into being a killer since childhood. Somehow, she's able to crack jokes and is quirky and murders people with glee. Compare that to GTA IV, Niko Bellic is a former Slavic soldier who comes to America for the first time, seeking revenge from fellow military men in his unit. Right off the bat, he's amazed at how rich everyone is and how poor some people are in the same Liberty City. He constantly fights with his cousin about lying to him and they reminisce about how the Old Country was and how America is not the Old Country. He finds everyone's clothes and bling funny, he can't talk to the women properly and he can't handle that some women actually find him attractive and likable. He can't believe he's involved with gangsters' blood-related family members whom they don't much care about. He's awkward and complains about feeling out of place at the beginning, but he styles it out and grows into the role of a gangster while getting used by everyone until he gets what he came for. Fucking awesome.
GTA IV is one of the best written games ever made man. My favorite scene was the one where he talks to Michael Faustin's wife about how much seeing the atrocities in war changed him. Even the evil irredeemable characters like Dmitri have understandable arcs and motivations, I love that game.
Same. I love all the characters in that game. Including all the girls and women. Because even though they are side characters they all are fleshed out. Mallorie, Kate, Michelle. I remember being taken aback by the graphics and tone and the mood of GTA IV compared to San Andreas and all the games that came before it. Wasn't ready for how well they balanced the emotional weight and the comedy. Its much darker than the other games too.
@3:51:39 in Georgia there are pinecones fall either premature or on time. On time- they are brown and light weight. Premature- they are green and can be a couple lbs. and falling from around 70’ tree could possibly cause death at least concussion if it hits someone on the head
1:51:45 could have also used the scene in Winter Soldier where Steve is talking to Peggy in her hospital bed. Because that's just crazy explosions and not extremely contemplative and emotional.
How DARE this dude hold up Michelle Pfeiffer as an example of a BAD Catwoman! She is the best - sexy, feisty, dangerous and vulnerable. Her costume even looks like something you can feasibly create. And she's from the most well made (written, acted, directed, edited, stylistic, atmospheric) non-Nolan Batman film. Danny De Vito's Penguin will forever haunt me. :/ BTW, congrats to Shad for momentarily jumping over the fence. I'm in awe you made it out in one piece, while they practically pen the rest of us in our coops with threats of tasers. -_-0 Thank-you EFAP for keeping me entertained in these trying times.

In response to Theo it is quite common to say "the literature" in reference to any written work. I find the designation between "book" and "literature" kind of silly but I don't think he explained his terms very well.
On "Why Martin Scorsese Is Right About Marvel Movies" When I was in highschool I was in a speech class. One of the assignments was to give a persuasive speech on a topic of our choosing and my topic was basically that remakes and franchises are bad and we should stop watching them because that only encourages "uncreative" films. I wasn't even saying they weren't cinema; I was just saying they're bad for the artistry of the medium. I've come to the conclusion that that's one of the most bone-headed takes I've ever had, yet a teenager's public, bone-headed take still isn't as bone-headed as Scorsese's.
My biggest problem with the MCU is that there are just way too many comedic moments that cuts the tension in a scene and you know phase 4 has been a total disaster in storytelling and character development with some poor mortality choices. But not all Marvel movies are bad, look at the Rami Spider-Man Trilogy and the animated movies Planet Hulk and Hulk VS.
@Legacy Legends Same here. The comedy started getting in the way for me. First in Ragnarok. I love that movie but its like they are ashamed to have the men be emotional, despite all the woke preaching about how men should express themselves. Then Infinity War had some of that same shit, Thor gets emotional talking about his mum when The Guardians find him, and then he makes a joke to move on. And then in Endgame its the same thing, Thor and Hulk are butchered. They're turned into losers. And I understand not everyone can be a hero because its a packed film. But Nebula and Gamorrah have some of the same emotional beats and the film lets them play out more naturally instead of a one-liner gag and cutaway.
It wasn't a bone-headed take at all, at least not from the headline you've given us. The inability to come up with your own story is of course inherently uncreative and the problem only gets worse as time goes on. Eventually, there won't be any original stories anymore, it'll just be the exact same set of stories told over and over again with about a ten year gap between installments. Franchises and remakes are the death of creativity.
“We should stop watching franchise because it encourages uncreative films.” Wait until you find out that Scorsese’s only oscar winning movie is so creative that he copied it from a legendary police movie from Hong Kong.
I always immediately apply a strong dose of skepticism anytime someone claims "X great movie was a copy of a superior Asian film that came before it!" What did the Departed copy?
God damn Meme has such a soothing voice and slight accent, I keep getting flashes of the way he narrated the ending to Snyder verse, I don't know what that style is evocative of but when it's not done for parody it's strangely soothing and melodic, maybe syncopated words make it easier to follow at higher speeds?
6:38:00 The GDELB ding should be in a silent moment, very loud, and there should be an edit "I did not want to re-record this, so I just left it in. Just ignore the occasional ding sounds. It's not a big deal."
The defining characteristic of art is that it's something only the artist could have made. That's what separates a work of art, even a bad one, from a product.
The black widow video gets even funnier when you realise that she watches a Bond movie in her own movie ! I wonder were he thought of a connection to manufacture
This mentality that Marvel films or even superheroes movies can never be "real cinema" is a fallacy. It creates this rule that these superheroes can never be anything but action scenes; it is just a roller coaster ride; after all, this famous Film director told me so. Not once do ask, "maybe we can do a lot more with this genre and it something better" they instead belittled these super movies as nothing but trash because they're not deep enough, and honestly, this attitude has done more harm than good. It discourages others from even trying to make Marvel movies better because they're not "real cinema."
Nobody said them not being cinema makes them trash though, you're strawmanning man. Scorcese and Flight called them a different term with different writing styles and ways of resolving drama, not inferior. I don't agree with that argument either, but don't extrapolate a simplistic statement and fight that instead of dealing with the actual argument.
@@kannanretro thats what they imply by saying its not the same as what they consider cinema, Read the article he did, its pretty obvious that he thinks it's inferior to what he considers real cinema.
Wanted to bring up a point at 1:03:05, Glib brings up how MCU is blending television with cinema. Mulholland Drive was intended to be a television pilot. After being rejected, Lynch came back later to finish it as a full fledged film. This happens to be my favorite film of all time. Not sure who wouldn't consider it cinema, not to mention it won Lynch best director.
I thinkin MCU is it a problem though, it is make every one movie more inflated because no character can character develop too much in one movie and let's be real the we save the world again and again and again start beiing old even if the enemise are variide. I think I have to think more about what my problem with the MCU in the big picture as a cultural artifact but this is the basic problem I think.
@@varisugocsay1152 I think it just depends on the movie, I will admit I haven't really enjoyed an mcu since far from home but there were movies back then that did a lot for character development and it was exciting to see where that went. As for the stakes, I think world ending is appropriate consider the power levels of most of these characters but I get what you mean I don't wanna see it all the time that's why I enjoyed the vulture in homecoming
It also begs the question as to what is wrong with "blending" tv and cinema? There is a difference between a medium being corrupted and having it adapt/evolve.

God I can't stand older directors and people in the industry who bang on about "the cinematic experience". What they're talking about is literally their nostalgic memories of what cinemas were like 50 years ago. These guys haven't watched a movie in a public cinema for decades. They need to accept that the word has moved the fuck on and a lot of people aren't interested in this mythical "cinematic experience" anymore. Especially not if you've got a 4K TV and a sound system. Literally what is the point in going to a cinema if you have that?

Why was 6 afraid of 7? It's a fairly common question, mostly because when people see 6 and 7 next to each other, it doesn't really make sense. 6 is large, muscled, and trained in multiple martial arts, while 7 is fairly average, physically, and short. However, 6's fear of 7 has its roots in childhood. See, 6 and 7 grew up together, and for a few years, they were best friends. But then 6 kissed 3, and they became childhood sweethearts. 7 secretly had feelings for 3, so 7 decided he needed to destroy 6 to win 3's affection. He started subtly, undermining 6 whenever possible with passive aggressive comments and compli-sults. But over time, things got much more insidious. 7 started messing with 6's performance in school, bringing down his grades and turning teachers against him. Even worse, 7 became great friends with 6's parents and slowly turned them against their own offspring. At night, 7 would sneak into 6's bedroom, and whisper depressing and hopeless things into his ears. Every time 3 was around, 7 would pants 6 and make fun of his genitalia, or try to body shame him in other ways. However, 3 was both smart and compassionate, and saw through 7's schemes, sticking with 6, trying to counter 7's psychological tear-down with compliments and friendship. Finally, 7 decided that he would never be able to win 3, so he drugged both 6 and 3, taking them to an abandoned cobbler's hut on the edge of town. There, he proceeded to torture and maim 3, forcing 6 to watch in horror, unable to do anything to save his sweetheart. 7 didn't kill 3, but instead, put her in a semi-vegetative state. 7 cleaned the scene of his prescence, then called the cops, having 6 blamed for 3's condition. 6 was sent to prison, believing 6 was guilty, 6's parents fell into a deep depression, eventually committing suicide over what they believed 6 had done. After serving 17 years of a 30 year sentence, and getting out on good behaviour, 6, now muscled and skilled as a fighter, thought he might get revenge on 7. But when he finally tracked down 7, he found out that 7 had installed a micro-bomb into 3's body, and should he be killed, the bomb would automatically go off and kill 3 as well. And though she was still in a mostly fugue state, 6 couldn't bring himself to hurt her any further, and decided to try and move on with his life. However, being an ex-con, it was difficult for him to get a job. 6 finally found employment at a diner, which 7 then bought, and proceeded to again undermine and toy with 6 at every turn. 6 tried to find employment elsewhere, but 7 contacted any potential employer and soured them against 6. 6 finally realized that no matter what he did, 7 was going to try and ruin his life, and he resigned himself to living as a broken, lonely man, never able to stand up to the depraved, amoral 7.

You think they’d actually think about that while making the movie? Nah, that would require too little effort.
Yes. YES.

I can completely relate to your gas station story Rags. I had a homeless guy ask me for money for food outside of a fast food restaurant. Distance is relative. Alpha Centauri is really far away compared to your local Walgreens but basically right next to us compared to the Andromeda galaxy
Still impossibly far away, but yeah you’re not wrong haha
Someone did that gas station grift on me when I was a bright eyed, optimistic 20 year old.

FFX is a Master Piece.
Art, Animation, Music, Story, Characters, Themes, unparalleled.
On the dings;
I have really bad asthma, and it leads me to have coughing fits and then having to spit up phlegm.
It's _effort_ though.
@@valentinegonsalves7322 textbook pompous, yes
honestly, lumping all marvel together deprives you of a great way to make a legitimate argument about the line between 'cinema' and 'product'.
Early marvel, despite being superhero action movies, are some really great character driven stories, where action was used very well to flesh out characters. Then around the time of Captain Marvel you see where the movies become more and more formulaic and lose the character focus and become just about selling the product instead of telling the good story
if you really want to have a meaningful conversation about about movies as art and movies as purely business, Marvel in it's entirety is a great place to start... unless you dismiss them in their entirety because of some arbitrary line that action movies aren't 'cinema'....
The fact that Martin said something stupid is no big deal, everybody does that from time to time, it's just that so many people actually agree with him that is shocking. Good stuff taking that argument to task 👌
Of course technically every movie is cinema, people just are annoyed that Marvel sludge gets more money, attention and discussion than author movies.

But in all seriousness I completely agree, and funny enough I have similar emotional resonance with a lot of movies since my stepdad was killed in a semi truck accident a few years ago.
@@nont18411 As if Oscar was an objective sign of quality...

GTA IV does a better job showing characters acting in line with what they've lived through.

A
On "Why Martin Scorsese Is Right About Marvel Movies"
When I was in highschool I was in a speech class.
“We should stop watching franchise because it encourages uncreative films.”
Wait until you find out that Scorsese’s only oscar winning movie is so creative that he copied it from a legendary police movie from Hong Kong.
I agree with your former self.
Part 2 is my favourite.. if Pipeman's story would be in here it would be perfect. :)
Martin Scorsese “Marvel movies are not cinema.”
His oscar winning movie is a direct copy from a far superior Hong Kong one.
Which film's that?
@@lahuk1194 The Departed

I always immediately apply a strong dose of skepticism anytime someone claims "X great movie was a copy of a superior Asian film that came before it!" What did the Departed copy?

God damn Meme has such a soothing voice and slight accent, I keep getting flashes of the way he narrated the ending to Snyder verse, I don't know what that style is evocative of but when it's not done for parody it's strangely soothing and melodic, maybe syncopated words make it easier to follow at higher speeds?
Higher speeds? Do you shorten the long man? :V

The defining characteristic of art is that it's something only the artist could have made. That's what separates a work of art, even a bad one, from a product.

Downloaded the original MauLer upload for work, but will watch this'n too
Wanted to bring up a point at 1:03:05, Glib brings up how MCU is blending television with cinema.
Side note: EFAP TV: Twin Peaks!
@@austinwoods466 I would love that, they would probably tear it apart (especially season 2) season 3 is realllllly good rat though
It also begs the question as to what is wrong with "blending" tv and cinema? There is a difference between a medium being corrupted and having it adapt/evolve.

Historic Fact: Looney Tunes was always considered low-brow by most of their contemporaries and even some of their own guys. They literally called the crampy rat-infested studio they worked in the termite terrace.
Those guys knew what they were and they made the most of it. One of them nuts went permanently blind in one eye from a prank that they use to pull on each other. Disney was the frat house, termite terrace was were the party was at. You'll never see Micky with the sheer amount of dirty Bugs and Daffy have done over the years. If it's funny, it's funny and that's all that matters to the tunes.
I was listening to my local news station the other day and they promoted Better Help. I was surprised, but kinda shrugged it off. I was just listening to get a quick overview of the news anyway. This morning, they had a Noom ad. I thought, “No fucking way! I must have heard wrong.” “That’s N-O-O-M-“ I immediately shut the radio off, lol.

The Black Widow video is the result of "just pretend it's what you wanted..."
They used to show cartoons in movie theatres at one point in history, does that make cartoons cinema by Scorsese standard?...
The last time Southpaw ever made an appearance on EFAP 😂
